(The following is an audio recording made by members of the Intelligence Corps on a fact-finding mission into the British Archives. There are about thirty such tapes, but most of them have been censored by the Home Office. The primary voices are Benjamin Finnegan, Andrew Black, and Lyle Sarkiss- respectively an intern in the British Archives attached to the Corps on their mission and two of the four Corps officers operating it. Another voice has been detected at numerous points on the tape, but it is garbled and illegible. It is unknown who the voice is.)
Lt. Lyle Sarkiss: Christ on Golgoroth, this thing is heavy. I'm starting to agree with the civvy, sir, this place could do with some computer filing.
Cpt. Andrew Black: Just move the damn books and keep your gob closed, Lieutenant. *a sigh* I'm getting sick of this job, *Lt. sets down the books with a thud* of this damn wild-goose chase around this hole in the dirt.
Benjamin Finnegan: Well, I can't just wave my fingers and get the information to magically appear. I'm certain we have something on your phantom unit in the archives somewhere, but there's no official recordings. *rustling of paper* Bloody Civil Security Office has been censoring bits of the archive non-stop since the Incident. Move that light in a bit, eh? "...tribunal... civilian operations in... blah blah BLAH blah blah..."
Cpt. Black: You know, Johnny Boscoe? He and I, we're mates since childhood, and the moment I ask him about this damned Unit SPARROWHAWK he says No Can Do, Andy ol' friend, Not Allowed. Fifteen years in the services, not a secret between us, and he clams up the one time our banter might have proven useful to me. Boscoe's in the Air Service, he won't talk about it. Ron Seaburn works in Whitehall, he won't talk about it. Ollie Marks, Water Services, says he knows something- something BIG- but he can't talk about what it is. I am so SICK of not knowing anything, especially when that's what they're paying me to do! Answer me this, bookboy, if you're allowed to, WHAT is Unit SPARROWHAWK?!
Mr. Finnegan: A-HA! *scrape of chairs* CSO manglers must've missed this volume! "...investigation into possible private funding by Rateger Inc. and NecroTech R&D Division into Unit: SPARROWHAWK, see page 429!" *rapid rustling of paper*
Lt. Sarkiss: Damned fine show, commie, damned fine show! So what's the word? *rustling stops*
Cpt. Black: Doesn't look like much. News notation from the Sun.
Benjamin Finnegan: It's more than it looks- there's scribbling beneath it is what counts. *clears throat* "The Prime Minister's office today confirmed that an American paramilitary unit had been authorized to enact training exercises on abandoned buildings and facilities in East Lincolnshire, though they neglected to divulge the reasons for the authorization. The unit, known as SPARROWHAWK, is an American tactical response unit designed for responding to chemical and biological attacks, and specializes in urban combat and field medical analysis. The Prime Minister's office confirmed that a sizable sum had been paid for the use of the facilities, owned by the British government following their abandonment, but neglected to state the exact terms. The exercise blah blah blah it's just news-speak from there on."
Cpt. Black: I stand corrected. That's more information right there than we've found in four hours' searching.
Mr. Finnegan: It gets better. Notes underneath must have been made by someone else looking for something similar. "Unit SPARROWHAWK American- govt. funded? Maybe not. Supposedly attached to USEUCOM but no notes of any attachment. Connections to all sorts of military groups, all of whom claim SPARROWHAWK not under their chain of authority- reinforces idea SPARROWHAWK not under any normal military authority despite connections to at least twenty national militaries worldwide. Funding from NecroTech suggests SPARROWHAWK possibly private cleanup team; unlikely due to extent of unit's elaboration but possible. Heavily armed; capable of analyzing and treating almost any wound or illness on-site; known to be ruthless. Still v. little information available. More research required."
*short silence*
Cpt. Black: Well, THAT is something. We'll have to tell- [SECTION OF TAPE REMOVED BY HOME OFFICE] -we've discovered here. Lt. Sarkiss, put that book back and meet us back in the center aisle.
Lt. Sarkiss: Yes, sir! *chairs scrape, footsteps diminish off quickly*
Mr. Finnegan: This is getting creepy. Just WHAT is all this about, Mr. Black? You've still told me nothing about what's going on in that damned town, or what might've become of me brother. I mean, he's a doc, so he's hardly an idiot, but I want you to tell me; what's he gotten himself into?
*another, longer silence*
Cpt. Black: Mr. Finnegan, I am sworn under pain of death not to tell anything of what I have been told to anyone but other members of the unit involved in this investigation. As much as I hate myself for it, I can't tell you what is going on in Malton. But as for what your brother's gotten himself into... let me just say I hope you never have to find out firsthand.
