UDWiki:Projects/UHUB Discussion
Discussion is now closed, as the UHUB has been created. Please use it's talk page if you want to comment on it. Thanks
Currently, it looks like a new scheduled deletion proposal (User Page Redirects) will pass. This means that user page redirects in the main space will mean an instakill without any of that red tape. This is inspired by a short comment by AHLG, about how we need a UHUB. Since this page will be a fairly high-traffic page, I think a quick community discussion is in order before creation. So, without further ado, I'm going to write down a few ideas (up for discussion, of course.)
The Basics
The UHUB will be a page that lists links to all the (active?) user pages on the wiki. It's simply so, if someone wants to find me, they can just go UHUB>L>Linkthewindow instead of typing User:Linkthewindow into the search bar. My name probably isn't the best example. Take A Helpful Little Gnome, who has a long name that could easily have a small typo.
Who gets a redirect?
Two ideas here:
- Everyone. Basically, every user gets a redirect. Not a good idea, IMO, as there are plenty of inactive users, or users who only edit their group/suburb pages, and are not active in the wiki at large.
- Every active user. Pretty much every user that has over a certain number of edits (say, 200) and has been around for a while. Those numbers are up for discussion.
Of course, any more ideas, go ahead and add them (on the talk page.)
Categorizing
Here, the order should be simple:
- Sysops and Bureaucrats (in alphabetical order.) Since their pages would be in most need of a redirect, they should go first.
- Every other (elegiable) user, from A-Z. Means that if I wanted to find, say Rosslessness, I would just go UHUB>R>Rosslessness.
Links to user pages should ideally only be in the following format (using myself as an example:)
That should be in code (no templates!) and only a simple link.
Finally, go ahead and comment on the talk page. I posted this in Open Discussions as it's not a policy, and I can't see any other places where it should go. However, if I got it wrong, please say so on the talk page, and I'll request a move. Linkthewindow Talk MCM 06:16, 15 November 2008 (UTC)
