Suggestion:20100218 Glancing Blow
20100218 Glancing Blow

Suggestion type
Survivor and Zombie Skill
Suggestion scope
Melee attacks for humans and zombies.
Suggestion description
Adds a new skill for zombies and survivors called Glancing Blow, going under the Hand-to-Hand tree for survivors and the Vigour Mortis tree for zombies. Basically alters the random-number-generator to add in a small range where assuming a certain set of numbers (eg. 41-100) equals a miss, a few numbers in the miss range (eg. 50-60) would mean that a glancing blow is struck, dealing one damage, and server strain due to this will be non-existent. This only works with melee weapons, including the claw and bite attacks of a zombie.
If you attempt to bite someone (with Infection of course) and score a glancing blow, the victim is not infected. Similarly, if a survivor with Headshot kills using a glancing blow, it is not a headshot. However, when grasping a target and biting with this skill, zombies are twenty percent less likely to lose their grip on the target (essentially change the chance of a miss causing a grip loss to 30 percent when the miss was caused by a bite) with the cost that misses don't even have a chance of scoring a glance.
Does not affect barricades, generators, transmitters, etc.
Thanks to Aichon for explaining the RNG and HonestMistake for the tangling grasp idea.

Keep Votes
- Keep - Author's keep vote. --Johnny Yossarian 04:44, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
- Keep - I'm all for it, as long as the glancing blow is something like 5%. Not often enough to make a BIG difference, but often enough to be a happy little surprise once in a while. --Maverick Talk - OBR 404 09:12, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
- Keep - Seems ok. --AORDMOPRI ! T 21:09, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
- Keep....but be careful - Make sure it's a low percentage and that it can damage gennies, lights and paintings etc --Angusburger 21:39, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
- Keep - But only because DEM Zergs can abuse it. >.> --Karloth Vois ¯\(°_o)/¯ 03:21, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
- keep The tangling grasp bit (my idea) make it much less of a one sided Buff while still keeping it reasonable. Maverick may have a point about lowering the %'s to make it a much rarer event but even so I like it. --Honestmistake 12:18, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
Kill Votes
- Kill - I don't like how you can't infect people from glancing blows, lets face it a bite is a bite. --Alex1guy 18:44, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
- RE: I feel it is necessary, if I wanted this to help infection rates I would have simply added ten percent hit chance onto the bite attack. As far as in-story justification... Have you ever been scratched or even bit hard enough that it didn't break the skin but left a superficial mark and still hurt alot? That's a glancing blow.--Johnny Yossarian 06:17, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
- Kill - If you want the RNG to be on your side just sacrifice a virgin to it, otherwise you're always bound to miss. -- 08:29, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
- Kill - Too complex; there are simpler ways of making melee attacks a bit more effective. --MikeLemmer 09:25, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
- Kill - "Does not affect barricades, generators, transmitters, etc".--Yonnua Koponen Talk ! Contribs 10:35, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
- Kill - I may have explained how RNGs typically work for this sort of thing, but I'm afraid I'm not a fan of the idea. I feel that it unnecessarily complicates a system that is already too complex for some people to grasp. —Aichon— 18:12, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
- Kill - It just seems like a weird and uncommon buff to melee weapons, but there's no trade-off.--GANG Giles Sednik CAPD 23:03, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
- Kill - Not realistic. How does one practice "kind of hitting something"? It's an okay suggestion, but not one I actually want to see implemented and added to the big list of passed peer review suggestions. It's just a bit too pointless.--Acidifiers 11:37, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
Spam/Dupe Votes
- Spam - A skill that improves your chances to hit when you miss? The oxymoronic nature of that concept staggers me. Every skill in the game represents some ability or knowledge that you have had to work or train for. How do you practise hitting things when you've already missed them? Is this some obscure Tibetan martial art that I completely didn't hear about when I was training? There's no way to practise hitting when you've missed, you practise to hit in the first place. This is blind luck as a quantified skill. Let's not ignore the fact that it's a stealth survivor buff, a fact that has never been addressed by the suggester. And finally, a bite that doesn't break the skin won't ever cause even one damage, some people call that lots of fun, it is certainly not on a par with a full out punch. -- . . <== DDR Approved Editor 21:46, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
- Spam - As Iscariot, above. A skill which makes me a klutz in combat, wtf centaurs??? --WanYao 12:39, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
- Spam - Using absolute values instead of relative values means that survivors with their lower melee hit% get more out of this than zombies. Excluding infection, de-cading and GKing just aids this imbalance. This suggestion is also incomplete, as it doesn't suggest concrete "glancing blow"%-ranges and doesn't adress if glancing blows yet give combat XP.--Spiderzed 13:27, 21 February 2010 (UTC)
