Grevane: An Origin

It all began with that first scream.

It is very rare that one hears a human being scream. Not just yell, but well and truly scream, letting loose all that primal fear and terror. Very rare indeed. Grevane relished the moment, when that first scream rose in the middle of the night, the night he finally let loose. He doesn't remember who made that scream, not anymore, but he does remember what happened that night. He remembers it better than anything from 'before'. He had been at the fire station then, just about to head home after a long and boring standby call. The scream had come from outside the engine garage. Long, loud, and feral, that scream tore through the night, and just as quickly was cut short. The sound replaced with a wet ripping noise, and then a kind of rough cracking, like when Grevane would slip the neighbor's dog a ham bone. He didn't remember how he had gotten there, or when he had picked up the fire axe, but his next conscious moment he was standing before a small group of people. They were eating… something, off of the sidewalk. No, not 'something' but rather 'someone'. As soon as Grevane's already twisted mind admitted that fact, all the other details came flooding in. First and foremost, that 'people' that were actively practicing cannibalism were not really people themselves. They had wounds that should have killed them, or at least be bleeding profusely, and yet they were unhindered by these injuries. These 'people' were already dead. As the female one rose up with a detached hand in her jaw, Grevane noted how she was missing her nose, and wearing a bride's dress. He wondered momentarily where this gruesome brunette's groom was, right before he buried his axe up to the shaft in her face. Tearing the weapon free and watching the former-bride fall unmoving to the ground, Grevane's warped mind finally reached its limit, and snapped. Letting the madness take him fully, Grevane laughed as he dismembered the remainder of the feasting zombies. For that is what they were, zombies, the beginning of the Malton outbreak that would lead to an entire city quarantined for a long time to come. However, none of that concerned Grevane in the slightest, he was having far too much fun.

For the next few months Grevane found a wonderful release for all the murderous tendencies he had been repressing for so long. The zombies made a wonderful excuse to put his favorite axe to good use. Nights Grevane would rest in warehouses, office buildings, anywhere he could set up a halfway decent barricade to get his 40 winks. Days Grevane spent throwing himself into battle with reckless abandon, swinging his axe at anything that stumbled into his path. Every neck severed, every skull split, every head cracked open to reveal its grey filling, they all filled Grevane with delight. Soon Grevane began to branch out in his toys. Joining the fire axe was a collection of shotguns and pistols. Grevane found the quick efficiency of the pistol and the visceral strength of the shotgun equally appealing. Sometimes he would just sit and admire the bloody patterns that the guns would paint on the walls after dispatching a particularly fresh corpse. Of course, such wonderful times could not last forever. Grevane began to notice an increase in the numbers of the undead, that was at first an exciting development. Surely, what could be better than having more zombies to play with? However, the numbers continued to grow, and Grevane began to have a harder and harder time finding safe places to rest at night. Sometimes he would be awoken in the middle of the night to zombies tearing down his barricades, their moans a hungry reminder of what would happen if he were ever caught. Grevane needed to find a better way to protect himself. He couldn't continue to kill zombies if he was one of them.

Eventually, Grevane began to hear whispers of a group of survivors that were working together to resist the undead plague. Perhaps, he considered, they would find his particular talents to be of use. Or at the very least they might not try to throw him in a cell and leave him to rot. Of course, if they did decide to try and deal with him, Grevane would just give them a proper introduction to his axe and be on his way again. He was quite interested to see how things would play out with this 'Fortress'.

Within the week Grevane found the Fortress' moving Bootcamp, and enlisted as a new recruit. There were a few odd looks, and a couple awkward conversations, but in general Grevane was accepted as a fellow Fortress soldier. Of course, there was always a bit of unease between him and the other survivors, especially following any combat with the undead. This however, was to be expected, and so Grevane never thought much of it.

Now a member of Combat Team Anaconda, Grevane spends his days once again slaughtering the undead hordes. Only time will tell how things will go between Grevane and the Fortress, but either way it is assured that Grevane will have a lot of fun.
