Suggestion description
Although I realise that many of the melee weapons are new and therefore have not had time to become modified to provide individual nuances, as a fencer I'm not satisfied with the current functioning of the fencing foil.

First of all, a common fencing foil is a piece of sports equipment, and therefore blunt and soft and next to useless against humans or zombies. You'd have a hard time doing as much damage as a cricket or baseball bat.

Secondly, a foil with the tip broken off would be a lot stiffer, and if you sharpened the end it would start to resemble the formidable sword from which it is descended. A person with fencing skill could make mince meat out of an opponent in very little time indeed, as long as the opponent didn't have any guns. However I'm not sure it would be very useful against zombies, as you can only use it to stab, not cut, and you can't sharpen the edge even if you tried because it has a square cross-section. And stabbing a zombie won't achieve much, as you need to chop it to bits or pulverise it.

So what I'm proposing is this: make the foil do different amounts of damage to zombies or survivors. Against zombies, keep it weak, but against survivors the damage should be increased considerably as stabbing a regular human is extremely dangerous. Also, introduce a "fencing skill" that brings the hit rate up to that of knives with "knife combat".

So perhaps allow foils to have the same hit rates as knives (corresponding with the appropriate skills), and to do 2HP damage to zombies and 3 or 4HP damage to survivors (about the same as axes or bullets, which is realistic). Also, the "fencing skill" might require 200XP to acquire, since it's quite hard to learn (and since it doesn't really make that much difference to the game, it doesn't matter if you get it last).

This would realistically have almost zero effect on the game, but it would make it more interesting and provide another skill for us 40+ level players to use our XP on.

Keep Votes

  1. Keep - Author Vote - hey I know this suggestion is dying but I'll amend it based on feedback and resubmit later. Kothos 02:52, 18 May 2007 (BST)
  2. Change - I have a suggestion. I read in the Zombie Survival guide that there was an instance in a which someone using a fencing sword (and expert fencing skill) was able to piece a zombie's eye socket and destroy the brain by twirling the blade. You could change your skill to reduce (or remove) the PK attributes, and add a bonus for those with the skill against zombies (5% maybe) to pierce the eye socket and destroy the brain, creating an instant kill. -Zed Ed 23:16, 31 May 2007 (BST)

Kill Votes

  1. Kill - Just say no to skills and equpiment which only benefits PK'ers. - BzAli 16:26, 17 May 2007 (BST)
    • Re - Okay I forgot about PKers, I'll have to think of a way to nullify that benefit. Kothos 02:52, 18 May 2007 (BST)
  2. Kill - PK buffs are okay, as long as they also benefit non-PKers, which this one doesn't. --Anotherpongo 18:45, 17 May 2007 (BST)
  3. Kill/Change - Arrgh, you had me until the 3-4 damage. Implementing this with a 50% hit rate and 3-4 damage nerfs the fire axe, the knife, the zombie claw, and the zombie bite. --Hhal 18:50, 17 May 2007 (BST)
    • Re - What would be a better damage rate? Kothos 02:52, 18 May 2007 (BST)
      • Re - I figure around 1 damage would be just right. That way, it's better for combat than the fist, but is still useless against strong enemies. --Hhal 16:01, 18 May 2007 (BST)
  4. Kill - Skill which benefits PKers exclusively. Plus, fencing is not good flavor. It doesn't fit. Not everyone's hobbies do. Just so happens that I juggle geese for fun, but I'm not clamoring for geese to be introduced for me to juggle in game. --Rgon 19:20, 17 May 2007 (BST)
    • Re - On the other hand, you forget to mention that geese don't feature as weapons in the game, but foils do... Kothos 02:52, 18 May 2007 (BST)
      • Re - Fair enough, but they are found alongside ski poles and tennis rackets. These items are more for novelty than as serious weapons. --Rgon 16:59, 18 May 2007 (BST)
  5. Kill/Change - I like the idea of a fencing skill and a more dangerous sword, but at the same time I am concerned that this might put survivor melee prowess on par with that of the zombies, which would unbalance the game. Nevertheless, I think you should explore this a little further. --Tarumigan 2:35, 17 May 2007 (BST)
  6. Kill - Kill just because I want the Foil to be more effective against Zombies, not humans. All that you said has truth and merit to it, but I've been waiting to kill a Zombie with a sword for as long as I've been playing UD. Sorry. -- dǝǝɥs ɯɐds: sʎɐʍ1ɐ! 23:47, 17 May 2007 (BST)
    • Re - Fair enough, but for a chopping weapon Kevan would have to introduce a sabre or katana (or scimitar or cutlass or whatever, but sabres and katanas continue to exist in many households or stores and the rest don't). I'll rewrite this suggestion and try to include those weapons. Kothos 02:52, 18 May 2007 (BST)
  7. Kill - No PKers weapons please. And about damage being diferent to zombies and survivors when attacked by different weapons, to implement this would have to include a lot of changes that would make the game depart from the simple format it has right now, and I don't like that. --Matthew Fahrenheit YRCT+1 04:06, 18 May 2007 (BST)
  8. Kill - This just gives Pkers another reason to kill survivors. --Sonofagun18 06:15, 18 May 2007 (BST)
  9. Kill - Sorry, but what everyone else is saying is right - there is not point to this as it benefits PKers more than anyone else... --Ducis DuxSlothTalk 10:22, 18 May 2007 (BST)
  10. Well. They said it all. --•▬ ▬••▬ • •••• •▬ ▬•▬• ▬•▬ #nerftemplatedsigs 13:12, 18 May 2007 (BST)
  11. Kill -It's a well argued skill that would introduce more realism into the game. Unfortunately realism is in a game is secondary to game mechanics. And as argued out, the game mechanics have some bugs in them.--Vista +1 17:41, 18 May 2007 (BST)
  12. Kill Swords = Cool, PK'er = Not Cool StarDolphin 23:14, 18 May 2007 (BST)
  13. Kill - I don't want to die from a PK because of the fencing foil. Just like other people said, realism isn't a major concept in this game. --JudeMaverick W!TJ! 01:38, 19 May 2007 (BST)
  14. Stab - Don't encourage fools (PKer or otherwise) to run about flailing swords. I'd rather Mace someone then use a stupid fencing thing/blade.--Lachryma 02:23, 19 May 2007 (BST)
  15. Change - I like the concept. Maybe if you made it easier to hit zombies with one at reduced damage (as it really doesnt hurt them much, but since they are "slow zombies", they don't move around or fight back as much while your poking them), and made it harder to hit survivors at increased damage (since it's a safe assumption they will try to stop you from ruining their shit with your sword, but definately would get hurt more when it hit), I would give a keep. Maybe make it more accurate than an axe but less damaging, and less accurate than an axe but slightly more damaging, respectivly? Or you know, save yourself the effort and just forget it.--Priz 21:46, 23 May 2007 (BST)
