The Freeguard Building

Description

The Freeguard Building is located at coordinates [5, 84] in the suburb of Foulkes Village. It is a large grey-stone building with pillars along its front and a mobile phone mast atop its roof. When the building is powered, it enables mobile phone service within its suburb. The phone mast is serviced by Malton Telephone, and the building is under the protection of the Crew Avenue Police Department.

History

Sensing an opportunity with the nearby Fyfhyde Ironworks, Franklin Freeguard bought an undeveloped parcel of land next to the huge iron factory and began work on a large skyscraper. Freeguard hoped that the executives of Fyfhyde would grow tired of the iron working factory's noise and fumes and seek more upscale offices. Freeguard's gamble paid off, as most of the upper floors of his new building were inhabited by the corporate offices of Fyfhyde Iron. The lower floors, through the years, housed the offices of various law firms, accountants and other professionals.

As the fortunes of Fyfhyde Iron began to decline, however, the Freeguard family found the building increasingly difficult to maintain. More and more floors of the building were vacated as the iron company shrunk and eventually folded. By the mid 1980's, most of the upper floors of the building were in disrepair, while the bottom floors housed small local shops and offices. The Freeguard family did make a deal with MalTel to locate a cellular phone antenna on the roof of the bulding, and used the monthly rent to repair the upper floors to a habitable state.

The remaining members of the Freeguard family fled Malton in the early stages of the outbreak, and the care of the building has fallen to the Crew Avenue Police Department, with the assistance of the remaining MalTel staff, whose technical expertise are invaluable in keeping the cellular antenna running.

Current Status

Dec 19, 2019 - Been elsewhere for most of the year so I'd figure I'd check in to see how things are in the rest of the SW quadrant. All quiet, genny needs gas but otherwise ok. MR2Di4 (talk) 07:27, 20 December 2019 (UTC)

Feb 19, 2019 - Up and running, the zeds seem to be coming in from the eastern suburbs but we'll keep the phones working as long as possible... --MR2Di4 (talk) 19:22, 19 February 2019 (UTC)
