Description
A much-loved church, with Gothic arches, a square tower and iron railings, all of which make it a handy safehouse (despite the removal of all of the doors for firewood).
History
Martin of Vinetown started out as a Roman soldier, charged with supervising the planting of the first vines in the new Roman conquest of Vintonia. He was baptized as an adult and later became a monk. It is understood that he was a kind man who led a quiet and simple life; after his release from the Roman army, he migrated to Pegton and settled in this area as a subsistence farmer.
The most famous legend of his life is that he once cut his cloak in half to share with a beggar during a snowstorm, to save the beggar from dying of the cold. He was later claimed by Pegton as the patron saint of solidarity between rich and poor, and the church was renamed in his honour after 1991. It was formerly the Church of the Holy Blood, a name which in retrospect is now more appropriate.
