Malton ended up being a very interesting place - maybe it had been an interesting place before the outbreak, but now it's something else entirely. In particular, the new ecology that has settled into place is a topic worthy of digression and examination.

The incorporation of zombies into the normal human-dead body ecological system created a new cycle, the "Zombicycle," instead of the traditional "live-die" one-way transition from one state of being to the other. This new, unique, and quarantined system has proven to be fascinating - not to mention it proves that humans, faced with the zombie virus on a small scale, can and do survive, while the two "species" are mutually dependent. The zombies break up groups of humans large enough to contest the quarantine, and, of course, feed upon them for sustenance. Humans, in turn, train themselves to survive by combating zombies directly or indirectly (aiding other humans, for example), and also eat zombies. McZeds provides a supply of food for survivors, and thus this self-contained, self-perpetuating city lives (or doesn't) on without any external input or output besides rare military supply drops.

Several survivor accounts also describe zombies as "those ammo-crapping machines," though there has been no direct evidence. Strangely enough, there does indeed appear to be more ammo (among other supplies) in Malton than had originally been there, and there has not been nearly enough dropped in to account for the extra ammo. Perhaps zombies also create more supplies in secret, for some inexplicable reason. Whatever that may be, there certainly aren't going to be any shortages in Malton anytime soon.
