Suggestion description
There are books almost everywhere in Malton. A library has an almost 100% chance of finding a book. Currently, any player who didn't start as a science class character gets 1 EXP for successfully studying a book. A player who did start as either a Doctor or Necrotechie gets 2 EXP for successfully studying a book. The skill I'm proposing, Studying, would give 2 extra EXP to each successful studying of a book. This skill would be under the Civilian skill tree so it would cost only 100 EXP. So, every time a science class character studies, they earn 4 EXP and an other class character earns 3 EXP.
Basically, with a 10% chance of successfully studying, a scientist could earn about 20 EXP with the cost of 50 AP. Any other class character would earn 15 EXP with all 50 AP. Using these figures, a scientist could buy a science skill in about 4 days. Any other class could get a skill in about 5 days. Considering how one levels up about every 3-5 days, studying would be an alternative form of leveling up. However, to get a military skill with a science class character would take 8 days by studying. So, it would be a weaker but safer way to level-up considering how you wouldn't need to risk being barricaded out of a building after reviving a few zombies.
Studying would also help lower-level characters to level up because of its ease to use. One of my characters, who started off near a library, found a couple of books inside. I still have them today because I never want to throw them out or study. However, with this skill, a level 2 (because they bought Studying) character could run into a library and find some books. Then, after running into the well-protected armory of a fort, they could study in peace until they are able to buy a skill to help them get more EXP than just Studying.
Now, I already know that healing someone with a FAK would give 4 EXP regardless of starting class. I also know that someone would rather be healed than be read to. But honestly, you don't see many wounded people in the forts today. Just by healing in the fort, I average about 16 EXP a full day. What about healing people outside of the fort? Yes, you could do that. But then again, you run the risk of being 'caded out of a building and forced to spend the time before you next play outside where zombies could get you.
With Studying, one could get to level 23 in roughly *whips out calculator* in 140 days as a civilian who bought Studying right away. 140 days is a long time just clicking the book button over and over again. What Studying does is it helps lower-level players to get the skills necessary to kill zombies or to revive them. One can't say they've really played UD until they've killed a zed. So, nobodies going to go about studying all day with the skill Studying. They're going to study until they get a good skill and then go out and actually play the game. Plus, who doesn't like a good book?

Keep Votes
- Keep - Harmless, good level-up for newbs. --Howard Bentley 16:30, 23 September 2007 (BST)

- Keep - No, I will not go help you Pavluk, I will sit here with my book. Good day. doc crook 17:14, 23 September 2007 (BST)
- Weak Keep - It would be tactically unwise to buy this skill - if you put that 100XP into something more useful (say, necrotech employment or hand-to-hand combat), that'd be an investment that would better serve you (and everyone else) in both the short and long run. That said, it's kind of cute flavour, and somehow it's funny to imagine bookworks reading while their friends are literally dying outside. It's kind of lame to desire the rules to force people to be productive. --Pgunn 20:47, 23 September 2007 (BST)
- Change-ish As above. But, it'll herd more people out of the damn forts and into the libraries, which is sorta a plus. Glenstone 21:57, 23 September 2007 (BST)
- Review/Fix As above and below. But then again, what about those of us in suburbs that are fort-less? A survivor doesn't have much time to sit down and read a good book when he or she is busy fixing the barricades, healing those inside that are infected, and shooting the occasional zombie that heads inside. And God help the survivor who gets met by a particularly opportunistic pker...--Private Mark 22:16, 23 September 2007 (BST)
- Keep Hands up if you've ever actually used books to gain XP. No? Then why are you so vehemently opposed to this? Nalikill TALK E! W! M! USAI 22:19, 23 September 2007 (BST)
- Keep It would make sense that if you knew how to study then books would be more beneficial. --Thragnor 23:08, 23 September 2007 (BST)
- Pathetically Small Keep - If only because now I could log and make a point of NOT helping n00bs. --Officer 123satsitx 00:46, 24 September 2007 (BST)
- Keep Its ok.. but the people below have some good arguments how many people are gonna spend 100 Xp to buy this skill. As for me I think its Ok if there was a Student Class studying would be perfect... This Suggestion is Ok needs more work and development --Johnny Reb 15:12, 24 September 2007 (BST)
Kill Votes
- Weak Kill Studying is meant to be a poor method of gaining xp because of the low (i.e. zero)risk and the fact that it does sod all to help other survivors. EDIT: It also seems totally useless- you need to spend 500AP reading to recover the 100XP used to buy it.Studoku 17:47, 23 September 2007 (BST)
- Kill - These types of a passive specific skills just don't work nowadays. Go outside of the fort and move around a little. It's a zombie apocolypse, theres supposed to be danger when trying to do something beneficial. Go romp around outside, if you die, you can get revived. It's not game over. -- AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 17:51, 23 September 2007 (BST)
- Kill - As Studoku and Target Zombie. --Hhal 18:36, 23 September 2007 (BST)
- Weak Kill - I like it because it might help newbies to see the fact that combat isn't the best or only way of gaining XP. I don't like it because it encourages newbies to do something even less usefull than combat. --Steakfish 22:54, 23 September 2007 (BST)
- Kill While I appreciate the work that has gone into this, I do have to agree with A helpful little gnome.--Seventythree 23:09, 23 September 2007 (BST)
Yes, this thing is going to Peer Reject, this is a protest vote. To those below: Death is meaningless, and so is holding territory. The goal of surivors in UD is to to stay alive. Alturism will just get you killed. I do think this skill is however a bit overpowered, now that I think about it, in that there is no risk and that you don't play the game. But the only way to win UD is to not play.--ShadowScope 00:30, 24 September 2007 (BST)
- Kill XP FARM FTW!!! LAWL!!! Seriously, 4 days? Way too easy. Maybe +1XP gain instead of +2.--Secruss 02:43, 24 September 2007 (BST)
- Kill - As Hhal. It is hard to imagine people reading books in libraries in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. People are supposed to work hard to save their ass, not read books. -- John RubinT! ZG 07:34, 24 September 2007 (BST)
- Kill - Only if they're reading up on "zombie killing techniques" -- boxy • talk • 12:22 24 September 2007 (BST)
- Kill - Grab guns, kill zombies. Grab FAKs, heal survivors. Grab DNA extractor w/syringe, revive people. Actively participate in the game --Ryiis 17:27, 24 September 2007 (BST)
- I understand, but listen why not. -- I love it, ecept that it's for survirors ONLY! You need add a zombie equivilent. Newbie Zeds need it WAY more. BoboTalkClown 20:09, 24 September 2007 (BST)
Spam/Dupe Votes
- Spam - for so many reasons. The main one being it encourages selfish play and general trenchcoatery. Having a hard time levelling-up in a Fort? Leave the Fort, go and help fellow survivors on the front lines. Scientists can level extremely quickly given the right location. Healing, DNA extracting and even reviving all give very healthy amounts of XP. --Pavluk A! E! 16:54, 23 September 2007 (BST)
