Curton Mansion occupies four blocks in the Malton suburb of Chancelwood.
History
One of the oldest and wealthiest families in Malton, the Curton family made its fortune during the Industrial Revolution, providing iron and coal for virtually all of northern England. The progenitor of the family line, Mortimer Curton, was very secretive about his wealth. He invested huge amounts of money in governmental ventures, private industries, and even colonial endeavors.
Through the next several generations, the family grew, as did their wealth. Richard Curton, Mortimer's great-grandson, further advanced the family’s influence by getting elected Mayor of Chancelwood and serving for over 20 years.
