20070726 Your target is already dead.

Suggestion type
interface improvement

Suggestion scope
attacks on zombies or survivors that can't be carried out because the target is a corpse

Suggestion description
When several people attack one target with a "death blow" attack, it often happens that most of them will get the message "Your target has moved away." That's a bit confusing- it leads you to think the target escaped, rather than being killed by another player.
True, if another player killed the target, you should see a report saying so- but we all know that in many situation, that is not what actually happens.

My suggestion is that when your attack fails because the target "moved away", the server should check and see if there is a corpse in your location who'd ID# matches that of your target. If this is in fact the case, you should get a report saying "Your target is already dead" rather than "The target has moved away."
This would help reduce the potential for confusion. It would still be possible in rare cases to get a report of somebody else killing your target and then get the "moved away" message, but it would happen only very rarely. And when you did NOT get the kill report, you'd at least get this as a "back up", most times.

Plus, its just better flavor. Who would see the target of their lethal wrath get killed and think "gee, he moved away..." ?

Keep Votes

  1. Keep - I had a quick look, but I couldn't see this as a dupe anywhere. Even though I'm sure I've read it before. Or was it on the bugs page? The "Your target moved away.." message appears if you try to attack someone on your contacts list who is a dead body. That needs fixed too. Either you can't attack them at all, or the message should be corrected! 'arm. 02:24, 26 July 2007 (BST)
  2. Keep - Definitely needs to be added. I was involved in a... Thing and thought that two people whom I'd killed had escaped. They hadn't (a colleague's iWitness records proved that). --The Hierophant 02:35, 26 July 2007 (BST)
  3. Keep - Always run into this problem during large attacks.--Insomniac By Choice 02:44, 26 July 2007 (BST)

  6. Keep I like it. --Secruss 03:51, 26 July 2007 (BST)
  7. Keep - Insomniac By Choice actually brought the issue to my attention (again), and I did figue there would be a suggestion like this already in peer reviewed, but it seems not. Likely it was an informal request on the bug fix page, in which case I'm just making it formal. . . . swiers BigEYEwitnessLOGO.png 03:56, 26 July 2007 (BST)
  8. Keep "Your target moves away." Did he roll on the ground or something? Glenstone 04:29, 26 July 2007 (BST)
  9. Keep It does this? I've always wondered why people "move away" so much when im about to get my 10xp... clarification = good--Wooty 05:14, 26 July 2007 (BST)
  10. Keep - In some cases this causes the dying text not to appear too, which causes problems.--Karekmaps?! 06:18, 26 July 2007 (BST)
  11. Keep - So that's why they dissapear and apparently move away? I wasted a good 10-20AP hunting down some bugger who was on 3HP when he "moved away"--Seventythree 07:56, 26 July 2007 (BST)
  12. keep - good --Duke GarlandTLCD SSZ 09:49, 26 July 2007 (BST)
