Well, I do all this manually. I like to add an individual note onto everyones talk page too, rather than just put that massive template there. It makes the generic action seem more personal. And I do mean it of course :) DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION (TALK | CONTRIBS) 02:08, 25 April 2009 (BST)

Alt Proximity Warning vote

Given that your concerns are very specific, I hope you don't mind if I come here to discuss your vote on my suggestion, rather than discussing it on the talk page for the suggestion. If you do, feel free to ignore me, remove these edits, or move them to that talk page. More or less though, as I understand your comment, you feel that because careful players will not be seeing the warning, there's no point in adding it. Is that correct?

If so, then I guess I have three responses:

  1. While I do agree that careful players will not see the warning, not all honest players are careful players, and the suggestion is intended to help honest players, not all of whom are as mindful as you and I might be in keeping our characters apart from each other. Even I, back when I first started the game and didn't know which suburbs were near one another, had two of my characters getting too close to each other. It probably took me a week before I realized it, since I hadn't really started using the wiki yet to map my locations out.
  2. I suspect that zergers won't see it at all. If I were a zerger, I'd want to do everything possible to distance my characters from each other technologically, such as deleting cookies and using proxies to switch IP addresses. After going to all of that effort, giving them the same e-mail address seems like an unnecessary risk, since it would have the potential to link them together.
  3. What's the harm? Even if you think that careful players shouldn't let their characters get that close (and I agree), this suggestion can do nothing but help, as far as I can tell. If there's potential for harm from it, I'm currently unaware of it, and would love to be informed of it.

In all of these though, I really want to hear back from you. I'm not interested in putting forward a suggestion that I would consider to be buggy, so if there are things I'm overlooking, I'd like to learn about them before the voting process is over. RE: Well now that I look at my vote, I suppose I should have labelled it as a "Weak Kill" to soften it. As for your post, I am happy to give you my opinions point-by-point:

  1. This is basically my main and only objection to the system you proposed. While I can agree that this would help newbies to learn about spacing their alts; I think that anybody who, as you labelled, is not 'careful' really doesnt care about the rules then either. Or if they are intentionally keeping their players close to each other but still far enough away as to not be considered zerging (neighbouring suburbs); Then I would have to see it as de-facto cheating. I suppose my views are on the extreme side, but I do tend to see zerging as black and white with no possibility of 'accidents'.
  2. I have only one small issue with your suggestion here; And it is not so much with your suggestion, but with the ability to enforce the rules in general. - I just think intentional zergers should be the ones targeted by anti-zerging methods. A freak accident by an otherwise honest player, while still cheating by the letter of the law, could be overlooked.
  3. I am in complete agreement with you here. This policy couldn't really harm anyone.

Again, hopefully you didn't feel that I object to your suggestions. In fact I agree with the overall gist of your idea. I just feel that the real enemy (intentional zergers) should be the ones targeted first. Thanks for taking the time to reply, and I think I get where you're coming from now. I didn't take it as a condemnation of the suggestion or anything of that sort. Like I said, I really wanted to see if I had overlooked anything significant, or else if you had a different viewpoint than what I had gathered. Again, thanks.
