Description

The Featherstone Library is an old library located in the suburb of Pescodside. The library, which opened with a solemn ceremony on May 15, 1976, commemorates Donald Featherstone (born 1918), a British author of books on wargaming and military history. Featherstone wrote classic texts on wargaming in the 1960s and 1970s. Originally a physiotherapist, he was introduced to miniatures wargaming by Tony Bath in 1955. In 1960 the two of them began editing the UK version of the "War Game Digest", a seminal wargaming newsletter started by Jack Scruby, but later Featherstone started his own periodical in 1962 called the "Wargamers' Newsletter". However, Featherstone's greatest contribution were his books: hardcover collections of rules for the recreational wargamer, culminating in his encyclopedic War Games through the Ages series. Featherstone continued to write in the 1990s, switching to works on military history.

To those who thought the commemoration an odd event need only consider the fact that Malton had erected several libraries in recent years and was sorely running out of candidates after which to name them. Of course a donation of $3.5 million from a wealthy, but anonymous, military history enthusiast may have played no small part in this particular library's name.

The library was designed by Horace Trumbauer & Associates, the architect of the renowned Lynnewood Hall. The Associate responsible for designing the Featherstone Library was the chief designer of the firm, architect Julian F. Abele, the first major African American architect.

From approximately 1992-2002, the Featherstone Library underwent a comprehensive renovation costing $1.2 million that included: adding fire suppression systems, remodeling the stacks, and new public spaces. According to a Pescodside legend, under the terms of the anonymous donation, the exterior of the library is never to be altered, or else ownership of the building reverts to the Featherstone family. Because of this, according to the legend, Pescodside city councilors have been limited and creative in their renovation options over the years, and as such, the library is more modern on the interior than on the exterior.

After the "Malton Incident" the library became the base of operations for the Friends of the Featherstone Library, a war game enthusiasts group that took the defense of Malton very seriously. They live in the library in order to pay tribute to Donald Featherstone and all he has achieved for wargamers everywhere.

Noted NecroTech scientist, Caleb Usher, visited the library on one occasion, but was turned away with his library card revoked. When questioned Caleb replied, "Apparently I never returned a copy of 'Kaplan AP Biology' that I checked out 5 years ago for my class in Biology 101. Still they were firm, but fair."

The Friends of the Featherstone Library later contended they knew nothing about this incident as their sole focus was on war gaming and not the enforcement of library book return policy. To this day no one knows who revoked Caleb's library card...

Mandate

None, it's just a library. Go read a book! Preferably by Donald Featherstone!

Affiliates

Any survivors seeking shelter in the library would in fact be under the care and watchful gaze of the Friends of the Featherstone Library group. As such, survivors are asked to refer to this group in order to determine any current partnerships or joint action plans being staged from the library pertaining to the defense of Pescodside. At this time that infers that the library is associated with the Dulston Alliance.

In should also be mentioned that due to past actions the Inman Building, while being a NecroTech facility, commonly holds mutually beneficial relations with the Friends of the Featherstone Library due to their combined efforts in reducing the zombie population found in the surrounding area.

Barricade Policy

Presently, the library doors should be un-barricaded and wide open to enable ease of access and integration for all members of the community. At this time, there is no assistance available for differently-abled citizens, and library staff are under investigation by Malton's Constabulary for allegations of discrimination.

Scentoral Imaging Location

This block has been chosen as a location for scentoral imaging by harman conservationists who use it to maintain a full migratory map of zombie movements throughout Malton. damage-resistant, zombah-friendly keypads have been installed for the uploading of data.
