Paul "woke up" in West Becktown, and spent is first months in Malton helping out, healing, and generally trying to gain some experience. After completing his initial studies (and a brief leave of absence), he is now a doctoral student who also helps to TA any newer students or visitors. He has absolutely no relation to Paul Leahy the murderer, or the character from Saw (or, for the matter, the federal judge); those were all (occasionally unfortunate) coincidences.
