I fight block by block

For as long as the Imperium has stood the fierce Wolves of Russ have held its enemies at bay with bolter, chainsword, tooth, and claw. Known for their feral culture, hunger for glory, and disregard for death or pain, the Space Wolves have carved a bloody swath in Imperial history in fighting back the vile forces of Chaos and the xenos races.

Known for their independent streak and their stubborness, the Space Wolves put the protection of the Emperor's Subjects before all other things seeing it as their first duty. Acting in this capacity for the Imperial forces in Malton, the Space Wolves act as one of the Imperium's main rapid reaction forces as well as the spearhead to any major assault or operation mounted by the Imperium.

History

The Great Crusade

Primarch Leman Russ, grew up on the distant planet of Fenris, a snow-covered world inhabited by primitive, warlike tribes of humans. He was raised by a pack of the massive Fenrisian Wolves that prowl the snowy lands.

He was discovered by a man named Thengir, King of the Russ, who had organized a party of hunters to clear the wolf pack from his lands. As most of the wolves were slaughtered the young man was captured and brought to Thengir who took him into his care, under the name of Leman Russ.

The Primarch learned the ways of man quickly, and many legends sprung up about him. Upon his adopted father's death, the leadership of the Russ passed to Leman. Leman became a mighty leader, winning many victories, often fighting alongside packs of Fenrisian Wolves, led by two of his Wolf-brothers who escaped Thengir's hunters.

The Emperor travelled to Fenris having heard word of the exploits of Leman Russ realizing that they could only be the work of a Primarch. At first Leman Russ refused to pay Him homage, going as far as challenging Him. The two faced off in three challenges, the first an eating contest, the second a drinking contest, and the final a challenge of combat. Russ bested the Emperor in the first two easily, but it was the Emperor who beat Russ in the final contest and, seeing the Emperor's superior might, declared his loyalty to the God-Emperor. He fought well during the Great Crusade, gaining the reputation as a cunning and fierce, as well as slightly unstable, warrior and leader.

Horus Heresy

Just prior to the Horus Heresy, the Space Wolves came into conflict with their brother Space Marines once again. The Primarch of the Thousand Sons Space Marines, Magnus the Red, had ignored the Emperor's command to not dabble in sorcery. The Space Wolves were then ordered by the Emperor to bring Magnus before the him to answer for this. Russ, however, was convinced by Horus to launch an attack on the Thousand Sons rather than attempt to negotiate. The surprise assault upon the Sons' home world of Prospero was furious, and rather successful; however, many of the Sons, including Magnus himself, escaped into the wild region of space known as the Eye of Terror. A blood feud still exists between the survivors of the Thousand Sons, who are now dedicated to the Chaos God Tzeentch, and the Space Wolves.

During the Horus Heresy, the Space Wolves were far from Earth, alongside the Dark Angels, and were unable to assist their loyalist brethren in the fighting at the capital world, Terra. Knowledge of the imminent arrival of the two Legions, which would tip the balance in favour of the loyalists, pushed Horus into allowing the Emperor to personally attack him in a gamble to swiftly end the war. The two Legions arrived just after the battle concluded, with Horus dead and the Emperor mortally wounded.

Post Heresy to Present Day

At first Russ resisted, along with Rogal Dorn, the breaking of the Legions but in the end, like Dorn, submitted out of a desire to see the Imperium that he had fought so long and hard for persevere.

Leman Russ was devastated by his inability to save the Emperor. After the war was fully completed, and all resistance was crushed, Russ held a great feast, at which he declared he would be leaving, and would return for the 'final battle'. He then vanished, and has never been seen since.

Organization

While officially the Space Wolves are no longer a legion their organization does not differ much from their days during the Great Crusade and there is much speculation the Chapter may in fact be close to the size of a full legion. That said, they are very unorthodox in their organization, openly flouting the Codex Astartes.

The Chapter

Great Company

This is the whole of the Space Wolves forces in Malton. A Great Company can be any size and many often vary on that matter.

Packs

All Space Wolves are organized into packs which they are assigned to after they finish training and remain in for the rest of their lives. These units are approximately the size of squads save that unlike a standard squad packs are never replenished if they loose members in battle. Often packs will be grouped together into task forces but such task forces are not part of the standard order of battle and often very ad hoc in nature.

Ranks

Wolf Lord

The commander of the Great Company and by extension all Space Wolves in Malton. The Wolf Lord is often accompanied by a pack of Wolf Guard troops to ensure both his safety and that when he takes to the field directly the greatest damage can be felt by the enemies of the Imperium.

Wolf Guard Commander

The next rank down, Wolf Guard Commanders are mighty warriors who show considerable leadership skills. When a task force of multiple packs is assembled it is always a Wolf Guard Commander who is in charge of this task force even though such forces are very ad hoc and temporary in nature.

Pack Leader

The commander of a pack, these men are as much great warriors as they are like alpha wolves. They are ferocious in battle and lead through stellar example.

Wolf

The common form of address for the regular soldier, they are distinguished as follows by their experience and valor.

Wolf Guard

The most elite of the Space Wolves, this is a rank both attained through skill and experience as well as appointed by no less than the Wolf Lord. This is the only means to become one of the elite Wolf Guard, it is not uncommon for pack leaders to be Wolf Guard themselves.

Long Fangs

The oldest, wisest, and most experienced Space Wolves, they are called as such for their long canines and their long gray hair and beards as well as their numerous and proudly worn battle scars. Often Long Fangs know the value of holding back when others would charge forward, knowing the virtue of patience in war but just as willing to fall into the fray as any other Space Wolf.

Wolf Priests

Wolf Priests take the roles of the Chaplain and Apothecary within the Space Wolf chapter, being responsible for both the spiritual and physical well-being of their fellows. Instead of using codex medical equipment, Wolf Priests using healing potions and balms, using knowledge passed down from one Wolf Priest to the next.

Grey Hunters

The rank and file of the chapter, Grey Hunters are those who have been tested in the fires of war and proven capable and able to serve in the Emperor's Name. While still ferocious and glory hungry, this ferocity is tempered with experience and cunning.

Blood Claws

Ferocious and young glory hungry wolves, the Blood Claws are those who have just finished training and are eager to prove themselves on the battlefield. Filled with hot fury and ferocity the Blood Claws seek to get at grips with their enemy and bring them down regardless of the danger.

Cubs

Young Wolves still in training, these Space Wolves remain under the tutelage of their elders until they are ready for battle.

Uniform

All Marines are officially encouraged to wear at all times the following uniform:

Grey or white coat or overcoat, grey long-sleeved shirt, grey jacket, grey trousers, and black boots, leather where possible.

Due to the extended length of the conflict in Hive Malton, it is understandable that it is difficult to requisition certain supplies. Thus, troops are left great freedom in their clothing choices.

Leather is always a good choice.
