Before the Malton Outbreak
Rebecca Lawrence was born in Malton in February 6, 1980.
The only daughter of two very supportive parents (Allen Lawrence and Kayleigh Park-Lawrence - both missing), she showed at very young age an uncanny academic aptitude: shy and extremely intelligent she forsook what one could call "a normal childhood", trading most of her playtime with friends for lonely hours with books and diligent music lessons (ballet classes and violin). She lived with her parents in the suburb of Chancelwood, where she attended the Kempe Way School, until the age of 17. She was a relatively popular girl due to her good appearence, assertiveness, notorious sarcastic humor and intelligence, but she shot down the advances from the most pretentious boys with merciless, quick witted replies - a natural evolution of her originally shy nature. She often said that she had many acquaintances but only a handful of friends, and in this exclusive roll she always included Dilana Supernova, Robert Vos (more of him later) and Alexander Priest (missing).
Rebecca's uncle, Arthur Lawrence (missing, presumed dead), was a seasoned physician and contributed much to his dearest niece's professional choice: at the age of 17, she moved to London dreaming of a comfortable future in the medical career. She graduated in Medicine "with honors" by the Imperial College London at the age of 24. Although London was definitely larger and more exhuberant than Malton, Rebecca found that she had no roots in that city: she returned to Malton, longing to live in her home city again.
It would not be long until she was working as an intern at St. Ferreol's Hospital, in the suburb of Dartside. During her time there, Dr. Lawrence was described as having an "almost obsessive sense of responsability, being extremely organized about her work and showing tremendous care towards her patients" (quote attributed Dr. Albert Penhew, former chief of staff). It was during this time that she began a more intimate relationship with her childhood friend, Robert Vos, and after three years the two announced their engagement to friends and family.
And life was good... for a while. But that was before the dark times, before the outbreak.
The Malton Outbreak
Nobody really knows what happened, or how it happened. But nobody can deny that Malton changed substantially from what it once was.
The strange "disease" that seemingly spread through contact was ignored at first; then, as reports of it increased exponentially, it flooded every newspaper, magazine, radio and television channel; and suddenly, the words on everyone's mouths were "epidemic", "zombie" and "outbreak". Without a second's warning, the city was under quarantine by the federal government and the military, and fear turned to panic as healthy citizens were rushly evacuated.
Dr. Lawrence, like many others, stayed behind. Unable to reach her parents, without any information regarding her few friends or her fiancé, she stayed calm - she had a duty to the people of Malton, and she would not let her personal life get in the way. As order crumbled and the barest public services began to falter, she worked harder than ever along a few colleagues in St. Ferreol's Hospital, tending to an increasingly large number of wounded civilians caught unguarded by the very same people who, once, were their neighbors and loved ones; people who, now, wanted nothing but to taste their blood and flesh.
It was after one extremely hard day of work that she was infected, when she was returning to a safe house near the hospital. It wasn't the bite that hurt the most; nor was it the excruciating pain that followed it and seemed to tear all of her internal organs apart with each step she took; nor was it the agonizing sensation as her heart stopped beating and she fell to the ground. What hurt the most was the sight of her beloved Robert Vos, completely twisted by the plague, as he dug his teeth into her.
After the Outbreak
She doesn't have any memories of what she did after she stood up as a zombie that first time, and she tries not to think of it: the dreadful possibilities haunt her most horrorful dreams and would also consume her waking hours. One day she opened her eyes, and the sight in front of her was of another woman wearing a scientist's jacket: the woman identified herself as a member of the Malton Forensics Unit and, very patiently, helped the newly revived Rebecca to get her bearings. It took her a while to recognise the woman as a former coleague from St. Ferreol's Hospital, since her memories were clouded and she felt completely numb - the only vivid image in her mind was that of Robert, and something in his eyes told her he was lost forever. If she was returned to life so could he, but would he be the same man she once loved? God... was she the same?
Determined that she would not leave Malton until she saw the end of the plague, Rebecca decided to take a more direct role in helping the city and its desperate survivors. She joined the Malton Emergency Medical Services.
