Description

The station's good side.

A brutalist modern station, Perks Avenue took its name from the notoriously seedy red-light district in the surrounding area - despite (or because of) the proximity of the police station at Tilly Row.

History

This station supplanted the antiquated but evocative Whitlock Way rail station in the 1970s, when Malton Rail upgraded the east-west service through Pegton. It was intended to be the start of a new era for this somewhat neglected part of the suburb, and Malton's newspapers acclaimed the vision of Pegton's Mayor, Angus McFergus, in trying to improve Pegton's infrastructure and its crime rates in one bold move.

The erection of this forbidding station did nothing to dispel the sleazy atmosphere pervading the area, however. McFergus died a year later, apparently executed gangland style (fingers were pointed at drug lord Barry 'The Trousers' McRaker), and the council began cutting corners in the station's formidable maintenance costs. As the concrete became stained and broken windows were left unreplaced, the station itself soon became a magnet for drug dealers, pimps, and politicians on a surreptitious night out, and nervous commuters opted to drive into central Malton instead. "Going to Perks" became ubiquitous Malton street slang for scoring drugs (or worse), and the erstwhile Pegton's Pride became an embarrassing symbol of its ongoing social problems.

Perks Avenue and its station continues to be an area attractive to those with serious difficulties socializing normally, viz. zombies.

This empty railroad station was once a part of the city's now extinct Malton Rail system.
