20071006 Flashlights

Uncle Bill 22:26, 6 October 2007 (BST)

Suggestion type
New item and skill

Suggestion scope
Survivors searching non-powered buildings

Suggestion description

Flashlights would be a new item to boost search rates when searching in an unpowered building. The bonus would be about 3% and after each successful search, there would be a small chance of the batteries dying.

Game mechanics: Encumberance 2%, found in Warehouses (4%), Fire Departments (3%), and Junkyards (2%). The odds of a flashlight dying would be similar to the way spray cans run out, and they would also last longer if your character had a new skill, "looting." Please note that flashlights ONLY work in unpowered buildings, so the RNG would only check to see if your batteries ran out whenever you successfully found something in an unpowered building (or outside).

Looting: This would be a new skill under the Shopping skill tree. Flashlights would last longer and you would also gain 5 XP whenever you successfully found an item in a ransacked building and only if the building was not powered.

Similar ideas: (So nobody cries dupe)

  1. Flashlight Version 2.0 This one was similar, but was rejected because the search bonus was too low to justify looking for it. Originally, I wanted to make my flashlight half as good as a generator (which would have been about 2.5%) but after seeing this, I increased it to 4%... still not as good as a generator's 5%.
  2. Looting This looting skill (from Peer Undecided) increased the search rate but did not provide XP gain.
  3. Looting, Bonus for Risky Tactics This one made it to peer reviewed, but as you can see works quite differently from my version of looting.

Please take a look at the [Talk:Suggestions#Flashlights|suggestions page] if you have any questions about this one. Also, special thanks to those who helped me work out the kinks.

Keep Votes

  1. Keep- Author vote. I wanted to provide a way to encourage actually trying to find stuff in ransacked and ruined buildings, help newbies, and get people out of the malls. --Uncle Bill 22:32, 6 October 2007 (BST)
  2. Keep- Because I don't want to see your self esteem die....--Someguy5031 04:56, 7 October 2007 (BST)
Keep - looks like people below don't even look at percentages. Anyway, 3% boost given by these flashlight is far below the generator being set up in the location (which is equal normal search rate). Actually it might even be not efficient enough to search for flashlight in terms of overall success of searching. --~~~~ [talk] 11:04, 7 October 2007 (BST)D-oh. just noticed xp bonus - vote changed --~~~~ [talk] 18:03, 7 October 2007 (BST)
  3. Change Get rid of the XP gain and I'll vote keep.Studoku 21:41, 7 October 2007 (BST)

Kill Votes

  1. Kill - Ditch the XP gain.-- dǝǝɥs ɯɐds: sʎɐʍ1ɐ! 23:23, 6 October 2007 (BST)
  2. Kill - The XP gain ditch --Pavluk A! E! 23:28, 6 October 2007 (BST)

  5. Kill - Gain XP the ditch --BoboTalkClown 00:33, 7 October 2007 (BST)
  6. Kill/Change- No XP gain! Hurry up and revise before they slaughter this worthy suggestion! --Vkkhamul 01:37, 7 October 2007 (BST)
  7. Kill - It's likely that most survivors in Malton already have light sources. Just like food, it's already there, but it's not directly represented in the game.--Jiangyingzi 02:28, 7 October 2007 (BST)
  8. Kill - Way to kill the Ditch the XP gain train!--  AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 02:52, 7 October 2007 (BST)
  9. Kill - I don't like flashlight ideas, they boost search rates without the danger of having a powered generator in the building. They are basically generators that you can turn off when you're not actively searching -- boxytalk • 03:01 7 October 2007 (BST)
  10. Kill - XP the gain ditch. Wait. --Druuuuu 04:58, 7 October 2007 (BST)
  11. Kill Ooooo, XP for searching... I wonder how many licks it will take take to get to 1k XP... ~A`Blue`JellyTME*V*I*L*? 06:12, 7 October 2007 (BST)
  12. Kill - XP gain, etc etc. Also inferior to the candles suggestion. Crazylilvietguy 07:14, 7 October 2007 (BST)
  13. Kill - XP gain the ditch. --Midianian|T|T:S|C:RCS| 11:17, 7 October 2007 (BST)
  14. Kill - I would totally camp in an unpowered warehouse and use my flashlight to gain xp searching for more flashlights. Except that's silly. --Pestilent Bob 13:01, 7 October 2007 (BST)
  15. Kill - XP gain for searching is unbalancing...you don't get XP for using Binoculars, shouldn't get XP for 'using' a flashlight. --Shazzelim 17:59, 7 October 2007 (BST)
  16. Kill - no XP should be given. --~~~~ [talk] 18:03, 7 October 2007 (BST)
  17. kill - no xp for finding a useful item!! and no no-risk gennies. and the best way to keep ppl out of the malls is to ransack them all muahahahhaa --WanYao 18:19, 7 October 2007 (BST)
  18. BROKEN RECORD TIME! - No XP gain. And that's the worst reason for a spam vote I've seen. Glenstone 02:39, 8 October 2007 (BST)
  19. Kill As per the above. Additional, no "free genny". --Karlsbad 08:47, 8 October 2007 (BST)
  20. Change it per majority above, resubmit without xp bonus, and I'll vote keep on the new one. --Slightly Lions 14:09, 8 October 2007 (BST)

Spam/Dupe Votes

  1. Spam - How many times do people have to be told? ONE THING AT A TIME! A suggestion that includes two (or more) new things (an item and a skill, in this case) is inherently unvotable. If I like one part, but not the other, do I vote keep or kill? Neither. I vote SPAM! --Steakfish 02:49, 7 October 2007 (BST)
  2. Spam - Xp for searching is game breaking.--Karekmaps?! 05:54, 8 October 2007 (BST)
  3. Spam - As above. -- John RubinT! ZG FER 09:58, 8 October 2007 (BST)
  4. Spam - As Steakfish. In addition this appears to be overpowered. The information we have would make these more powerful then generators for the purposes of searching, but that is dependent on HOW searching is done. When you hit "search" does it give you X% chance of finding an item THEN determine WHICH item is found? Or does the RNG make a search roll seperately for each item until something is found? Also, XP for searching is ridiculous.--Pesatyel 18:38, 8 October 2007 (BST)
