(The following is an audio recording made by members of the Intelligence Corps on a fact-finding mission into the British Archives. There are about thirty such tapes, but most of them have been censored by the Home Office. The primary voices are Benjamin Finnegan, Andrew Black, and Paul Terham- respectively an intern in the British Archives attached to the Corps on their mission and two of the four Corps officers operating it. Another voice has been detected at numerous points on the tape, but it is garbled and illegible. It is unknown who the voice is.)
Benjamin Finnegan: Yeah, yeah, hold your horses! It's not like I've got a computer to find these things on with a simple tap of a button. God forbid the Treasury send us the funding for some new light-bulbs, much less a computer archiver.
Cpt. Andrew Black: It might go faster if you kept your gob shut for five seconds.
Benjamin Finnegan: Yeah, but I'm paid to do exactly not that. Ah, here we go. *short puff of air, likely blowing dust* "Events of the Islands Vee Four, Volume Twenty-Seven: Government Proceedings." Pull that light close. *pages rustling* Let's see... Malmesbury, Malpas, Maltby- here we go! Malton. Erm, D'you want the one in North Yorkshire, or-
Lt. Paul Terham: No, the other one. Southwest England.
Benjamin Finnegan: Oh, I see. Right. Malton... *pages rustling* Aha. "Proceedings for the City of Malton, Year Of Our Lord Two Thousand and Four."
Ahem. "Whereas Malton is still governed as a collective of smaller communities, she is to be governed not under one direct authority, but rather under a collective Council of affairs. This Council is to be governed over by a Mayor, who shall keep the peace among the respective councilors and maintain order. Council is to meet blah blah blah..." *pages rustling*
Lt. Paul Terham: Typical. Aren't you supposed to read all of that?
Benjamin Finnegan: That's the prefacing drivel. What we WANT is the notarized proceedings. Now then... *pages rustling* January, March, May, July- (short, garbled exclamation from the unknown "Voice Six") Oh. Okay, July...
Cpt. Andrew Black: Fourth. One day after the elections.
Benjamin Finnegan: (short silence) By the sound of things, you already know what you want to hear, Mr. Black. What are you doing down here snooping around about Malton? (more from Voice Six) Well, that's all well and good for you, isn't it? But what about the public? I've got a brother in that town, Mr. [CENSORED], and let me tell you, when the third-largest city in England vanishes from the map with him in it I tend to take notice!
Cpt. Andrew Black: Easy, easy! We're trying to find out what's going on over there with this right here- could you just show us the entry?
Benjamin Finnegan: Of course I will, Sir, that's what they pay me for. But I will request you not to assume that the public- and me especially- is going to just sit back and let half a million souls get written off! Just so we're clear, huh?
Lt. Paul Terham: Crystal.
Benjamin Finnegan: Good. Now, then... Ah. "Councilmen James Athright and Ferris Cenwick have been elected in to take the place of outgoing incumbent Leo Carmody, notorious among the council as a troublemaker and rabble-rouser. Councilmen blah blah blah... Carmody was removed thanks in part to the efforts of corruption-investigation teams funded by NecroTech, which began their campaign on the councilor's now well-known checkered past with the company after he began viciously attacking them in late 2002. Carmody is responsible for numerous investigations into the corporation, most notably an attempt to close down the Angerstein Building completely. The corporation has declined to file a lawsuit for slander, stating that they believed Carmody was "no longer a problem"." End reading.
Lt. Paul Terham: Well. I think that definitely confirms DISC's suspicions.
Cpt. Andrew Black: Without a doubt.
Benjamin Finnegan: I'm not even going to ask. So, what do you chaps want to see next?
Cpt. Andrew Black: The military records. We need some serious specifics on a certain ghost unit, codename Sparrowhawk.
Benjamin Finnegan: Hm. I wonder why.
