Precedent
Okay, if you're reading this, let me take a minute to help you understand what you're about to read. This is my best interpretation of the legal precedent of this wiki. Some gaps and leaps have been made by the author in the best efforts to represent the interpretation of rulings and existing laws. Some of what you read I made up. NONE of this is officially sanctioned by the moderator staff of the wiki. Currently, the text below is a work in progress, and has not officially been reviewed or approved by the moderation team, or anyone in charge of this wiki. The below data may be innaccurate or misleading. Right now, this is my best guess at the wiki law - look elsewhere if you want to read the real stuff. If you are a moderator, or an experienced user, or just a concerned wiki citizen, and see a way to help imporve this drafted list of precedent, please begin a discussion on the discussion page. As long as everyone understands that this list is not being represented as actual law, I think this would be a good experiment. --Kiki Lottaboobs 21:58, 28 August 2006 (BST)
Impersonation
a user shall be guilty impersonation and bad faith if the user makes an edit that alters, deletes, strikes, re-words or adds to another user's signed comments. Impersonation includes correcting another user's spelling and altering another user's words that the editor finds offensive. Impersonation also includes an editor making changes to their own signed statements after posting.
- Exceptions: A user may strike votes that are improperly formatted or violate existing rules;
a moderator may move or indent an improperly placed or indented comment from a moderation page if the intent is clear;
a user may add an unsigned comment tag to the end of an unsigned comment;
a user may remove comments from their user page at their discretion;
a user may remove blink tags from a discussion or public page;
a user may correct broken links as long as the links are correctly repaired;
a user may correct the indentation on their talk page of comments made by other users;
a user may edit their own statements if that statement has not yet been replied to, although this is considered bad form;
a user may strike their own signed comments.
- Exceptions: A user may strike votes that are improperly formatted or violate existing rules;
Deletion of Content
a user shall be guilty of bad faith editing if the user deletes non-signed content from public pages on the wiki without due cause. Deletion includes content replacement and re-wording.
- Exceptions: a user may remove non signed content from public pages if it is speculation portrayed as fact (although speculation portrayed as speculation is not subject to deletion);
content may be deleted from group pages by members of the group;
content may be deleted from a user's own user page;
a user may delete repeats of suggestions under consideration on the Suggestions page or suggestions already considered (unless there are substantial differences);
a user may delete suggestions on the Suggestions page that are not submitted using the Suggestions Template;
a moderator may delete any non-user page content that has been requested for deletion, been voted on for at least 2 weeks and is determined by a majority of voters to be deleted;
a moderator may delete any content submitted properly under the speedy deletion rules.
- Exceptions: a user may remove non signed content from public pages if it is speculation portrayed as fact (although speculation portrayed as speculation is not subject to deletion);
Improper Un-deletion
a user shall be guilty of bad faith editing if the user re-creates a page that was properly processed and deleted through the Speedy deletion or deletion process without going through the Moderation: Undeletion (M/U) process. The first offense of this kind warrants a polite warning, further violations of this policy are bad faith and considered vandalism.
Normal Page Area Editing
no user may modify any page in such a way that it would modify the appearance or functionality of the user interface of the wiki contained outside of the normal page area. The normal page area is the region in which content (comprised of only plain text) would appear when entered via the "edit" link on the same page.
- Exceptions: any page that can be shown to have a clear need to violate the policy.
In the case of custom page titles, page titles that serve a constructive purpose, so long as the custom titles are clearly in good faith and do not violate other policies (examples would be extremely long titles being shortened, or users choosing to display names different than their user names - disallowing impersonation, or titles significantly unrelated to their user names, unless the unrelated titles are established as being synonymous with said users).
- Exceptions: any page that can be shown to have a clear need to violate the policy.
Suggestions
a user shall be guilty of bad faith if the user creates suggestions entirely for the purpose of satire, insult, or comedy on the Suggestions page. A user shall be guilty of bad faith if the user posts more than 3 suggestions in any 24 hour period. Frequent removal of suggestions in order to post non-revision suggestions the same day is considered abuse of the system and thus, bad faith.
Voting
every user on this wiki is entitled to one vote in every instance where a vote is called for.
- Exceptions: an arbitrator may rule in an arbitration case that a named party may not participate in a specific vote for a specific reason as it pertains to the arbitration case;
a user may strike another user's vote if it is improperly formatted, or violates existing rules.
- Exceptions: an arbitrator may rule in an arbitration case that a named party may not participate in a specific vote for a specific reason as it pertains to the arbitration case;
Group Pages
group pages are the soverign jurisdiction of the group who created them. A user shall be guilty of bad faith editing if the user edits a group page, but is not a member of the group.
- Exceptions: any user may, in good faith correct spelling on a group page they are not affitilated with
any user may, in good faith correct broken links as long as the link is correctly repaired
any user may post on a group's discussion page;
an arbitrator may make a ruling prohibiting certian activities on a group's page;
an arbitrator may make a ruling prohibiting insulting or berating behavior in a group's discussion page from another user or group of users.
- Exceptions: any user may, in good faith correct spelling on a group page they are not affitilated with
User Pages
user pages are pages that are prefixed by "User:". These pages are the express property of the user, and only edits can be made to the discussion sections of any given user page. A user shall be guilty of bad faith if the user makes an edit to another user's page, except for aforementioned discussion pages. Insulting or berating language in a user's discussion page is not vandalism, although it is considered bad form (such language may constitute harassment, which may be arbitrated). Although a user's page remains under their control, this does not entitle them to violate existing rules (such as impersonation) there.
- Exceptions: an arbitrator may make a ruling prohibiting certian activities on a user's page;
a user may, in good faith, correct spelling and dead links in non-signed content on another user's page;
a user may, in good faith, move content from a defunct page to a user's page in it's entirety if the content is better suited on a more appropriate page;
an arbitrator may make a ruling prohibiting insulting or berating behavior in a user's discussion page from another user or group of users.
- Exceptions: an arbitrator may make a ruling prohibiting certian activities on a user's page;
Accessories to vandalism
for most cases, only users who directly participate in vandalism are guilty of bad faith editing.
- Exceptions: users who deliberately aid a known serial vandal are guilty of bad faith editing.
Vandal Reporting
Accusations/Libel
accusations and libel on public pages are bad faith edits. Accusations and/or libel are also subject to arbitration. Voicing suspicions or concerns that a user is violating the rules is not bad faith.
- Exceptions: accusations and/or libel made on a user's own page, or on another user's discussion pages are acceptable unless prohibited by a judgement by an arbitrator.
Alt Abuse
a user shall be guilty of alt abuse and bad faith if the user creates, or has created additional user account(s) on this wiki to circumvent existing rules or moderator rulings. Additional user accounts (also called "alts") are linked by moderators on the Vandal Data page, so that warnings are shared between the two accounts.
- Voting fraud a user shall be guilty of voting fraud if additional user accounts are used to cast additional votes to any vote on the wiki (accounts used for this purpose are called "sockpuppets").
- Ban circumvention a user shall be guilty of ban circumvention if the user creates, or uses existing user account(s) to maintain a presence on this wiki during a ban imposed on an alternate account. Ban circumvention is punishible by an escalation of the pre-existing ban, the linking of the accounts on the Vandal Data page and the permanent banning of the alternate account.
- Adbots a user who uses an account to employ an adbot shall be guilty of extreme bad faith and will have their account blocked permanantly.
Spam
Spam on this wiki has many definitions, but this section deals with advertising or promotion content. A user shall be guilty of bad faith if they create content on public pages for the sole purpose of advertising or promoting an individual, group or service without context that directly relates to existing content on the page.
- Ad Content blatant spam advertising is considered bad faith.
- Link Farming is grounds for immediate and permanent banning
- Recruitment Drives are considered bad faith if they involve leaving messages on many talk pages. More than a dozen identical, or near identical messages would be considered bad faith. Use the recruitment page for recruitment drives instead.
