Specifying Location Images

Okay, so I recently went through all of the location images and filed the vast majority of the images into location specific categories. So for example, all images relating to Police Departments are now found in Category:PD Images, Park images are in Category:Park Images, and so on. Also, on the main category page you'll notice a new navigation template with links to all of the new categories. There are still a small handful of images that don't neatly fit into specific location types, and this is fine, since they best place for them is in the general category.

My next plan of action is to go through all of the newly formed subcategories and remove the Category:Location Images tag from all of the images. While it sounds like a big task, and it is, it'll probably only take a couple of hours. But before I do that, I'd like to check with the community to see if there's any good reason why I shouldn't.

But first let me explain my rationale for doing so. By disassociating all of the newly categorized images from their parent category, we will be left with a much smaller group of images in one lump. So, when you go to Category:Location Images you'll find a more trimmed down selection, probably only a hundred or so images instead of the current listing of over 2,000. This will offer 2 main advantages.

1) It will be easier for people to browse through the location images, since there will be less of them in one lump, and they will be organized into more specific categories.
2) It will be easier for compulsive users (like myself) to sort through the raw location images and file location specific images away into their specific categories (PD Images in the PD category, Park Images in the Park cateory, etc.).

So, I can't see any downside, since all of the images will still be available, and they will be easier to find and sort through. However it's possible I've overlooked something, since I'm fairly new to categories, and that's why I'd like your input. I'm just wondering if there's any potential downside to recategorizing the images in this manner. Thanks for reading this gigantor post and thank you for your help!--GANG Giles Sednik CAPD 01:05, 3 December 2009 (UTC)

I guess if you're willing to go through all this, then go ahead. Seems useless to me, considering all the location images would have to have been used anyway and therefore aren't really that 'available' as a catalogue for people wanting a location image for a block, but whatever goes. --DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION-- 02:07, 3 December 2009 (UTC)
It'll be tough work, but if you want to do it, all the more power to you. I might even lend a hand here or there if I have the time. Personally, I think this could serve as a viable catalog for location images. As long as they don't have a particular location's name visible in the picture, there's no reason why they can't be recycled through multiple locations. I doubt anyone would notice or care.--~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 02:15, 3 December 2009 (UTC)
I'd be for this. More work, but all for the greater good :P --Haliman - Talk 02:37, 3 December 2009 (UTC)
Sounds Fair, and in all honesty shouldn't take too long. I may even steal the template for my Location Page Building Toolkit. --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 09:32, 3 December 2009 (UTC)
THAT'S THE PAGE I'VE BEEN TRYING TO FIND GILES FOR THE PAST MONTH. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKING HELL ;_; --DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION-- 10:13, 3 December 2009 (UTC)
Tee hee. Ross and I both mentioned that on my talk page earlier, silly. Ross's toolkit is mega boss. Anyways I'm glad we found your missing glasses! el oh ol. --GANG Giles Sednik CAPD 12:23, 3 December 2009 (UTC)

So we're adding more detailed categorisation to images? I've no problem with that, a cheat sheet showing which ones are active would be useful considering I hit them more from the main uncat list. The only problem I see with this is being aware of usage when categorising existing images, just because an image shows a location, does not make it a location image, it may be a specialist (and possibly original copyright) image of a group that they don't want smearing all over the wiki. -- To know the face of God is to know madness....Praise knowledge! Seems like a perfectly grand idea. If I can find the time over the weekend (God damn Christmas shifts in retail) I'll pitch in with it. Should we all dive in whenever, or do it in waves so whoever goes second/third/whatever can catch any that were missed? We're coming to get you, Barbara 12:12, 3 December 2009 (UTC)

Awershome. Well if anybody wants to pitch in on the category separation they can go ahead. The easiest method would be to work on a specific category, say Category:Auto Repair Images. Keep the page open and just right-click open each image in a new tab, remove the Category:Location Images category, and then close the tab. If we agree to work alphabetically it will be a simple enough task to check and see if someone else has already edited a given category. I'll probably have a chance to start tomorrow, and based on the input here from the users who are most involved with image categorisation, it seems like a good idea and we can go ahead with it.--GANG Giles Sednik CAPD 12:28, 3 December 2009 (UTC)

Location Category Removal List

Strike out and sign when you have completed a section:

Abbreviations

Given I hate out of place abbreviations, unless there's any cogent rebuttal within 24 hours I'm going to remove Category:PD Images and replace it with either Category:Police Station Images or Category:Police Department Images based on my whim. -- To know the face of God is to know madness....Praise knowledge! I would also like to see that changed (to the latter you suggested, preferably) -- User:The Rooster RoosterDragon User talk:The Rooster 18:30, 3 December 2009 (UTC)
Police Department would be better, to match the in-game names, even if it is a silly new-worlder term. We're coming to get you, Barbara 18:44, 3 December 2009 (UTC)
