Idril grew up in New England, the only child of a charismatic minister who left when she was young, to be raised by her over-protective mother. Idril was driven by brightness, ambition, and a logical and skeptical mind designed in defiance against her spiritual family. She left home early, graduating quickly as a certified medical doctor with a specialty in genetic disease and virology. After the death of her mother, she turned less to active medicine and more to lab research and experimentation.
The rumors spread through the scientific community about a mysterious quarantine, in a city called Malton, containing an equally unknown epidemic. Details were scarce, but the name NecroTech came through as a company seeking lab assistants. The news found Marie Driscoll, a doctor just out of residency, on a leave of absence to complete independent research in a specialized field of medicine on cancer and genetic disease.

It was this work as a medical doctor and researcher that began to develop in her a strange fascination with scientific explanations behind the supernatural and paranormal. Then it should come as no surprise that whisperings in the scientific community about a situation in Malton, England drew her interest. All her inquiries were rewarded not with information but with surprisingly easy employment at NecroTech, and everything fell into place. So on the cold New Year's Eve of 2006 she entered the quarantine, taking nothing with her, leaving nothing behind, and fully aware of what she was getting herself into.
It was cancer Marie lost her mother to, shortly before graduation from med school. But her mother would likely not have been proud even had she lived to see it, holding onto the strict, deeply rooted religious conservatism that had always dictated the small family's philosophy. She herself had long since deviated from that, ever since her father - a charismatic minister balancing on fanaticism - abandoned them when Marie was still young, leaving her to support and care for her mother and herself.

Almost. She wasn't prepared for two things, one being that she wouldn't be let out again. The other was the people. She was ready for the zombies. They were her scientific subjects, a phenomenon to be studied. What frightened her were the survivors. Unstable, emotional, unpredictable. It was exposed somehow for everyone - herself no exception - in Malton's moments of truth.

Thirty-some years since that childhood, Marie Driscoll applied for and accepted what was presented as a few-month-long research project with NecroTech. She was transported privately to Malton on a snowy New Year's Eve, 2006, and left to her own - a few months, she quickly realized, to be indefinite. The city started out as her subject, as she fulfilled her job studying the behavior and genetics of the living dead. The loneliness and distance, then, guided her to renounce NecroTech and return to the career she had left - a doctor, helping survivors, and a reviver - treating the undead as patients rather than subjects. She joined the [[Malton Forensics Unit]] under a handle she's used ever since: [http://www.urbandead.com/profile.cgi?id=747207 Idril], taken from a book she read as a child.

The first few days were spent carrying out the research outlined in the vague job description from NecroTech. Days turned to weeks as she realized her employers cared nothing for her activities, whereabouts, or wellbeing, so long as they were all inside the confines of the city. With no connections, she turned her attention towards becoming a reviver, viewing zombies now as patients instead of subjects. After two months of wandering she joined the Malton Forensics Unit, needing nothing resembling brightness or ambition to get in - like NecroTech, they were all to willing to hire.
That same day, she adopted a symbol now sewn onto her messenger bag - that of a phoenix intertwined with a strand of DNA. With it are the words: NOVA VITA AB CINERIBUS - NEW LIFE FROM THE ASHES. She wears also a medallion of St. Anthony, patron saint of graveyards, as a gift from a friend.

Over a year later she's still fighting her own battles in Malton's revive points, drawing strength to keep going from a personal lesson: "The grave's a fine and private place. But none, I think, do there embrace."  She wears on her neck a medallion of St. Anthony, patron saint of graveyards. On her shoulder, the symbol of a phoenix intertwined with a strand of DNA, with the words:

There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, then are dreampt of in your philosophy.

- Hamlet, Act 1 Scene 5

The rumors spread through the scientific community about a mysterious quarantine, in a city called Malton, containing an equally unknown epidemic. Details were scarce, but the name NecroTech came through as a company seeking lab assistants. The news found Marie Driscoll, a doctor just out of residency, on a leave of absence to complete independent research in a specialized field of medicine on cancer and genetic disease.

She joined the Malton Forensics Unit under a handle she's used ever since: Idril, taken from a book she read as a child.

Idril now calls the suburb of Richmond Hills home again, working again with the NW-5 and assisting in the care of the Giffard Arms and the Splain Arms public houses, alongside their tender and her lover, Stefin Grifflik.
