History & Significance
Malton's public records show that there has been a hostelry in continuous use on this site since 1781.
Construction of the present Smith Arms was completed in the summer of 1908. Since then it has continued to provide a welcome haven for the discerning drinker hosting an extensive range of real ales and vintage single malt whiskey in a discreet, relaxed environment.
The history of the Smith Arms is fairly uneventful but for one notable exception, during the Great Malton Mob War of 1930 the Mumblini Crime Family used the upper floors as a base of operations and impromptu field hospital for almost seven months. In recent years it's been rumoured that, amongst others Willum J. Kersley and Georgio Rodges patronised the establishment quite regularly.
Traditional diversions include two pool tables, a dart board and a wooden 3/4 size skittles alley.
When circumstances permit there is a quiz every second Tuesday of the month. 18:56 31 OCT 2006 (GMT)
