i think you should be able to hear gunshots in the surrounding area. whenever there are multiple shots fired on the same block within a few minutes time there would be a notice much like that for flare guns. you could put filters in the settings menu for ignoring shots baised on time passed, distance away, number of shots fired.
you dont have to give the exact number of shots either, like "you hear rapid gunfire 4 blocks north (1 hour and 32 minutes ago) or "you here multiple shotgun blasts comming from next door (2 hours ago)"
it would be cool if you could distinguish between pistol and shotgun fire aswell.
lets face it, you can here gunshots and in real life so why not put it in the game?
this isnt just a flavor text change it could be used by non-metagaming zombies and humans alike to figure out where the most activity is. as a human if you hear "a ton of gunfire from 3 blocks north"(or something to that affect) then you know there's proubly a zombie horde breaking in 3 blocks north. on the other hand as a zombie gunshots let you know where humans are alive and shoting.
different flavor texts should be used to tell the difference between 10 and 100 shots fired on the same block, for obvious reasons.
