20090227 Bricks: Blunt Ranged Weaponry for the Rest of Us

CaptainVideo 23:38, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

Suggestion type
New item (brick - projectile, bludgeoning implement). This actually seems like a staggeringly obvious idea, and I apologize if it has already been suggested. I have checked, and this seems to be the first time - but if it is not, you have my apologies.

Suggestion scope
A single-use weapon that allows those using it to either throw it, attempting to hit opponents, or use it to beat on stuff. Importantly, this would also be weapon that the undead could use as well as the living - and a weapon that people could actually search for after they die.

Suggestion description

Simply put, bricks would have pros and cons. They would be common, and fairly accurate - but heavy, and capable of only minimal damage. Details are as follows:

I believe that the game lacks a really good "beginner" weapon - something plentiful but not especially dangerous. In the wreckage of Malton, it seems reasonable to me that shattered masonry would be common (the description of streets suggest that they are, in fact, filled with rubble). They would be found exclusively outside (either outside buildings, or in streets) and in ruined buildings. 20% chance of finding on searching outside; 8% in. Same for zombies when searching.

You're probably thinking, But this means everyone will be pelting each other with bricks. Not quite. Bricks are heavy, and would have an encumbrance of 5%, meaning that nobody could carry very many of them.

Bricks would be exclusively single use. You could either throw it (losing it) or strike a barricade with it (shattering it). There is no skill set that goes with bricks, although the living, who retain their fine motor skills, would find better success with throwing them. The dead, however, would have better success in using them against barricades. My logic here is that the dead are more impervious to wear and tear (inasmuch as they tear down barricades by hand, something that would probably cut up a human pretty badly).

Against barricades, generators and radios the dead would have a 25% chance of success and do 3 damage (more damage than hands alone). For humans, the damage would be 2, but the accuracy would be the same. I figure that it doesn't take a whole lot of skill to walk up to something and beat on it.

Against opponents, the living would have a better chance of actually hitting something. 30% chance of contact, yielding 1 damage. The dead would have a 15% chance of contact when throwing a brick, but the damage would be the same.

Stat shortlist

  • Finding bricks: 20% (streets, outside buildings); 8% (inside ruined buildings). Same for living and dead.
  • Encumbrance: 5% per brick.
  • Use: Single-use.
  • Attacking opponents: 30%, 1 damage (from the living); 15%, 1 damage (from the dead)
  • Attacking cades, etc.: 25%, 3 damage (from the dead); 25%, 2 damage (from the living)

Keep Votes

  1. I'll take any questions anybody might have. -CaptainVideo 23:39, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

Kill Votes

  1. Needs work.--Pesatyel 04:22, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
What would you suggest? -CaptainVideo 06:28, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
That you take it to the discussion page.--Pesatyel 10:40, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
  2. Kill - Needs work, use Developing Suggestions next time please. Linkthewindow  Talk  11:11, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
  3. Kill - Zombies searching for items doesn't fit well. I like the name of the suggestion, though. --ZsL 05:42, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
  4. Kill - As Link. --Midianian¦T¦DS¦SP¦ 09:39, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
  5. Kill - Points for originality, but definitely needs discussion first. Take it to Developing Suggestions, as Link suggested, and bring it back here later. --Maverick Talk - OBR Praise Knowledge! 404 10:53, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
  6. Kill - Yes I would like to hurl bricks at people but it should not be effective against barricades. --Kamikazie-Bunny 19:10, 1 March 2009 (UTC)

Spam/Dupe Votes

  1. Spam - Fatally flawed due to the incorrect research of the suggester. Zombies don't get to search. Know what you're suggesting from every angle before cluttering the system next time. Also this is a dupe of about half a thousand thrown weapons and rock suggestions. -- To know the face of God is to know madness....Praise knowledge! Mischief! Mayhem! The Rogues Gallery!. <== DDR Approved Editor 00:09, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
I was aware of that. Part of this was to suggest that they be allowed to search (although only for bricks, not other items). Sorry if I didn't make that clear. -CaptainVideo 02:31, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
  2. Spam - You searched and discovered a rock. You try to do anything with it. You die.--Suicidal Angel, Help needed? 00:36, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
  3. Spam - Please don't let zombies search - That could create a lot of new problems --Explodey 13:17, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
  4. Spam - A knife or claws, with no skills, would still be better. I don't see the point, unless the point is to let zombies search. --dgw 11:19, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
  5. Spam - As Explodey. DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION (TALK | CONTRIBS) 02:38, 5 March 2009 (UTC)
