With the fall of [[Caiger Mall]], there was no longer a center of survivor power in Malton. Recent changes in the game mechanics (Ransacking and One Body Per Dump), couple with the observed high degree of organization of the hordes, the survivors seem to be at a disadvantage in Malton lately.


Caiger remained a safe haven as long as it did due to superior tactics. When those tactics failed, so did Caiger. The main tactic the horde used against Caiger was resource starvation. The siege first took out the surrounding NT buildings, which effectively blocked revive efforts. Any reinforcements from other malls were too far away to respond quickly.

As hordes grow larger and become better organized, and as new game mechanics have given zeds the upper hand during sieges, survivors need to respond in a new way.
A complete history of the SSZ has not been yet compiled.  The project started in late 2006 when [[User:Foobarosa|Foobarosa]] came up with the idea.  He also founded the [[Zone Defenders]] group.  In mid 2007, [[User:Benigno|Benigno]] assumed control over the project, with the help of many key groups, important people, and the ton of survivors that have supported the area.  [[Roftwood]] and [[Stanbury Village]] are historically the cultural center for the zone; notable awesome places include [[The Kilt Store]], [[Quartly Library]], [[St. Ethelbert's Hospital (Roftwood)|St. Ethelbert's Hospital]], [[Eligius General Hospital]], and [[The Truell Museum]]. Each mall also has developed its own culture.

Anyway from what I saw the barricade plans were virtually unchanged, as well as revive and entry points.  Strategic support of our tactical resources remained in place.

By early 2008 the population of the zone was pushing 1000 or so, and the Zone was definitely on the menu of the largest hordes in the game. RRF forces numbered in the hundreds, and their strike teams and death cultists were in full attack mode.  [[Mall Tour|Mall Tours]] came. [[LUE]] had an army of several hundred. There were valiant survivor efforts where buildings held for weeks against constant attacks from massive hordes. Zombies approached the area very strategically; a small horde of 30-60 zombies couldn't even take out a building for very long. There were defeats as well, with zombies engaging in complex strategies to crack barricades and hold our resources.   Many of the tactics and organization of this area are in response to facing hordes of these sizes.

The area was popular and home to about 3 dozen small groups, each controlling a small piece of territory. Many also shifted their attention around the Zone as needed, and other groups from outside the zone would come assist.  This is still the model that is followed today.  However, there has been a shift away from group membership on the part of the general populous.  The SSZ can easily function like one big group, as it has its own <s>[http://s11.zetaboards.com/SSZ/index/ forums]</s> [https://discord.gg/Ur2gx4Z discord]. An absence of group affiliation is also a natural consequence of the security of the SSZ. The awesome personalities of our individual survivors help make the zone great!
It sounds nice, but there are a number of problems that must be overcome.
* Part of the zone overlaps with the [[Ridleybank]] suburb, which puts the Zone in direct and immediate conflict with the [[RRF]].
* The scale of this effort is unprecedented in Malton. Others have observed on the Talk page that this project will required a '''minimum''' participation of about 300 survivors to make this work. It will be an uphill and long-term effort to build the kind of momentum needed. The success of the Zone will require a level of communcation and cooperation not yet seen in Malton.


Any history compilation involves a great deal of research.  I hope a complete history of the Zone since its inception can be written at some point.<br>

The Core is in the center area of the Zone. It is made up of four Police Departments, a factory, a hospital, and an NT. These should be the primary fallback resources in the event of any large-scale compromise, and serve as the staging area for retaking a compromised territory. In the event that the Zone Core is compromised, each area has external fall-back positions.

Barricade Plan Discussion

Responsible barricade policies are ones that include access to resource buildings as well as strategically placed safehouses and entry points. A strategic and flexible power grid is also essential. Although we generally reference the Uniform Barricading Policy, local adjustments are vital for survival as well. Some of our suburbs are non-UBP compliant intentionally.

Barricade maps that can be easily referenced should be listed on each suburb's wiki page, and discussion is encouraged.

We will be using the frequency 26.03 -- the official Radio Map frequency for central Malton. Most of the Zone falls within this region.


Benefits

  1. Each mall is less than ten blocks from at least two other malls.
  2. Hildebrand Mall and Nichols Mall are less than ten blocks from three other malls, and both have NT buildings and Revive Points nearby.
  3. The Zone has 9 NT buildings and six revive points, all with backups. The NT buildings are well distributed; some along the perimeter, some in the center of the zone, all within 5 blocks of a mall.
  4. Standing at the center of the Survivor Security Zone, a survivor will be less than 10 blocks away from four malls.
  5. Each mall is a fall-back position for two other malls, and a staging point for retaking two other mall areas.
  6. Each suburb has internal and external fallback points and dedicated patrol routes
  7. The Zone has a number of police stations that dot the perimeter as outposts and fall back positions.
  8. The Zone also allows Survivors to develop strategies that are beyond mall-level defense and even beyond suburb-level defense. The Zone exists across multiple suburbs; the definition of the zone was developed by looking only at resource points.


How Can I Help?

The basic idea is this: strategy and communication are the keys to efficient territory protection. Read the documents in the "reading materials" section below. Understand how to defend a resource point against a zombie attack and have like 5 backup plans anyway if the resource does fall. Communicate with your group or on the message boards about what's going on.

To help in sustaining the Survivor Security Zone, you need to do a few things:

  • If you are a player without a group, Join the Zone Defenders group, or another group that supports the SSZ.
  • If you are in a group, talk to your leaders about supporting the zone. If you're the leader, have a liaison join the SSZ forums. Groups can easily adopt their own section of the Zone to patrol, and all groups will need to coordinate efforts and work together to keep the Zone safe for all survivors.
  • Relocate to the Zone itself. Tune your radio to 26.03, and pick an area or specific location to support.

SSZ History

Here is a list of the groups that historically supported the SSZ

A complete history of the SSZ has not been yet compiled. The project started in late 2006 when Foobarosa came up with the idea. He also founded the Zone Defenders group. In mid 2007, Benigno assumed control over the project, with the help of many key groups, important people, and the ton of survivors that have supported the area. Roftwood and Stanbury Village are historically the cultural center for the zone; notable awesome places include The Kilt Store, Quartly Library, St. Ethelbert's Hospital, Eligius General Hospital, and The Truell Museum. Each mall also has developed its own culture.

Anyway from what I saw the barricade plans were virtually unchanged, as well as revive and entry points. Strategic support of our tactical resources remained in place.

By early 2008 the population of the zone was pushing 1000 or so, and the Zone was definitely on the menu of the largest hordes in the game. RRF forces numbered in the hundreds, and their strike teams and death cultists were in full attack mode. Mall Tours came. LUE had an army of several hundred. There were valiant survivor efforts where buildings held for weeks against constant attacks from massive hordes. Zombies approached the area very strategically; a small horde of 30-60 zombies couldn't even take out a building for very long. There were defeats as well, with zombies engaging in complex strategies to crack barricades and hold our resources. Many of the tactics and organization of this area are in response to facing hordes of these sizes.

The area was popular and home to about 3 dozen small groups, each controlling a small piece of territory. Many also shifted their attention around the Zone as needed, and other groups from outside the zone would come assist. This is still the model that is followed today. However, there has been a shift away from group membership on the part of the general populous. The SSZ can easily function like one big group, as it has its own forums discord. An absence of group affiliation is also a natural consequence of the security of the SSZ. The awesome personalities of our individual survivors help make the zone great!

Any history compilation involves a great deal of research. I hope a complete history of the Zone since its inception can be written at some point.
