You are at the Kitchen Monument, a black granite statue of a soldier that leans to one side.

History

Originally dedicated to the memory of the First Earl Kitchener in 1922, this statue features the Lord Kitchener in full military dress, pointing with an outstretched arm. The base of the monument originally read, "In Memory of Lord Horatio Herbert Kitchener."

The base of the monument was damaged during the Battle of Britain, which caused the last two letters of the Earl's family name to be chipped off. This damage was never repaired. Subsequent generations of Maltonians thus came to refer to the statue as "the Kitchen Monument," and a popular prank on All Hallow's Eve was to drape kitchen towels over the statue's outstretched arm.

In late 2006, during the Shacknews invasion of Kempsterbank, The Knights Templar began using the monument as their northern revive point. It was de-commissioned a few months later.
