Description

Caffin Library is a new public library located in the suburb of Dulston on the border with Pescodside. Nicknamed "Coffin Library" for the many survivors who have met a grisly death while sleeping under its roof, in truth the history of the library holds a darker secret from a time even before the "Malton Incident". Back in 1992 a series of horrific murders occurred in Rolt Heights, Pescodside, and Dulston. The murder victims, all homeless people, were found half-eaten in alleyways throughout the three suburbs. Police had almost no leads, but the media had labeled the killer as "The Dulston Cannibal" after a particularly gruesome homicide was discovered in Leeson Alley.

The last photograph taken by a startled survivor one night at Caffin Library. Skeptics refute the "ghost" as nothing more than "swamp gas", a claim the Dulston Tourism Board fully supports.

Then in 1996, while on a routine patrol, police finally arrested "The Dulston Cannibal" after he was captured in an elaborate trap while attempting to murder several teenagers and their dog. The teenagers claimed to be unlicensed detectives who routinely solved mysterious crimes and the police force commended them for their heroic efforts in helping arrest the serial killer. In the end the murderer was identified as Old Man Jenkins, and while by all terms supposedly a normal man, during the trial he insisted that he was in fact a zombie even after police had unmasked him of his zombie costume. Having dismissed his own defense attorney Old Man Jenkins tried in vain to plead his case, but it quickly became obvious that he was stark raving mad. In light of his mental state he was spared the death penalty and instead sentenced to life in prison without parole. Old Man Jenkins' final words, as they dragged him kicking and screaming from the courthouse, were, "Putting me away won't kill me! I'm a zombie! Brains! I'll eat your brains!".

In the years that followed the case of "The Dulston Cannibal" was all but forgotten. That was until 2003, when Old Man Jenkins pulled off a daring escape from the mental asylum where he had been imprisoned. Police tracked him down in a matter of hours and would have apprehended him had not a sudden hostage situation at the Caffin Library forced the confrontation to end in gunfire and the death of Old Man Jenkins. Ironically, had Old Man Jenkins survived a year or so longer he might very well have actually had his wish to truly become a zombie as Malton became gripped in the zombie epidemic survivors today know all too well.

An addendum to this grim tale is the persistent rumors that the library is haunted. Survivors have, from time to time, whispered that anyone who stays overnight at the library will sometimes catch glimpses of a ghostly apparition shambling aimlessly down the library's narrow bookshelf aisles or hallways, disappearing each time it's almost confronted only to reappear elsewhere. Even fewer still admit to having heard the specter mutter the fateful phrase: "I'm a zombie...". Ah, poor Old Man Jenkins... even in undeath he was still not a zombie.

Barricade Policy

This building must never be more than Very Strongly (VS+2) barricaded. This barricade level has been set forth in the Dulston Optimal Defense Diagram, a strategic barricade policy that is enforced by all member groups of the Dulston Alliance. This building's purpose is to serve as an access point for all survivors and a safehouse for inexperienced survivors who do not possess the Free Running skill. Visitors are requested to never barricade beyond Very Strongly unless the building is currently under siege from 5 or more zombies. Note that any survivors associated with the Dulston Alliance have the right to lower the barricades back to Very Strongly if they discover them raised higher without just cause.

Current Events

December 11th, 2006 - The Palytoxin Gang, as members of the Dulston Alliance, have claimed Caffin Library as a border outpost in the alliance's war against DORIS and other murderers attempting to enter Dulston. All survivors are welcome to seek shelter in the library, unless they intend to commit murder in the suburb.

November 15th, 2006 - Members of DORIS persist in their claims of controlling all Dulston. Taking a page straight from Conquerors 101 DORIS has instigated a policy whereby local buildings and streets throughout the suburb have been renamed by their group, in this case, the library is now known as the National Library of Iraq as far as DORIS is concerned.

July 25th, 2006 - FOXHOUND has placed a Class A Bounty on the "Caffin Library Killer" who was confirmed to be none other than Toben. As such Toben is found guilty for a long list of murdered innocents. More recently, a member of FOXHOUND and of the D.D.D.S. were attacked while sheltering at the library.
