Description
Curton Mansion occupies four blocks in the Malton suburb of Chancelwood.
History
One of the oldest and wealthiest families in Malton, the Curton family made its fortune during the Industrial Revolution, providing iron and coal for virtually all of northern England. The progenitor of the family line, Mortimer Curton, was very secretive about his wealth. He invested huge amounts of money in governmental ventures, private industries, and even colonial endeavors.
Through the next several generations, the family grew, as did their wealth. Richard Curton, Mortimer's great-grandson, further advanced the family’s influence by getting elected Mayor of Chancelwood and serving for over 20 years. During this time, the family also purchased numerous parcels of land within the city, leasing the land to various businesses while gaininging political clout at the same time.
The Curton family has remained a fixture in Malton through two world wars. Despite sometimes chaotic financial markets, the family's fortune has increased steadily for over two hundred years. The most recent heir to the Curton fortune and occupant of Curton Mansion, Aleister Curton, was responsible for the construction and leasing of Curton Mall, one of Malton’s most successful retail locations. He was also a member of the board of directors of NecroTech.
Aleister had a great interest in the occult. He was rumoured to be involved in the study of certain mystical phenomena. He traveled extensively, visiting countless locations of esoteric and metaphysical significance. His collection of rare books and arcane objects was considered unparalleled. This prodigious library was not discovered after Aleister Curton's unexplained disappearance.
