Description

The Ruxton Museum is a large, red-brick European Art Museum with revolving doors.

History

Originally named the "Junior Museum", the facility was established in 1937 in an old city jail. In 1947, a $12 million bond was issued for the creation of recreation and park capital projects, one of which included a new museum. In 1951, what is now the Ruxton Museum opened at its current location with exhibits, a theater, classrooms, and arts and crafts shops and studios.

The museum charged no admission and offered events, movies, plays, lectures, exhibits, and classes for both children and adults, but was geared mostly toward children and educational field trips, and had a special contract with Sharpe Library. Child and adult classes were available in the wood shop and pottery studio. The museum had special topic days, such as Baroque Day, Classicism Day, and Realism Day, during which interested clubs and sponsors participated. But of course, now it just has days that you survive and days that you don't.
