A bright yellow building in Germanic style, a much-loved landmark and a popular haunt for tourists and students alike.

History

The laboratory itself.

Founded in the mid-18th century, the Burrell Institute was dedicated to investigating the chemical and psychological effects of beverages, especially those of a frothy nature. From the start it enjoyed generous financial backing, and was soon the first educational establishment incorporated into Pegton College ('P.C.').

Its high-tech copper vats, extensive testing facilities and liberal attitude made its courses highly popular among P.C. students, for example the masters degree in Beverage Consumption and Intoxication Management. Many of its alumni went on to become world-class alcoholics, wife-batterers and vagabonds, adding to the unique flavour of life in northeast Pegton. Others were hastily inducted into the neighbouring hospital in order to participate in their first-rate organ donor programme by donating their kidneys, livers and brains for medical research.

The Class of 1875 celebrates the discovery of moonshine.

The tour of the fascinating Burrell Building was a highpoint of any visit to Pegton, and was usually scheduled as the final stop; visitors were rarely in a fit state to proceed any further, having sampled several dozen types of hop-, barley- and potato-based fortified beverages.

Many students could conduct research at once.

In post-outbreak times, the Burrell continues to be a place where one can see people staggering around in an uncoordinated fashion, barely conscious of their surroundings, and desperate to line their stomachs with something fatty, greasy and meaty, or get their teeth into something filling, in order to assuage the effects of the wine or beer they have imbibed.
