Alternate Format?

The current list is hard to use. An easier to use (but not implement) method might be along the lines of what I have planned for the NT Status Map. Which I can't fully explain (I'm to tired to hack the template-fu right now) but suffice to say it more or less would all allow a map image (like the one below) that shows "info balloons" when you position the mouse over the building in question. This would actually work to allow one single map to display info about every building in the city, but would obviously be a cast iron PITA (but not impossible) to implement on the wiki. --Seb_WiersctdpImagine 19:57, 21 April 2007 (BST)

  • As the current project was originally my brain baby, i suppose i should ring in here. I recognize that the present format is unwieldy, and it has always been my intention to try and figure out something better. However, for the time being i think the page should be left as it is for the sake of easy editing, at least until all the information is in. If you're willing to try, then your idea would be great, but i unfortunately don't currently know how to do that.--Zeek 23:15, 21 April 2007 (BST)
    • Probably not gonna try it; to much effort required, to many other projects. I've actually been slapping my info on the page for the museum itself, not on the museum list page, so I'm bad there too. --Seb_WiersctdpImagine 00:05, 22 April 2007 (BST)

From Talk:The Batwing Brigade

Could you please update this page with information you gather? that would be very handy --Duke Garland 09:57, 21 April 2007 (BST)
I have been. Ever since I posted the above idea, every museum I visit (whatever the alt) I go to the museums page (or create one if none exists) and put in a one-line blurb (under its own heading if need be) describing what the exhibits are. Its amazing how many of the existing pages about museums do not even mention the exhibits! I'd guess I've hit about 25 so far, mostly in the SE. Malton seems to have a LOT of African art- makes me wonder if maybe it is in South Africa? That would explain why the malls have gun shops... --Seb WiersctdpImagine 13:28, 21 April 2007 (BST)
quite an interesting idea! anyway, clicking on separate museum pages to hunt down their resources isn't quite comfortable, so i'd like to ask again to add room descriptions and found items to the page i linked. --Duke Garland 14:29, 21 April 2007 (BST)
That would eventually make for a cumbersomely long listing of museums. The current format looks a mess as is, and adding lines below each entry... yeech. Maybe we can come up with a better way to format this list, perhaps even a non-list method? As for now, I'm putting the info where it may not be instantly available, but will never get lost. I agree that it would be nice to have one central place where you can rapidly determine what nearby museums have what sorts of exhibits, but I don;t think the format offered by that list best accomplishes that goal. --Seb_WiersctdpImagine 14:36, 21 April 2007 (BST)
it's temporal and it's purpose is to find out what types of museums there are and what kind of items they held, so that to modify page Decorative Items with more precise data. i agree that current format is... hm... far from best. i didn't create that page, it was started by QSG guys. btw, this doesn't look like proper place for this discussion. should we delete it or move somewhere? --Duke Garland 17:56, 21 April 2007 (BST)
Done- this is the obvious place for it, after all! --Seb_WiersctdpImagine 19:29, 21 April 2007 (BST)

Quartly Study Group Museum Tour, April/May 2007

I've made the first museum-tour update, for the Pretty Museum in Pimbank. I also slightly tidied the page up (some broken headings). Not sure if this is the best approach or not but I copied/pasted the description of the museum contents and spent 25 AP searching and listed the items I found (omitting repetition). 25 AP is probably not enough to get an exhaustive list of the museum's contents, but it gives a reasonable idea and I don't want to spend too much time on each museum as there are lots to cover.  :-) --Gimbo 11:23, 19 April 2007 (BST)

If not exhaustive, 25AP is certainly exhausting. I'll be crossing over to Shore Hills tomorrow. Buddhagazelle 19:13, 19 April 2007 (BST)Buddhagazelle
True. It might be a bit much. However, I suspect we'll find that there are only a few "museum types", characterised by the description string, and that once we've got good ideas of what's in each of them, spending 25AP on every museum won't be necessary. For example, I've just done Gillman, whose description is "its collection of conceptual paintings", and in 14AP of searching I found: 2 conceptual paintings! So probably there's nothing else interesting to find there, and there's probably nothing else interesting to find in any museum with that description. If I'm right about this, that suggests that the "items findable" shouldn't be listed with each museum (since that'll be highly redundant and error prone) but instead there should be a new section (or maybe a new page, but I reckon in the museums list would suffice) listing the items findable for each musuem type. --Gimbo 20:38, 19 April 2007 (BST)
Good point. Categorizing museums by type makes a great deal of sense to me. Perhaps we should allow a bit of redundant searching in the beginning to ensure that each museum type does indeed contain the same artifacts. Buddhagazelle 22:03, 19 April 2007 (BST)Buddhagazelle
Keep in mind guys, that what we're doing here will effectively double the length of this already vary long article. If you want to catalog findable items, the best place would probubly be the Decorative Items page. Also, you'v both got at least 50 museums to get to, are you really sure you want to be spending 25ap at each one? I myself plan to do abit of souvenir searching, but this sounds alittle insane.--Zeek 10:41, 20 April 2007 (BST)
Well, I don't have anything better to do in UD these days, to be honest. It's nice to have a project.  :-) Plus, like I said, it might well turn out to be a smaller job if it turns out that there are only a few museum types. I just got to the Nuttall Museum, which is clearly all about stuffed animals, so I won't waste any APs searching here. As to the length of the article: is it really necessary to list the museums both by name and by suburb? Don't the individual suburb pages already tell you which museums are in them? I agree with you that this page probably isn't the best place for this info, though, yeah. --Gimbo 10:58, 20 April 2007 (BST)
Should we create wiki pages for each of the museums as well? Buddhagazelle 19:15, 19 April 2007 (BST)Buddhagazelle
A couple of them at least have them already, eg ones where events took place or which were associated with particular groups. It's probably not worth doing for every single one though, IMHO. What does it add? --Gimbo 20:38, 19 April 2007 (BST)
I suspect you're right.

Museum Map.JPG

I'm gonna be updating it to track my progress as i go. Any of you can feel free to do the same. --Zeek 02:30, 21 April 2007 (BST)

so... how does one update this image? Can it be done with standard Microsoft Office tools? Apologies for my cluelessness. Buddhagazelle 17:05, 30 April 2007 (BST)Buddhagazelle
No, you'll need a bitmap editor; I recommend The Gimp, which is available for Windows, free, and excellent. Gimbo 17:47, 4 May 2007 (BST)
by the way, where is the original of this image? i recall people highlighting different building types on it. --Duke GarlandLCD 20:24, 4 May 2007 (BST)

empty museums

As stated here by Kevan himself, some museums even don't hold items at all! i recall there was one museum with adult content somewhere. from current page there is museum with umbrella collection and science exibition. there shouldn't be many of them... --Duke Garland 21:30, 21 April 2007 (BST)

You're thinking of Fluck Library. --Akule School's in session. 16:49, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
Weird use of present continious for an almost a year old comment. anyway, it doesn't look like the page i was thining about when i made that comment above --~~~~ [talk] 21:42, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

The Museum Project

Just noticed that we are/were working towards the same goal. While the majority of the Museum Projectis inactive it still might be of use to you guys, especially if you are considering a design change. It's not up to date but if you guys want to take control of it I'll be happy to fill it in with the information you have as well as what has been collected by the Fine Art of Malton page (assuming it is still accurate, I believe it is but you might want to look it over to make sure). Hope some of this is useful to you guys - Vantar 00:30, 24 April 2007 (BST)

Fine Art of Malton looks ugly and outdated. museum project is however excellent. i can add data from here to there and vice versa. btw, could you tell me for what purpose is UDWiki namespace used and what's the difference with regular articles as i don't quite understand? --Duke GarlandLCD 10:02, 24 April 2007 (BST)
The idea behind the UDWiki namespace is for pages relating to the workings of the wiki, In this case it was recording which museums need to to be checked out as well as providing a place to store the museum data until it is transfered to the various museums locations pages - Vantar 15:09, 24 April 2007 (BST)
Well, if that's a temporal there - we should move it to general namespace eventually, it's awesome and could be great to replace this particular page. there should be general page with this information, looking through all separate museums pages isn't handy. BTW, i'll get to moving data soon (as promised) (edit: well, not this time :( ) --Duke GarlandLCD 20:06, 24 April 2007 (BST)
Agreed, the Museum Project looks excellent. I will be adding my info updates to that place from now on when possible. Its also ridiculously easy for me to transfer data from the new museum pages I created to the tables, and vice versa. --Seb_WiersctdpImagine 12:15, 24 April 2007 (BST)
