Local knowlege

Timestamp: SeventythreeTalk 15:04, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
Type: Skill.
Scope: Surviors.
Description: This'd be a bit contraversial, I know.

O.k. New skill, cost 100 XP, under the civilian skill tree. Consumer class would now start with this.

Having the new skill would create a new button, cost 1AP to use on the control panel. This would act like the scent death skill, but with tactical resource buildings. Once clicked, you would recieve a message telling you the rougth direction of the nearest of each type of PD, hospital, Mall or firestation in a limited area. maybe a 7-square radius, basicaly any TRB you could reach with 7AP. For example, you would receive a message a little like this you take a minuite to get your bearings. To the best of your knowlege there is a mall a little way north, a Fire department just a bit south, a PD west and a hospital to the north east

If Necrotech employment is also purchased, the nearest NT facility within a 7 block radius would also show up. If there are no appropriate buildings of any type the message would read You take a minuite to get your bearings. You remember that there are no particuarly useful buildigns in the area

Now, the main point of this would be to provide a skill that might be a bit more useful to new players, especialy those who do not, for whatever reason metagame. Shopping is realy not a very useful skill for a starting character, but I beleive this may be of more use. It represents someone who has been a resident of Malton for several years, and knows the city a lot better than a commuting scientist, or military personel.

Discussion (Local knowlege)

Wow. That's great!!! Luv it. Unless there's an obveous flaw I am not seeing. BoboTalkClown 15:08, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

Hmm. There almost certainly is, you know. I've looked at this from several angles, but there's noe I can see. I'm jsut trying to provide a more useful starting skill for some characters, In between trying to think of a decent zombie skill.--SeventythreeTalk 15:10, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
For the whole city? Its a bit rich. Maybe for a chunk. Say local knowledge, South East? Or is that a local news show?--Rosslessness 15:12, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
I shouldn't think so. I was kinda thinking that it would mean you'd never be totaly lost, becasue you've lived in the city for so long.--SeventythreeTalk 15:21, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
OK, so would it replace shopping or be in addition?--Rosslessness 15:23, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
Yes, instead of starting with shopping, consumers would start with local knowlege, something to tell them whereabouts useful buildings might be, as opposed to something that they won't actualy be able to use at all until they get freerunning. Shopping would still exist as a skill though.--SeventythreeTalk 15:25, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
Cool. As in your example its only vague? Its North etc? --Rosslessness 15:27, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
Yes. basicaly, north, northeast, east, southeast, south, southwest, west, northwest and 1-2 blocks away a little way south 3-5 blocks away south 5 + blocks away quite a way south something like that. Compass directions and vauge distance only.--SeventythreeTalk 15:30, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

I like it. --GunFox13 15:13, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

hmnnnnn.... but they'd be heading to probably overbarricaded buildings.... --WanYao 19:49, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

You could add some text at the end like, but you probably wont be able to get in.--Rosslessness 20:28, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
That isn't needed. BoboTalkClown 20:35, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

I like the idea, because it helps reduce the need to metagame, for those that don't want to use a third-party map. Not quite sure how this "control panel" justification works out though. Maybe it could be something like "read bulletin board", with the idea that someone posted a bunch of items on the bulletin board about where to find tactical resource buildings. --PdeqTalk* 21:13, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

The obvious problem is places like Caiger or any other resource rich areas that usually have resource buildings far enough away that most people don't realize they are there. This would basically make all resource buildings in x area defended better, hurts zombies, hurts the game.--Karekmaps?! 21:50, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

Hm. O.K, just a little thing I was considering, balance out any human benifits, the skill is transferable, zombies with Memories Of Life can use it, allows ferals to hone in on important resource buildings, and if used in conjunction with scent death, important resource buildings under seige.--SeventythreeTalk 22:01, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

O.k. Much as a love being alive, I really like the zombie side of this.--Rosslessness 23:09, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
Now its even better!!! BoboTalkClown 18:09, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
Gimmie gimmie!! --BlobdudeTalk TM MC 19:28, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

Yeah i gotta agree with Ross here, I can't find a fault in it either now that it's for zombies too. Acoustic Pie 16:22, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

To be honest, it might wind up being even more useful for zombies than humans, well, feral zombies at least. I'd quite like Karek's opinion on this, he's always a good judge on how useful something might be to zombies.--SeventythreeTalk 19:21, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

I like it, but something in my gut tells me that it'll be resisted by wiki-goers because it's... OH MY GOD!... change. Definetly would have to include zombies too, or it'll just be shot down as another pointless human buff. --TriPolarClicky! 20:34, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

This sounds like something that, thematically, should require memories of life if you're a zombie. Although gameplay-wise... it'd be frustrating to not be able to use a skill you've already bought until you bought another one. --Ms.Panes 22:15, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

I have another idea. Maps as find-able items. You can find an old map of the general area... It takes up 2% encumbrance and opens a screen like a binoc scout or NecroNet scan... It'd be like newspapers, but useful. Ah.... let's just set up tourist information booths... New Building: Information Kiosk... hmph. --WanYao 23:09, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

I'm way too busy right now to sort this out, but sometime in the next week or so, I'll be putting this up for voting. Any comments?--SeventythreeTalk 11:41, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

Higher search odds are helpful eventually...this is not helpful at all. We already can metagame and get the map for 0 AP. Gamers should use the more effienct strat, rather than waste AP for a flavor skill such as this.--ShadowScope 15:50, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

From that comment I'm sure you'd be surprised at the amount of players that never even come to the wiki. It's far less common then that seems to indicate, just like groups, while a major factor in the game, are actually less than about 5-10% of the total population.--Karekmaps?! 17:16, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

I like playing a zombie because I don't have to look at the metagaming map in order to play. I can wander around anywhere I like, without worrying about being stranded outside or too far away from a hospital to get healed. Any building with brains is good enough for me. It's very freeing. But when I play a human, I have to constantly refer to the map because if I waste precious AP going in the wrong direction I could easily end up totally screwed. Honestly, I'd like to be able to play this game without metagaming at all. Since people are saying "You can get the map for 0AP", maybe make it so that basic information is 0AP, like "A sign says Mr. Garrison Hospital is two miles north." or "A foul stench wafting from the west indicates a nearby junkyard." You could have a skill for getting better information, or maybe the GPS could actually be used to tell you how to get somewhere instead of just listing coordinates, but if you really want people to not need the maps you're going to have to give them something without a skill/item. Maybe without GPS, you get general directions, but with it you get precise directions? --Ms.Panes 23:46, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

"A police station in a bit north, a hospital is to the west, and a brilliant idea is right in front of you".--Jon Pyre 14:15, 26 December 2007 (UTC)

I hate looking the map unless i absolutely have too. Zeds should have to wait until they get MoL but other than that it seems good!--Honestmistake 16:09, 26 December 2007 (UTC)
