Howes Square School

Description

Howes Girls.

A charming, low rise school with grassy fields and excellent facilities. And zombies with hockey sticks.

History

The Class of 1957 celebrated the 80th anniversary of the school's founding by inviting boys for lemonade. The experiment was not repeated.

Howes Square School for Girls was founded by Constance Pargiter in 1877 - one of the first all-girl schools in Malton. (Philanthropic widow Pargiter was the subject of the extraordinary monument in Pegton which bears her name.) The all-boarding school was renowned for offering a first-class education to the brightest prospects of womanhood from across Pegton, no matter how humble the girl's origins (and origins in Pegton can be very humble indeed). However, in time its philosophy of strict segregation from society at large fell out of favour.

Pargiter Scholarships were the gateway to success for hundreds of girls in many fields of the arts, sciences and domestic economy. Old Howesians not only contributed fully to Malton life, but travelled widely, sometimes as far as the River Kevan or even beyond the city, thirsty for knowledge and usually also quite keen to meet the oft-discussed but never-seen phenomenon known as 'boys'.

Sadly, the school's reputation nosedived in the 2000s, when the liberal new headmistress Madame de Parnasse allowed standards of moral rectitude to slide alarmingly, even allowing non-staff members in possession of a Y chromosome to enter the grounds. It is considered no coincidence that the zombie apocalypse occurred shortly afterwards.

The last graduates.
