About this edit. SIGN your posts. This is extremely important. Also, "your page" is whatever page the article is, you edit the article to categorise it, not the category itself. –Xoid STFU! 06:57, 31 May 2006 (BST)

A newbie willing to learn! I like that, much better than some I've spoken to who just have to fuck things up royally (much, much worse than that edit.) and then get all pissy when you try to help 'em. The way I learnt how to do all this can't really be applied to regular users, I'm a programmer with plenty of experience so I rapidly adapted to the wiki way of doing things. (It's easier, truth be told.) But I'll try and help you as best I can.
I digress however. To create an article Help:Contents has the basics right near the beginning. Of course you could use my method; copy this URL — "http://wiki.urbandead.com/index.php/" — put it in the address bar, and type whatever you want after the final /. Press enter and it'll load up the page.
To use the basic formatting, just right click this link right here and use the "open in new window" option. You can keep the basics there for quick reference, or until you think you've got a handle on it. Alternatively, you may wish to go to wikipedia's help section and read their documentation. (Ours is not complete yet, but we're workin' on it.)
Any specifics you need help with, just ask. Or you could try bugging anyone from this list. –Xoid STFU! 07:43, 31 May 2006 (BST)

You actually can't touch the template, as it's protected, only users with sysop privleges can do that. (It used to get munged every couple of days or so from what I read on it's talk page. Ugh.) What you are doing is referencing a template. (Reusable code, 'cause deep down, everyone is lazy.)
The groupbox template (in it's present form) was "created" by me, (heavily, heavily modified, to tell the truth), so I should know how to work it. Heh. Yes, the "pipes" are necessary. They let the wiki know when a variable ends. Without it, you'll get nothing but chaos in the first cell of the table, and absolutely nothing else.
To update your Urban Dead character's profile, you'll need to edit your Urban Dead profile and change it's group affiliation so that it matches the name of your group. It must be an exact match, or it won't link here. (If it already does, then you don't have to do anything.)
To place a version of your character profile, (see my user page, just click on my name, and ignore all the swearing. Bottom right hand corner, scroll down.) a version like that exists in the template namespace that you can use. (My version is actually a customised one, I didn't like the way the regular one is set out.)
Category:Templates has most of the templates you'd want to use regularly. It's sub categories, particularly the User Templates one, have almost everything you'd ever want to clutter up your user page with. (I think that covers it all… but I have this feeling I missed a point.) –Xoid STFU! 08:26, 31 May 2006 (BST)

Any help needed?

I see you've been corresponding with Xoid about wiki editing. I just thought I'd let you know that

  1. I responded to your question here (you seem new enough that maybe you don't know about the watchlist).
  2. If you need any help, feel free to ask me, as well.

Good luck! --Bob Hammero TW!U! 05:24, 1 June 2006 (BST)
