Talk:The Rules

Notes to other editors:

  • This page is meant to describe existing rules. If you want to make a new rule, go to UDWiki:Administration/Policy Discussion.
  • Try to explain why the rules are what they are. That way:
    1. The rules are easier to remember,
    2. It shows the rules are meant to be reasonable, not arbitrary;
    3. It contributes to a more equal wiki society, where _everyone_ understands the rules, not just some "wiki aristocracy".
    4. People can obey the rules when it is sensible, and disregard them when it is sensible. Hooray for common sense!
  • I've tried to avoid the "v_nd_l_sm" word because it's hyperbole to describe something so easily removed as vandalism, and by having different words for the same thing, it helps us to avoid groupthink.
  • Try to focus on the rights these rules give editors, (eg no one can edit your user page) rather than the the limitations (you can't edit anyone else's). Hopefully that will stop the article becoming overly negative.
  • Like any set of rules, this list is never going to be able to cover every possible situation. Instead, it should try to cover the most common situations.

Hopefully people will read this page, and then not break the rules. Much of this information is available elsewhere, but it makes sense to have a shorter version that people are more likely to find/read --Toejam 13:24, 5 April 2007 (BST)

Rules vs Help:Contents

This is just my option but wouldn't be better work on rewriting Help:Contents instead of just creating another page not to many will see? I agree with you on that a short simple explanation of the expectations of wiki is important but unless it is easily locatable it is useless. Vantar 20:10, 15 April 2007 (BST)
Perhaps this information would be easier located if it was at Category:Policy Documents. In retrospect, that does seem a better place, seeing as how this page would be a summary of those pages. --Toejam 14:30, 16 April 2007 (BST)

Alts without good cause

sounds like it is illegal to have an alt until "Having two accounts is _not_ seen as vandalism in itself" that point. Should be clarified earlier that you can have as many as you want you just can't vote multiple times with them.--xoxo 00:39, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

I was wondering about this as I have an account for an alt, though I never vote with that one. What sort of wording should I put on the page to avoid any problems? Something like: "This user account is never used for voting. The owner has another account that is used exclusively for that purpose but she doesn't want this character to be associated with that one."? Recommendations?--Lois talk 10MFH 00:06, 4 March 2009 (UTC)
