GPS pinging and Beckoning Groan

Timestamp: Jon Pyre 06:53, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
Type: Improvement/Skill
Scope: GPS units/Zombies
Description: These are two counterpart suggestions for human and zombie to allow them to find contacts in game without necessarily being in the same forum or sharing AIM addresses. Meta-gaming is fine and dandy but sometimes you just want to work with that guy you met in a safehouses a while back who isn't on your forum or someone you don't necessarily want to share your AIM name with.

GPS Pinging

Here's another idea on how to tie in the new color contact improvement to the GPS unit. Next to the GPS unit have a drop down menu listing all the contact colors (grey, purple, red, etc). Select which color you want and click the GPS unit and all your mutual contacts of the chosen color that have GPS units will receive the following message:

"Your GPS unit beeps and indicates Player Name is at (33, 58) (timestamp)."

There is no potential for griefing since only people in color category you select will receive your location. If someone pings too frequently and generates spam you could prevent yourself from receiving their messages by A) Ignoring them in your contact list, or B) Removing them from your contact list. There could also be an additional option on your contact list to block entire colors from pinging you. That would you could tint your group leaders/allies the permitted color and only receive pings from them, not all the rabble on your contact list.

Beckoning Groan

This zombie skill allows you to call out to your mutual zombie contacts from a distance. It'd be similar to the GPS unit pinging, groaning to mutual contacts of a specific color from across the city (assume zombies can hear some frequencies that carry well humans aren't receptive to) However a precise location would allow hordes to form too easily so your allies would only receive your current suburb. Once in the same suburb they could rely on feeding groans to eventually bring them together. It'd have the same protections against spam and griefing as the GPS method.

Random Bullet Points

  • Technical Feasibility: I don't know how easy this would be to program and run compared to features using similar mechanics like radios, highlighted/ignored contacts, and feeding groans. Maybe it'd be easy, maybe it'd be impossible. Unless you're a programmer and can state with professional accuracy this wouldn't work I implore you not to vote kill/spam for server load reasons.
  • Doesn't allow griefing. You select who gets your location. Nobody does unless you want them to.
  • Doesn't allow spam. You can stop anyone from sending you their location.
  • Helps foster alliances on both sides.

Keep Votes

  1. Author vote I think this would make things a lot better. Group leaders could ping/groan to their people and call them over, or you could just ask some allies/friends to come to you. I feel a little greedy asking for even further benefits from the contact list just after an upgrade. Don't think we don't appreciate what you've already done Kevan! --Jon Pyre 06:53, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
  2. this gets "the Joe Pesci seal of approval" how could I be against a suggetion to intergrate meta-game actions into the game? " As only mutual contacts that you choose will receive the message meaining that the sender can ignore and/or decide to go out of the way to pk griefers"--Zbmainiac 07:12, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

Kill Votes

  1. The zombie one is a bit weird... being able to hear a zombie from 100 blocks away based on the colour of their groan? Also, I don't think survivors should be able to co-ordinate that easily. They can already achieve the same thing in-game using radios (and mobile phones I think? Not sure how those work), with a little sense, ingenuity, and planning -- all things that should be encouraged imho. --ExplodingFerret 09:58, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
    • Re Sending a text message out to all 150 on your contact list is a bit impractical, taking days of constant messaging to do and radios are public and you can't verify the broadcaster's identity. Better a private broadcast of your position like this. --Jon Pyre 10:07, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
      • No-one should needto send 150 messages that easily. No-one should be allowed to send 150 messages that easily. --ExplodingFerret 16:28, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
    • Re Radio/Groans allow you to reach thousands. --Jon Pyre 20:47, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
  2. ? - Does it cost Ap to send out a "ping"? --Officer Johnieo 17:10, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
    • ReYes it does. --Jon Pyre 18:17, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
  3. Kill - Interesting indeed, but I would like to see a version of this that doesn't rely on the new color mechanic. --Wikidead 22:18, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
  4. I don't like the zombie half.--Pesatyel 00:00, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
  5. Like it has been said, survivors can contact people already via mobile phone. If you are talking to one person from a safe house that you met, then that is all you should need. This would just give survivors more of an edge to coordinate attacks. And ferals won't be traveling across the map when they can just follow closer groans, espcially when other zeds can't tell them they should travel across the map. -StealthPenguin KOS | PK | RR | HATP | CFT 00:39, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
  6. Kill - If you post these separately I will vote for the GPS pinging but the beckoning groan just doesn't sit well with me. --Wfjeff 06:54, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
  7. Revise - the zombie one is weird, I have an idea and mechanics in mind to make it work though,At least in my eyes.--Wbleak24 06:07, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

Spam/Dupe Votes

  1. Spam - Overpowering for zombies, and the GPS bit has griefing potential. Pretty much what Funt said (why do you always say these things first? Dang you!)--Mr yawn Scotland flag.JPG 14:12, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
    • Re It only leads zombies to the general suburb, less effective than going on a forum and saying "let's all attack this building at 8pm!". But it's about not having to be on a forum. And the GPS unit cannot grief since you must actively choose to use it, and choose who receives the signal. --Jon Pyre 16:06, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
    • Re ...And once their in the suburb they mearly use scent death and feeding groans. So they can easily find each other, even if after just a short while.--Mr yawn Scotland flag.JPG 20:27, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
  2. How many times does this suggestion have to be here? My reason is overpowered zombies. As of now....I think zombies have the upper-hand. --Axe Hack 18:20, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
  3. overpowered --Funt Solo Scotland flag.JPG 09:08, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
