Shotgun Minor Re-balance

Timestamp: Slamcool 21:40, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
Type: Balance change and improvement for realism.
Scope: Low level and unskilled Survivors.
Description: For someone that already has the Basic firearm training, the shotgun has a 30% Accuracy. For anybody else it's 5% Accuracy, like the pistol. I am a consumer level one as I though "Shopping" would help me finding things while living the stress to start with almost nothing; That "Survival" mindset you know.

I actually found a shotgun; I thought I was so lucky and that I found something very helpful to me. Until I used it... I fully unloaded and reloaded it all around a Zombie without hitting it once; I switch to my baseball bat and BANG, it as a superior 10% hit chance so at least I do a little damage. Yes 5% more chance than with a shotgun.

Well to me, the way I see shotguns in life, is that you don't really need to aim as accurately as with a pistol, so even a little newcomer consumer that ends up with a shotgun should start with like 10% Accuracy. Then when getting the Basic firearm Training it would all even out at 30% like it does now.

This would add little strength to the "no skilled" starters that were lucky enough to find a shotgun. And still way below the 30% so it keeps you the interest on getting that Basic Firearm Skill.

My expectations when I found this gun were:

1- I found something a little better than my pistol or my baseball bat

2- I found something rare.

Well, it didn't really meet my expectations and since I thought they were reasonable enough, I'm sharing them with all of you and see what you think. A shotgun should require less aiming for unskilled citizens, it sounds acceptable and just more realistic.

  1. keep can't see anything wrong with your reasoning and can't see it doing any harm. An alternative might be to have "buck-shot" rounds which do 5damage but have +10% accuracy... think that has been suggested and killed before though. --Honestmistake 00:17, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
  2. Keep - I think people are misreading this suggestion. It doesn't increase the overall accuracy of the shotgun; only the base accuracy. Someone witf BFT will still only have 30% accuracy and a maxed out player will still only have 65% accuracy. I can see nothing wrong with this suggestion. --Reaper with no name TJ! 16:04, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

Kill Votes

  1. Kill - The shotgun (despite having lower accuracy than the baseball bat) does more average damage than the baseball bat. That is of course without calculating the AP used for searching for ammo. I think that maybe it is supposed to be that people choosing a non military course are to find alternate XP gains to begin with. Starting with shopping leaves it rather open ended (unlike NT or Firemen and doctors), but gives you the opportunity (or would have if the malls were not all EHB) to mass supplies and then use it and gain XP despite the large amounts used (this is only my opinion). - Whitehouse 23:03, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
  2. Kill - If you increased the base accuracy of shotguns, wouldn't that cause the people with firearm training to have a 35% chance of hitting and eventually maxing out at 70%?--Bluish wolf 02:02, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
Sorry for my lack of wiki syntax to reply in the appropriate format. To reply both comments; your points are actually valid to me. My suggestion in trying to address that, if possible; keep the basic training go up to only 30% as it is now to even things back at that point. I did not calculate the stats but I think that keeping the scope within until you get the training makes the upgrade very minor. Now it's true that some low level player that successfully found the shotgun (not sure about the probability) could actually lend some more hits with this 10 point weapon, 5% more chances. That you spend in 2 AP before having to reload. It's not a very efficient weapon so I would guess the overall impact on balance would not be noticed much. Except that it would make me use it and spend those AP for the sake of using a shotgun and that you don't need to be as accurate with it. It's a nice way for non-military people and kind of realistic. Bit more enjoyable at low level and then back to normal behavior with basic training. How about if we look at it that way? Slamcool 02:30, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
  3. Kill - It's reallistic, but then we shouldn't have zombies, should we? That percentage is set like that to balance the shotguns for newbies, so they choose other weapons until they have BFT: don't mess with it. --Matthew Fahrenheit YRCT+1 05:13, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
I am very interested in your comment, since I'm new; You say the percentage is set like that on purpose so that I choose another weapon. Now how did you get to know that? I was looking all over this wiki in trying to find that kind of info: Current balance mechanic and their intended gameplay purpose. I other words, I would like to know the same things that you do in regards to the designers intents of the items and features of this game. A little help from you to get that info will be greatly appreciated.Slamcool 13:26, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
Oh... the different Firearms and Melee Weapons pages can give you some insight, and the geniality of a guy gave us MBR, altough it's kinda outdated now. If you want to know from other guys experience, then have a look at Guides. Seeing those you'll know that unless you started a class with a combat skill ready you shouldn't try to get experience by killing zombies until you get at least one, if not many of those skills. --Matthew Fahrenheit YRCT+1 17:58, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
  4. Kill - With no training, which is harder, firing a gun (a powerful gun) or swinging a baseball bat? -- Dance Emot.gifTheDavibob T 07:27, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
  5. Kill - It balances out in the end. If people choose to start with non-military types, surely they must understand that they're not starting out swinging. If you want to fight instead of survive it's either cop, fireman or private. seems reasonable intuitive to me.--Vista 08:42, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
  6. As above. --•▬ ▬••▬ • •••• •▬ ▬•▬• ▬•▬ #nerftemplatedsigs 12:43, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
  7. Kill - As above. --Saluton 13:59, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
  8. Kill - Yep. As above. Without Basic Firearm Training, you don't know how to use a gun. At all. But one thing I would like to see is other Military survivors get a gun boost like this. So Scouts and Medics get a 10% chance, going up to 30% with Basic Firearms. They are, after all, in the military. But that won't happen any time soon. -Mark D. Stroyer 16:18, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
  9. Kill Shotguns are better as it is. No reason to add yet another advantage to them. - BzAli 16:25, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
  10. Kill - since we're arguing for realism - as I've never fired a gun in my life, I'd be as likely to break my wrist with the recoil as be able to shoot straight, even with a shotgun. BFT required. --Funt Solo Scotland flag.JPG 16:41, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
For concerns about realism if never tried it in your life, this page's two first paragraph are very useful: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shotgun The following quote ending paragraph 2 is very meaningful :"It is favored by law enforcement for its low penetration and high stopping power, while many American households use it as a home defense weapon for the same reasons along with the aforementionned ease of aim." Ressource; Wikipedia. --Slamcool 22:32, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
  11. Kill - TheDavibob makes a good point. --ZombieSlay3rSig.png 22:49, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
