Description
The McMurtrie Building is an old apartment building located in the suburb of Rolt Heights. Built in 1903, the McMurtrie Building was originally constructed as a Custom House where goods from the old Kelloway Drive Railway Station would be delivered so they could be recorded and taxed. The building continued to operate in this capacity until 1919, when it was shut down and moved to a bigger venue. Within no time a new owner took residence over the building. The Rolt Heights District Board of Learning and Lore used the building as a low-income boarding school. In the autumn of 1924, when over a quarter of the children attending the school mysteriously disappeared one night in a case that was never officially solved, the remaining children were quickly and quietly moved out of the building to join their schoolmates at Horder Avenue School. For the next four to five years afterwards the building remained vacant and boarded-up to deter vagrants.
Even so, in 1928 police managed to finally apprehend the Rolt Heights Mangler within this very building. The man was later identified as Harold Munst, a homicidal psychopath, who had insisted he was the servant of an unspeakable dark god and his victims, young ladies from the old St. Peter's Nunnery, were sacrifices made to appease its endless hunger. During the trial the prosecution easily proved that Munst was indeed the notorious killer and he would have been convicted for all 13 grisly murders, but for his fervent insistence on serving a "dark god" which soon had him declared mentally unfit for trial. Munst would later be remanded to permanent psychiatric custody of the Silverius General Hospital sanatorium, where he was to be kept incarcerated for the good of society. It was reported that Munst screamed from his cell every day for over a decade about how the dark god he worshipped would exact a terrible revenge on Malton. It was only after this period that Munst was found dead one morning having suffered a heart attack the night before, or that is what doctors recorded as the cause of death. Still, rumours spoke of the look of sheer terror frozen on the dead man's face, his hands vainly attempting to cover his face as he lay curled-up into a ball in a corner of his padded cell.
In 1929 the Associated Charities of Malton took ownership of the building and provided accommodations, meals and support for the under privileged as they traveled through town. Workers stopping by for the night would come in through a tunnel that led to the other side of the railroad tracks where the old Customs warehouse stood. One night in 1932, as 15 men entered the tunnel to leave the building, the tunnel collapsed suddenly leaving the men buried with no means of survival. As the men were without homes or families and authorities had minimal budgets at the time it was decided to leave the men buried there, and it is there that they remain to this day.
Then in 1940 the building was sold to a private owner who converted it into the very same apartment building that it is today. The renovations to the building over the decades led to some startling discoveries, or at least those were the rumours, as no news stories were ever published. Even so, stories would tell of a dead woman's corpse uncovered when a wall was being torn down in the basement or the gnawed bones of children that fell through a hole in the ceiling. Stories like these lingered for decades after most people had forgotten the building's dark history.
Barricade Policy
This building should be Extremely Heavily barricaded at all times. This is in accordance with the mutually supported Rolt Heights Barricade Plan set forth in agreement with local survivor groups. This building is meant to serve as a safehouse for Malton's veteran survivors.
It should be noted that as no specific survivor group monitors nor maintains the barricades associated with this barricade plan, so therefore it is not considered to be enforced. As such, survivors should always expect to find the barricades set at varying levels depending on the survivors inside the building. For the most part though, survivors should always expect to find this building over-barricaded rather than under-barricaded simply due to survivor nature.
