Make DNA Extraction Give The Player's Description
Timestamp: | 03:08, 30 March 2006 (BST) |
Type: | Improvement |
Scope: | Survivors, Science |
Description: | DNA extraction doesn't really give any useful information. It gives name and class and feeds data to the seldom used NecroNet, but that isn't of much use to a scientist in the field. I suggest that upon a successful DNA scan in addition to the current information you receive that character's self-made zombie description if they entered one. This would not link you to their profile, it'd just include the description written there with the other information you receive. Right now profile descriptions mean nothing except for RP purposes, this would actually make them have an in-game purpose as you could use the description to determine whether to attack or revive. And there is no way this could hurt the scanned players as they get to write the description themselves! It makes DNA scanning a bit more useful, provides information about the zombie the scientist can choose to trust or distrust, and would allow zombie players to actually have their profiles read once in a while. Good for the game, good for scientists, and good for zombie roleplayers. |

- Keep Author vote. Doesn't hurt anyone, helps everyone. Science! --Jon Pyre 03:08, 30 March 2006 (BST)
- Keep - Awesome idea. --Dickie Fux 03:23, 30 March 2006 (BST)
- Keep - Kind of ambivalent towards it, but more on the "eh, why not" side--Mookiemookie 04:31, 30 March 2006 (BST)
- Keep - Logical, forthright, useful; What's not to like? (Provided one isn't a professional zom?) --Gene W! - Talk 05:49, 30 March 2006 (BST)
- Keep - So let me get this staight. If I (as a zombie) had "a big stupid zombie" as my description in my profile, the scanner would see "a big stupid zombie." Am I right? I like this idea. Dickus Maximus 06:11, 30 March 2006 (BST)
- Kill - Sorry. I like the role-playing improvement but I don't like how this would interfere with my scientist's extraction runs. When I do a bunch of extractions in a row, I'm trying to hit that Extract button over and over before the zombies wake up and notice me. If in-game messages start popping in (like flares or whatnot), it bounces the Extract button around and makes it harder to click. Throwing in descriptions of lengths ranging from two words to two paragraphs would cause the action buttons to jump around like Steve Ballmer on speed. It's a small objection, but then the benefit seems kind of small too. --John Ember 06:15, 30 March 2006 (BST)
- Re It's just a paragraph of text. It's pretty easy to ignore if you like. --Jon Pyre 09:04, 30 March 2006 (BST)
- Re - Not when it's forcing my action buttons to move up and down with each extraction, that's the point. I would however support an option to turn this on as suggested below. --John Ember 14:35, 30 March 2006 (BST)
- Re If it's that big a concern it shouldn't be hard to make each message take up the same amount of vertical space regardless of the size of the message. Your buttons wouldn't have to move at all even with this, the description area would remain the same size just sometimes there would be more text than others. --Jon Pyre 22:17, 30 March 2006 (BST)
- Keep -But i'd rather have it optional, not everybody will like it.--Vista W! 08:05, 30 March 2006 (BST)
- Kill - For the reasons mentioned by John Ember. --Grim s 08:57, 30 March 2006 (BST)
- Keep - With a second to the optional thing. How exactly does this make DNA extracting useful really? More fun maybe, but not useful. --Pinpoint 08:58, 30 March 2006 (BST)
- Re Not super-useful but useful. And fun is good. --Jon Pyre 09:04, 30 March 2006 (BST)
- Keep Good --EnForcer32 10:49, 30 March 2006 (BST)
- Keep Nice idea- Harmless to zombies, interesting for humans. --Swmono 07:42, 30 March 2006 (EST)
- Keep - It might even stop people wasting 10+ APs reviving my zombie. --Brizth W! 14:46, 30 March 2006 (BST)
- Keep - Half a ton of things make the buttons jump around - someone talking, being attacked, seeing a flare - maybe instead of mindlessly clicking you should look what you're doing? Killing a suggestion because you're not thinking isn't fair. --Charax 15:02, 30 March 2006 (BST)
- Keep - Good Idea. -- Andrew McM W! 16:06, 30 March 2006 (BST)
- Keep - Amazing idea, one of those strokes of genius that seem obvious once someone else mentions it. The only negative thing anyone has said is that it might make "DNA Ninjas" actually have to *gasp* move their mouse(!), I don't see that as much of a negative. --Norcross 17:28, 30 March 2006 (BST)
- Kill - I don't know about this; survivor characters usually have a 'REVIVE ME PLEASE' notice in their zombie profile, whereas a zombie player has descriptions about hanging entrails and whatnot. Unless zombies keep their profile blank, this would negate zombie tactics of blocking revive queues with a brain rotter, and from getting a revive if they want to buy human skills. --WibbleBRAINS 18:09, 30 March 2006 (BST)
- Re You can change your profile description at will. Additionally you don't need to have an obvious description: "This brain rotted zombie stares at you menacingly. Please waste a syringe on him." Something with subtlety could leave things ambiguous: "A zombie in ragged blue overalls lurches in front of you. It's still wearing a toolbelt. He groans mournfully as he staggers in search of a new need for flesh." --Jon Pyre 18:48, 30 March 2006 (BST)
- Kill - A player could insert a link to their profile in the description.--Cah51o 19:44, 30 March 2006 (BST)
- Re They can also Mrh upon entering a safehouse and give their profile to 50 people. It's the players option, doesn't really matter which way they go about it. Brain rotters could still thwart revive points, it wouldn't change anything about them standing in the way. --Jon Pyre 21:02, 30 March 2006 (BST)
- Kill - The other John makes a good point. Velkrin 21:25, 30 March 2006 (BST)
- Re The text field could remain the same size but have slightly more blank space for shorter descriptions. Your buttons would not have to move if that bothers you. --Jon Pyre 22:20, 30 March 2006 (BST)
- Keep - Brilliant! And about fricking time! If you come across a number of zombie cheerleaders, or topless zombie soccermoms, um, chances are they're some of mine.. ahem. MrAushvitz 13:55, 30 March 2006 (BST)
- Keep - So why not do this, again? Harmanz will finally get to know the real me without me eating them first. Hell, we could even set up a speed-dating service this way. Gone are the days where I had to viciously savage an attractive young girl before she could take real stock of me. I can meet new people in ten seconds or less! "Hi, I'm Michelle." "GRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH BRA!NZ" --Undeadinator 22:51, 30 March 2006 (BST)
- Keep - Hell yes. Very useful idea, this. --John Taggart 22:59, 30 March 2006 (BST)
- Keep - Though I suggest that it makes the Zombie's name a link to the description (not profile) thus we get all the info and none of the scroll. It's a win-win DavidMalfisto 17:47, 1st April 2006

DNA Extraction always gives info
Timestamp: | 21:59, 30 March 2006 (BST) |
Type: | Improvement |
Scope: | Scientists |
Description: | This is not a suggestion to change the amount of exp. gained from DNA scanning at all. Not every DNA scan is entirely for experience. What I'm suggesting is that, when one recieves the message "SPECIMEN SCANNED RECENTLY" and therefore earns no experience, they should still be able to recieve the informtaion of that character, in case they need it for a different reason, such as deciding whether or not to revive. Experience would not be effected at all, but I see no reason that previous scannings should effect whether or not you are able to get the Zombie's information. |
