Moved POV news

July 2009

July 31st

Clad in special special prophylactic gear, and rallying to the enigmatic battle cry "Fort 404: Barhah not found", a group of hardened sexual adventurers have recently arrived in Whittenside. These (mostly naked) madmen (and women) have been spotted in Fort Perryn erecting solid edifices and inserting unspeakable objects into some of Perryn's unwitting residents. A rather nasty game of strip-Twister has been going on at Perryn, particularly in the gatehouse, as a result. --WanYao 23:18, 31 July 2009 (BST)

You call that NPOV, WanYao? Sheesh. Someone who always edits other people's news for a slight POV towards human side should know better. Or are zombies excluded from this rule? -- Kittithaj 21:45, 11 September 2009 (BST)

Hellow Whittenside we are a new group in this area were here to help and give info to everyone out there. our name is Malton Zombie Free Radio (MZFR) We operate on (28.71 MHz) were not a big group there is only one of us but we will try to get bigger. Were going to set up in the The Sherwel Building (84,94) here is our site link Malton Zombie Free Radio —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Super Cheese101 (talkcontribs) 04:40, 11 May 2009 (BST).

Feral Undead Barricade Plan

Because zombies have barricade plans too. I can change it to Zombie barricade plan if anyone cares Necrodeus T M! 21:34, 6 August 2008 (BST)

Moved from the front page

June 11 Fort Perryn has been breached, zombies pouring through the gatehouse and are beginning to eradicate everything, many survivors dead/wounded and infected, advise getting the fuck out before it's to late. Better stock up on FAKs and ammo. Fort Perryn will fall within the next couple of hours, good luck to you all!--Seargent Block

[Moved from the News section on the front page]. POV and inaccurate. Right now, the gatehouse is barricaded to EHB, all resource buildings are powered and 'caded, and survivors outnumber zombies inside the fort more than 100:2. Break-ins are frequent, but are being quickly dealt with by the survivors inside. --Mad Dog Munro 16:22, 11 June 2008 (BST)

Events, Important Notices

As humans, we have a much harder time maintaining our human status than zombies do maintaining their own. The humans need to form larger groups and take back Whittenside. My group, Extractor Hacked (sorry, I didn't add a link to it) is holding out at the NT Hurst Building (again, sorry for the absence of the link). I urge most humans to free-run into this building and keep it at EHB. STOP THE RED, GO GREEN. --LetMeAtHim Italic text

Revive Points

Is Went Street still a revive point? If so, it needs spraying as such. Currently it's Headshot Central for twitchy trenchies. --Bob Fortune RR 11:25, 7 October 2007 (BST)

If no-one objects, I'm going to remove it from the list of revive points. --Pavluk A! E! 14:53, 7 October 2007 (BST)

Paradox

  • Paradox does not have a permanent home in Whittenside at this time, it does somewhere close by and sometimes we pass through. I don't have the time to edit the info without making a mess of it right now, sorry, maybe later. --Lustindarkness 22:51, 3 Jan 2006 (GMT)

Revive Points (old)

  • Are the revive points even working? -- angelamaria 00:50, 22 February 2006 (GMT)
  • To answer you, yes it is working, and apprantly the revive rate is so high, there is no standing zombies.:S Well done the WMC.

about the suburb description

i was just reaing over Whittenside's description and realized it hadent been updated in a good long while, hell two of the groups listed in the description aren't even active any more. any one feel up to rewriting it? -Bullgod 21:10, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

some thoughts...

the description is also neither NPOV nor even accurate!!

i suggest we come up with a backstory for the burb... and make sure to keep the "history" and "current info" more neutral... i actually used this burb as an example in the wiki discussion of what a community description ought NOT to be like.

i was thinking something like...

"Located on the south western edge of Malton, Whittenside is a somewhat spartan neighborhood. Even before the outbreak, life in Whittenside revolved around the Fort Perryn army base, where most of its residents dewlt. The suburb -- as well as its neighbor to the west, Danversbank -- thus lacks some of the amenties and consumer conveniences most Maltonians took for granted such as a nearby mall, a variety of bars and clubs, museums, libraries, etc. Nor did it ever develop much in the way of local industry. This was never much of an issue for the soldiers who called Perryn their home."

and go from there....

we need to delete the whole bit on "this is a good place for survivors..." it is sooooo not true.

--WanYao 07:37, 20 July 2007 (BST)

Maybe not entirely neutral, but the suburbs resident zombie group and survivor groups have never argued about the description of the suburb. I agree it needs to be updated, and a backstory would be good. The NPOV template was uncalled for though, that template is most often used for edit wars that occur, putting it on this page when we have never argued here over what should be on the page is kinda wrong (IMO). If you want to develop a backstory and so on I suggest we discuss here and until we decide upon a good setup leave the old one as it is. - Whitehouse 19:13, 20 July 2007 (BST)
Further I suggest that the problem you noticed in the description is that at some point the news has been merged with the description as there is no backstory, if we fix a good backstory and remove the news that has been merged into it, we should have a rather neutral article (if people keep the news section NPOV). I am still annoyed that you would put up a NPOV template, rather than try to actually edit in a good NPOV description. Anyway, I like the description you have already given. And I am pretty sure we could use that one, if you feel your own description is worth it, then I suggest you put it up there. - Whitehouse 19:20, 20 July 2007 (BST)
I apologise for coming in and disrupting everything and P-ing people off. I intended the NPOV template to be a kind "red flag" about the description, which seemed to me to be quite inaccurate. Then I put my draft for a suburb backstory in here for consideration. I honestly felt that approach would be a little humbler and non-disruptive than just doing a major rewrite without consulting the people who've been in the game for a long time...
Personally, I am rather confused by the way NPOV is being argued and implimented in the game... This is a GAME, it's fictional, so the wiki is going to be *imitation* NPOV. That being said, I'd personally want the suburb descriptions to be pretty neutral and backstory-ish... Then there could be some descriptions of the post-quarantine, active groups, barricade policies, even summary of current political situation (e.g. burb is claimed by A group, but B and C are disputing it, etc. etc.) can and should all be included. That's not NPOV, it's history! :)
But where I get a little confused is the News section... People seem to want that to be NPOV, but I'm not sure how it can be... There will be individual reports and statements, and there might be "Press Release" type claims to victory, etc. etc. That stuff is always going to be POV, isn't it, no matter how "objective" the reporter may try to be.
IMO it just takes some thought when one is putting things together. And remember it's a GAME, not an encyclopedia. While the wiki should look and be as encyclopedic as possible, let's remember, this is a game tool, not an academic reference work.
--WanYao 23:49, 22 July 2007 (BST)
I'm with you on it just being a game. Some POV will always be present, that's just the way it is. And you were right about the description, and as you can see we rather liked yours. So yeah, some sections can be as NPOV as possible, while others must have some POV (news, as you mentioned). And don't worry, now that I have had a look at it I am no longer annoyed really. And if you can think of some good way of implementing the history into the description then go for it. Just watch out.. I am not the only one who is likely to get a bit shocked over change. But most people accept reason, so just let people know what, and why, and most likely they'll think it through and be happy with a good suggestion. - Whitehouse 16:05, 23 July 2007 (BST)

well i'm glad you liked it :) my character isn't in whittenside anymore, it's waaaay too hot there for a helpless little 1st level.
good luck! --WanYao 03:47, 25 July 2007 (BST)

FU victory right, I was advised by a certain wiki member to post my views and facts here. so...

views: the FU have won. the suburb is destroyed. AFP and all those trying to defend the fort are a bunch of idiots. there, thats my view. anyway, I made a description of whittneside which is as neutral as possible. I don't think you'll find any problems.

facts: southeast and southwest of whittneside are wide open, in each corner only two buildings are still standing. As for the fort, people are feeding themselves to the undead everyday. as for the north west, the small strip surrounded with the police dept is under survivour control but the rest of the northwest is not. the north east is also dead. needless to say, the center is also dead despite a few attempts at reclamining it, due to a really large zombie concentration. The man 20:01, 20 July 2007 (BST)

Here's an example of what I was talking about with News... this is important news... "Feral Undead claim victory in Whittenside! Details at 11.... ;)" That's newsworthy and should be posted there, IMO. It doesn't belong in the Suburb description, but it does belong in the News.
My 2 bits worth... I'm not trying to cause spit or arguements, just trying to have a discussion. --WanYao 23:49, 22 July 2007 (BST)
WanYao, the man tends to be quite pessimistic about anything the zeds do. Whit is so volatile that it's pretty much impossible for either group to win. Trenchies want the fort, zeds go to kill the trenchies, and other survivors try to retake Whit. It travels in cycles as soon enough the Zeds come out of the fort, having eaten the trenchies, and we get a seige in Whit. Then trenchies do some combat-reviving and we end up with a load of angry suicidal Feral survivors. Who kill everyone. And then kill themselves. And people who want to be alive drift out of Whit to get a revive. And the cycle is reborn. -- Wst50 20:37, 8 October 2008 (BST)

What's the frequency, Kenneth?

Does Whittenside have a dedicated radio frequency? If so, would someone please add it to the page?

Yes it has, 26.20 MHz. It is clearly visible on the radio page, which is linked from the main page.

Fall of Fort Perryn

The whole fort seems dead with zeds surrounding the area...blood is everywhere. Even though I am dead and a zombie....Im still going to help the survivors. The fort wouldnt have fallen if those bastards didnt over cade the armoury when we needed it most. Nightmare General

"Victory is Ours!" Barhah! It was a mighty battle from both sides! An exciting time for all. But in the end, the fort would have fallen no matter if the armoury was overcaded or not. By that point it was inevitable. You just didn't know it. FireChick (Feral Undead)

16:17, 19 December 2007 (PST)

I moved non-neutral items to discussion page. FireChick is right, as it is a glaring imbalance to the game.... once a zed horde targets something.... it is going down. The survivors must overwelhem the zombie horde to keep them in check, but never can "win"... and even then it just slows the zombie horde. This is a ZOMBIE game. =) Wenin 12:22, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

yeah thats the gist of it. the only reason why we cant actually beat you guys permanently into the ground is because you do out number us, and we can only form so many large hordes, we could never kill all of you at once. hell, the first mall tour didnt even come close. still i gotta say these new forts are impressive, i mean we have cracked it a few times before but this time there were just to many people in there, before yahoomas this place would fall all the time, but now its to packed for any fewer than 100 of us zeds to be able to get in and clean it out. keeping it human free is a far simpler task. of course your all welcomed to come back to our reclaimed zombie citadel and offer your flesh to us any time you wish, the Feral Undead will always be here, long live Fort Feral. --Bullgod 15:32, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

nomination for noteworthy status

Most of you probably wouldn't have noticed but yesterday i nominated Whittenside for noteworthy status. There's been just as much important stuff happening here for the past two years as all those other "noteworthy" suburbs, so i figured it was about time we got in on it.

http://wiki.urbandead.com/index.php/Talk:Suburb#Whittenside

that was not POV Funt

Funt i am sorry for my failure to sign my post but i was under the impression that once the fort fell to zeds it was renamed fort feral until retaken. please, if something about my post irritates you, change it. i won't mind.--Doctorgun 07:35, 10 October 2008 (BST)

Whittenside a Ghost Town

I would just like to announce a great achievement. Whittenside is now a ghost town. The heart of Whittenwoods is on its way to being restored to its natural, pre-Harman stage. Here is looking to the day when all Malton follows suit. - Uncle Chuckles 08:45, 5 December 2008 (MST)

Great Suburb Group Massacre 2010

All suburb wiki pages are undergoing a clean up to remove inactive groups from the group listing (see here: this suburb's groups). If you are a group currently listed in this suburb, you will be contacted on your group's talk page within the next few days and asked to reply, indicating that you are active in this suburb. Groups that fail to reply within two weeks of being contacted will automatically be removed from the suburbs where they are listed.

We're posting here in the hopes that more groups will be aware of the clean up and can respond appropriately, since our team does not have the time nor the manpower to seek out every group in-game or track down its group members elsewhere on the wiki. If you know that some groups in your suburb do not check the wiki, please be a good neighbor and let them know that they NEED to check it for this, or else they will be unlisted in the near future.

The wiki members coordinating the cleanup will be using the table below to track their progress in communicating with the various groups. Please do not edit it if you are not involved with The Great Suburb Group Massacre 2010 team.

Whittenside suburb page is someone's personal sandbox now?

What is Dr Schwan's spam doing on a suburb page? I thought the usual & customary was to list groups in the group section and have group info on their own page. From what I can see, Dr Schwan isn't even a set of groups or a single group, it's one person. I suggest it's time for a cleanup. --Grogh 02:03, 28 March 2010 (BST)

I removed the entire "The Colglough Building Whittenside's Heart" section from the places to see. It was heavily POV, nothing useful or making it worthy to see and overall a user plug. The building itself being on there (like the first paragraph) was okay, but is much more appropriate to the building page itself (where one can find a paragraph that says basically the same anyway). It could be put back and be okay, but it honestly could be shortened to better fit a places to see type section. The thing on the fort is fine but it too could be redone in a similar fashion. If the original author would like to retain what was there and out it on another page he should be able to grab it from the history, I also made a notepad with it as well. -- Papa Jadkor (RRF) (MotA) (MT11) 02:22, 28 March 2010 (BST)

I felt that I should respond to this thread as I was the user who edited the page. I respect the decision to take it down though it has been some time, I am unclear what might have been on there that was too POV but it was one of my first edits so it is entirely possible. These days I usually create new pages and link them to existing ones instead of working in lengthy edits. My intention with that edit and the one about the fort was innocent. I was intending to provide Whittenside with some flavor text as I have seen in Dulston and other places. The catch is that in order to list something as a site to see while there, there should be something at the site worth seeing. The Whittenside’s heart comment was based on a passage in the building description that mentioned the importance of the building in the layout of Whittenside. In actuality, the references to me in the edit were intended to direct users interested in roleplaying to the building. For the record, there is a user page, a group page, and two fiction pages based around this character concept and the location as a hub for roleplaying activity in Whittenside. The post in question predated these pages and is therefore no longer needed in its entirety though I would still like to see some reference to the building within the suburb page as an attraction linked to the aforementioned. --Albert Schwan Albert Schwan  05:13, 28 March 2010 (BST)
I have no problem with you putting something about the building back on there, and I agree having some info to spice things up. The main issue with the original was the role-play. It is great for other pages, and I admire all the work you put into it, but it was too focused on you to be considered NPOV/Suburb page material. If you could find a bit more of a subtle way to advertise it's RP value on the Suburb page it shouldn't be an issue, the original was just too much for that particular page. You should also check out promoting it on some of the forums to help get better exposure as well. And try to keep the descriptions on the Suburb page short and sweet, too much and people may just skip over it entirely. It should also draw them to the building's main page which can have the bulk of the details. I'd also like to sincerely apologize if I came off as a jerk in my original post. -- Papa Jadkor (RRF) (MotA) (MT11) 05:51, 28 March 2010 (BST)
Not to worry, no offense taken. I will work on something a bit more subtle. Does anyone know of any other notable features to Whittenside? I would be happy to work on the write-up but besides Colglough and the fort, I have not seen much going on in the suburb. Perhaps, seeing as zombies have recently overrun it, there may be room for a writ-up on Whittenwood. I would be ill equiped to write such a thing but I think it would be of value to the page.--Albert Schwan Albert Schwan  06:49, 28 March 2010 (BST)

Proposed edit

Last time I edited the suburb page, my edit was deemed too long and not in appropriate POV. This time I thought I would post here first and ask if there are objections. My proposed edit can be found here and contains flavor text for Anne, Colglough, and Sherwel. If anyone would like to suggest a change, please let me know.--Albert Schwan Albert Schwan  07:01, 9 April 2010 (BST)

As those are building-specific entries, those texts would fit better to the respective building pages than to the general suburb page. A suburb page itself should only contain longer texts on buildings if they are especially noteworthy and unique, such as Caiger Mall with its long history of important sieges. --Spiderzed 13:52, 9 April 2010 (BST)
My intent is to create an entry for the central part of Whittenside that can be added to the "what to see in Whittenside" section. The goal of which would be to let visitors know that there is more to this suburb than the fort. The center of town does have a history of sieges and bloody massacres as the clumping of valuable buildings in obvious locations is particular to this suburb. I am attempting to work on brevity, but for a suburb page, what constitutes longer text?--Albert Schwan Albert Schwan  21:27, 9 April 2010 (BST)
As an alternate solution to be on the safe side, you might create a subpage with some brief texts on less notable buildings and link to it from the suburb page, similar to Guides:Eastonwood Tourist's Guide. But don't be too quick with any survivor-centric tourist guides for now - as FU has reclaimed the burb again and has held it now comfortably for two weeks, there are plans to adjust the burb description to reflect the current state. (Which, frankly, has been the default state of Whittenside since the first spring picnic in 2006.) --Spiderzed 21:48, 9 April 2010 (BST)
