Speeches

6 Jan 2010 :: Broadcast on 26.12 MHz

To anyone listening in, this is Maverick of the OBR putting

out a call to all survivors in the district. MOB is coming.

We need every able-bodied survivor to head for the Merson NT

in Grigg Heights to consolidate our forces and organize a

defense. We have maybe a week before they hit Crooketon or

Mornington. We can either stand together as one or fall as

many smaller units. Demonstrate the awesome in your veins!

...punch and pie...

This is Maverick, out.

6 Jan 2010 :: Spoken at Merson

Hello to all of you here in the Merson NT. Everybody ready for a zombie storm? MOB is on their way north from Old Arkham. I am expecting them to hit Crooketon or Mornington within the week.

The OBR is hoping to make Merson a base of operations for all survivors in the district and lead counter-zed operations from here and via our forum at beerhah.com. This will be a full-scale, multi-suburb siege before the month is out. Those of you with weak wills or a history of heart problems are encouraged to see safe shelter at least three suburbs east.

To everyone who remains here I will say this: I am Maverick Farrant, leader of the Order of the Black Rose. I will be on the barricades with you. I will fight the zombie hordes with you. And I will most likely die with you (many times!).

We survivors here in this district are made of stronger stuff than most; awesome flows in your veins as surely as there is salt in the ocean. Tap into it and we shall give the Militant Order of Barhah a fight they have not seen in many weeks!

So fill yourselves to bursting, dear friends! For we shall stand as one and take the fight to them and show MOB who is boss!"

7 Jan 2010 :: To survivors in Ackland Mall

My good citizens of Malton! A great and powerful zombie horde has laid waste to the eastern half of the city, and you content yourselves with running away and picking your way through the rubble.

Hear me! Even now, a small group of survivors is rallying more to the cause of fighting back against this horde! Tap into the awesome that I know flows in your veins and join us in Grigg Heights!

Death is not permanent in our once-fair city of Malton, and we will persist and hassle MOB despite death. We shall show them that we are DONE RUNNING. Join us!"

18 Jan 2010 :: Broadcast on 26.12 MHz

This is Maverick of the Order of the Black Rose

If you can hear this, you are listening in on the signal for

the Rose District: Mornington, Crooketon, Reganbank,

Grigg Heights, and Lerwill Heights. Over the last several

days we have been working to amass as large of a survivor

presence as can be managed for one of the quietest areas of

Malton. When MOB first breaks into the district, we will

take action; we will not simply wait for them to devour us

one building at a time. We will show them that even without

superior numbers, survivors can fight the horde!

All of you are encouraged to join us in the IRC for

camaraderie and to better coordinate your actions with the

rest of those who choose to stay and fight.

Many of us will die--and many times at that--but remember

that death is not the end in our fair city any longer!

We shall die and rise again to continue the fight!

Brothers, sisters, friends, strangers... MOB is coming.

And I salute every one of you who stands and fights them!

26 August 2010 - ?? :: To Mall Survivors Across Malton

Survivors, listen to me! Righteous battle has been joined at the Blackmore Building in Ridleybank! Even as I speak to you, survivors from across the city are rising up with one voice against the zombie horde on their own turf! Gennies will be smashed,

guns will be fired, and many will die only to rise again! Sure, you may stay here where the greater part of the horde leaves you alone and you will live... for a while. And lying in the street, what would you give for that chance to be in the Bonk,

fighting against the horde in all its rotting fury?! To tell them that we will not go quietly into the night! We won't give up Blackmore without a FIGHT! So come with me, my brothers and sisters! Let the zombies forget not how powerful we are--

we are lions! For there is none of you so mean and base that hath not noble lustre in your eyes. I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips, straining upon the start. The siege is afoot: follow your spirit, and upon your arrival cry,

"For Kevan, Malton, and Ron Burgundy!"

Lectures

Exact date unknown (2009?)::Guest lecture at MCM

This lecture has been presented in a more readable form, but was given word for word in-game to the members of MCM at St. George's Hospital in Greentown.

~*Nervously walks up to the podium*~

Okay, so.... a lecture on communication.... Well as some of you may already know there are multiple ways of communicating with other players in UD, and all of them are there for a reason. There is speaking, phones, radio, and metagaming. Graffiti is also a form of communication, but it is not nearly as powerful in its impact toward team play as the others. And that's really the backbone of it all--good communication leads to good teamwork and lots of fun. Many people slam in-game communication (Speak, Phone, and Radio) as a waste of AP. However, these people forget to very important things. #1: Not everyone uses metagame communication. #2: If you're obsessing about how much AP you have, you're probably not having fun and do not realize the power of good communication. So don't be afraid to spend those AP in-game.

The Speak command is the most useful of the three in-game commands. It can hold the largest amount of text and, in most cases, will reach everyone in the building. Obviously in high traffic areas like MCM where you have more than 50 people it won't reach everyone, but that is usually the exception. A good thing to keep in mind when using speak is good spelling. grammer isn't quite as much a concern, but keep in mind that people won't get your message if they can't understand what you're saying. Generally, the only speaking you hear is people asking for FAKs. As mighty oak just demonstrated, a very effective use of Speak is sharing information on nearby buildings and zed populations.

Sometimes, as in buildings with large populations, you really want to make sure that everyone hears your message; or you want to communicate with people outside of the building. The best tool for this is the radio. Radio communication is tricky, for a few reasons. First, you need a transmitter to broadcast--which is difficult to find. Second, everyone NOT in your current location needs a radio tuned in to the frequency you will be broadcasting on. Three, you need power in your building to power the transmitter. And finally, you get limited space per individual broadcast message. Once you have the equipment set up, good radio communication is not much different than plain speaking. If you're broadcasting on a public frequency (one that doesn't require the Radio Operation skill), it is generally considered good form to identify yourself with the first broadcast. One good way of doing this is by using your profile ID#. Then on later messages start off with that # to signify that it's part of the same broadcast. An example would be something like...

Maverick Farrant (1417175) broadcasting from Greentown.

+1417175: Mast building down. Require assist ASAP.

You'll notice that the second message started with +####### to idicate that the same person was talking. This is important because radio broadcasts do not identify the speaker. This generally isn't an issue on a closed channel since spamming is less likely. Which is one of the pitfalls of radio. The other is that anyone carrying a radio tuned to your frequency can listen in--including zeds who find you tasty.

Which brings us to Mobile Phones. This is a secure line of communication between the sender and the receiver, providing that they both have phones and the mast building in the area is repaired and powered. With similarly short messages, you need to be concise, but this is a good way of ensuring that sensitive information (like the move of an HQ) isn't heard by people you don't want knowing it. Remember, all of these are valuable and despite what some may say ALL OF THEM are worth the AP. So don't be afraid to use them, even if you also use metagame communication.

Metagame communication, on the other hand, is a large overarching category for any kind of communication outside of the UD screen you are looking at right now. This includes forums, IRC and other chat rooms, instant messengers like MSN/AIM,Yahoo...as well as voice programs like Skype. The biggest advantage to metagame communication is the speed. Communication is instantly sent and received, allowing for the quick reaction to things like falling cades during a seige or effective use of strike teams. Now yes, metagame communication very effective, but people forget that not everyone uses it or even has access to it for one reason or another. Which is why in-game communication is so vital. EVERYONE has access to it.

In closing, I'd like you to remember that communication is key. Especially for survivors, communicate with each other--even strangers!--about what it going on. You have nothing to lose by communicating, but you have the potential to miss out on a lot if you don't. Well, that's it for our lecture on communication! Keep breathing, and hope to see you all in the Rose District real soon!
