Basic Info:

  • Malls are an excellent place to find a wide range of items; the only major items that cannot be found here are revivification syringes and fuel cans. As such, Malls are frequently used as safehouses and fortresses by survivors. Zombies often check inside (when they can get in), and organized zombie groups sometimes lay siege to them. They are listed as a Tactical Resource Point.

Marven Mall is a four-block shopping mall in the suburb of South Blythville. Its coordinates are: [28, 76], [28, 77], [29, 76], and [29, 77].

After the Energy Crisis of 1979 felled much of Malton's economy, it would take several years before any new construction was put into effect. The city never recovered particularly well from the slump, and as 1980 dragged onward it sagged deeper and deeper into depression. A change was finally effected in 1981 when several major companies moved segments into the slowly dying city (among them such groups as Harper Chemical, Daewong Textiles, and the Yuriyev Steel Company), providing much-needed jobs and bringing life back into the town.

Even so, it would be almost a full year before major construction efforts were begun again, kicking off in the poorer areas like Roachtown and Yagoton as an attempt at urban renewal. While those particular attempts didn't get very far, they took off like bottle rockets in the city's southern end, and construction proceeded apace, revitalizing the old sectors of the city south and finishing off with a grand coda- Marven Mall. Named after a famed Maltonian rocket scientist and weapons designer, Marven Mall's yellow sandstone facade and incredible design fit perfectly with the image the city wanted to convey of a Malton reborn.

Marven Mall threw out the Joachim Mall template established during the Mall Boom, electing instead to take on an entirely new design that, while perhaps not as efficient for space as Joachim style, certainly drew the crowds. From above, the mall resembled a gigantic stylized sunburst- in order to keep with the color scheme, the rocks placed on the roof to help ward off the elements had been ground from the same sandstone used in making the facade. A glass-covered plaza sat at the center of the roughly circular mall, and outward from it radiated eight long avenues, each with yellow-tinted glass all along their length from the core to the entrances. From inside, the light shining through the windows combined with a continuation of the sun idea and a gold-and-cream color scheme created a wonderful sense of warmth and belonging.

Even so, the new style was not without its critics. The entrance sections protruded considerably from the main body of the mall, giving a visual idea of the building as narrow despite its immense bulk. In addition, critics argued that the style was too idealistic, proving impractical in the long run. But critics or not, the city had built up far too much media momentum to stop now, and Marven Mall was officially opened by the mayor on August 19th, 1983.

Other than the fanfare and gala surrounding its opening, Marven Mall did little to attract further attention up until the Outbreak. During the military's initial closing of the city, an artillery barrage intended for suppression on the borders was misfired and landed in the middle of South Blythville, pulverizing several buildings into barren wastelands of rubble and knocking a massive hole in the roofs of the northeast, east, and southeast "wedges" of Marven Mall. Several people were killed by falling debris, but other than opening the east edge of the mall to the elements for a time the massive structure remained firm. The hole was soon patched with sheetmetal and other materials salvaged from a shelled-out warehouse, but welding tools could not be found, and as a result segments of the patch collapse every now and then (though repairs are always quickly made).

July 21, 2009 Mall is under continual attack, though not exactly under siege. The Undeadites continue their siege on the area, and aren't targetting the mall as much as they are the resource buildings - this may mean they're pulling out the supports before fully attacking the mall. Currently, there are occasional breakins by groups of around ten, but they've been held back so far. --Thorgold 17:33, 21 July 2009 (BST)

History

During January 2006, Marven Mall became the target of a massed and sustained zombie assault. Though most likely inspired by the Mall Tour '06, this specific siege was carried out by the Minions of the Apocalypse, supported by the Dark Order of Armageddon and assorted ferals, resulting in the mall being for all practical purposes cleared of survivors by January 14th. Accusations abounded of use during the attack of zombie spies/death cultists, and while direct evidence to support these allegations is lacking, they are not implausible, given the DOA's stated policy of using "life to destroy life." The MotA have been rumoured to avail themselves of similar tactics.

The mall remained devoid of permanent residents for the rest of January, with survivors only coming in for brief supply runs and getting out again as fast as possible. By the first week of February, however, over a hundred survivors had once again settled in the mall, and their numbers continued to rise in the second week, despite periodic assaults against the north-east corner in particular by some sixty to seventy zombies.

On February 25, 2006, The zombies broke into the North-East corner of the mall and killed all survivors inside.

On February 27, The humans retook the entire mall and killed all the zombies inside.

On March 10, Zombies infiltrated the North-East corner of the mall to find it empty save one survivor.

On March 23, The mall was repopulated after many days of being deserted. With the DOA moving to North Blythville, activity had lessened in the area.

On April 18, The mall was being assaulted by around 50 zombies from the Ridleybank Resistance Front in the SW corner and the suburb of South Blythville was in chaos.

By April 23, The mall defenses have been crushed and the inhabitants fled or eaten. There was still a very heavy zombie presence in the area. The mall was mostly empty except for the odd wandering zombies.

By May 10, The mall was abandoned, though survivors and zombies were both working to retake it.

As of June 1, Marven Mall was firmly back in human hands. All four quadrants were populated, barricaded, powered, and even had transmitters operating.

On July 6 50 zombies were sighted outside the NW quadrant of the mall. Small breakins were frequent. Rumors of the Big Bash were heard throughout the mall.

As of July 7 the mall was empty of all humans and ransacked.

As of July 30, the Channel 4 News Team was officially on its way to the mall. Once in the area, they planned revive what we could and kill what they couldn't. Upon cleaning up the place in the wake of the Big Bash, the Channel 4 News Team planned to sing and dance and drink mead with the gods.

On August 1, There was a rather large breach of the mall. Humans with little to no AP were leaving the mall for safer ground. Those with energy were urged to rebarricade the mall, then kill the zombies, then begin reviving those lost in the initial breach.

As of November 16, the mall is officially back in survivor's hands. The Southwest corner seems to be the weakest, with less survivors to defend it. The surrounding area seems secure.

November 18th, 2006 The mall is firmly in survivor hands with at least 50-200 survivors in each corner. Generators are up and running in the mall, as well as most of the surrounding buildings. The surrounding suburb is relatively secure.

January 10th, 2007 I woke up with doors open in north east corner. other doors barricaded. Mall will fall with out barricades

January 14th, 2007 I checked outside today, as a break from my reviving. There are practically no zombies alive outside. This is a good thing --Brendoshi 18:29, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

January 22nd, 2007 With rumors of the RRF being on thier way, things seem to be heating up. Gotch PD [27,76] has daily breakins and is not a reliable entry point at this time. Many NTs have come under attack as well. South Blythville may soon loose its green status. Overall health of the mall is still good. --Showcase 19:12, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

February 9, 2007 Revive points not working. Any zombies seeking revives are shot instead of revived, no matter how non hostile or how many times they saw "Mrh?".

February 14, 2007 The last report was indeed a bold-faced lie. If Marven Mall is in zed hands, why am I still there along with 157 survivors in one corner alone? -Falkenberg

February 14, 2007 The last post was a lie. The mall is still full of survivors, and two corners are powered. Oh, and the earlier post about revive points not working is also a lie. I have been revived three times in the last two or three days, each time with a very short wait, only a few hours. I think someone is trying to scare away potential defenders of Marven. What's the matter, can't win the siege fair and square? -Benjamin

  • False reports have now been deleted

February 15, 2007 05:22 EST 22+ stinches had breached Marven during the sleep time of most part of the survivors putting the entire Mall at stake; all available personel must asist the survivors holding the position right now; I repeat, reinforcements need it ASAP.

  • This time it's true. The mall has fallen. There are still 100 survivors or so in the north west corner, but there are around 100 zombies in the mall, and three corners are ransacked. Another mall has fallen.-Benjamin

February 16, 2007 00:49 (UTC) Theres are less then 50 Standing Humans, with approx 100 zeds inside of the mall. Also 106 standing outside. Mall will be wiped clean within 6 hours or so. FriedFish.ca

February 17, 2007 The Mall has fallen with nearly 150 and upwards near the mall, and around 40-50 inside, no survivors.Anything in and around it has fallen. On another note, some suicidal nut went into the mall, most zeds followed. -Killjoy2

February 18, 2007 I personally blame the fall of marven mall on all persons who stayed in the northern corner's. I am completly amazed at the un-coordination shown by the survivors in marven mall. No matter how many warning were sent out over the airways and by other means, over half of the mall refused to move from the northern corners. 'Props' to all of you who helped out by staying in the southern corners. It was YOU who helped keep marven standing aslong as it did. All thats left now is wait for the RRF to move out as it is now almost impossible to re-claim the mall in its current state. Brother Elestor 05:33, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

February 19, 2007 Zeds, are around 50 around the mall, and up to 20 inside. Most Zeds are going south advise trying to retake the mall soon, if at all possible. -Killjoy2

February 21, 2007 Marven is almost cleared. The northwest corner is barricaded and not trashed, and while the rest of the mall is open and trashed, theres only 1-3 zeds in each quadrant. It can easily be cleaned out within a day. Efforts should probably now shift towards reviving those killed in the massacre.

February 24, 2007 Marven's Nearly secure with most zeds leaving or getting killed, you should aslo start securing the immediate area.I fixed up the NE corner a little to be more hospitable.I aslo cleared out Club Penfold, accidently got it up to Heavily. -Killjoy2

January 9, 2010 Lit, caded, occupied.

February 3, 2010 Zombies starting to swarm around Marven, about 50ish zombies around, might be a siege starting, a few hundred survivors around. All corners caded, generators and radios up on all corners.

February 5, 2010 Marven Mall being overrun, about 60 zombies in the building. NW corner completely devoid of survivor presence, zombie spies sabotaged generators and radios, (Chompsy78 is one of them, all survivors shoot him on sight) Marven Mall will be lost at this rate. (Update) The NW and SW corners have fallen, about 100 zombies in the mall, dozens more outside en route to the mall. The other two corner's fall seems imminent.

March 13, 2011 Since there are no recent updates, here is one. Marven Mall secure and fully lit. No zombies spotted outside. -Scantrax

March 19, 2011 10+ zombies spotted outside on the NW corner. -Scantrax

March 21, 2011 Mall Under Siege. The zombies did break in. Lots of people got killed including me. I got revived @ revive point. Mall is now in survivors hands again. Still danger of another break in. We could need all possible help. -Scantrax

Barricading

It is recommended all quadrants of the mall be kept as heavily barricaded as possible at all times. St. Holy's Church, the factory building at [30,78] and Gotch Plaza Police Department serve as entry points, and should therefore NOT be barricaded above Very Strongly.

Club Penfold was originally used as an entry point, but it is now used as a safe house and kept at Extremely Heavily Barricaded. Some survivors use it as a free-running entrance into the mall to retrieve supplies.

(Unofficial) Radio Frequency

The Blythville Gang is presently operating a radio frequency on 27.44 MHz, to eleminate Marven Mall radio traffic that is broadcast on 27.99 MHz. For those not wanting to be bombarded by the useless garbage being broadcast on the frequencies transmitters inside Marven Mall feel free to join on on the Blythville Gang's frequency.
