Description

The Whicher Building, home of the Pegton Post

A commanding, towered building in the heart of Pegton's Old Town: home of the Pegton Post newspaper, an organ of note for two hundred years until the outbreak forced its closure.

History

The editorial staff, right to left: Ernest McGilligan - foreign and political editor; Fosbert O'Donohue - sports editor; manly woman - weather and flower arranging editor.

Malton can boast several influential newspapers, but none has such a storied history as the Pegton Post - "the upstanding organ of all true Pegtonians", as its banner declares. From its inception, the Post has combined hard news with soft features, cold facts with overheated opinion, and serious, high-minded ideals with a predilection for celebrity gossip and outlandish tales.

Founded in 1798, the Post's first story was a major scoop - not only did the newspaper's first front page break the news of Nelson's victory at the Nile, but exposed the truth behind Emma Hamilton's alleged boob job. The splash headlines assured that the Post caught public attention from Volume 1, Edition 1: Nelson Catches Boney Napping and Emma's No Booby, Says Close Friend 'H.N.' (black-and-white engravings, see page 94).

An early 'hipster' on his velocipede, delivering the Pegton Post

As well as breaking new ground in content and the use of pictures, the Post also utilised the latest technological developments in order to ensure a prompt, swift delivery of its editions to a news-hungry Pegtonian public.

This willingness to keep abreast of modernity left other newspapers for dust, and the Pegton Post became a popular and vital part of the Malton journalism scene well beyond the borders of Pegton itself. The Pegton Post was also published on both sides of the Pegton Wall, and was considered an unbiased source of news and gossip throughout the 'Wall Years', 1961-91.
