20080702 Zerg Flag Alert

Jon Pyre 15:31, 2 July 2008 (BST)

Suggestion type
Improvement

Suggestion scope
Characters that move too close to another

Suggestion description
I started a new character in Monroeville and appeared in Newtown, where I have another character as well. Malton makes it easy to avoid your alts, simply stay in a different suburb. The irregularly shaped and sized areas of Monroeville aren't so easy. It's possible for two characters to be in the same area but be very far apart.

The problem with letting people know they're tripping a zerg flag is that it gives zergers an idea of how large the zerg zone is, allowing them to keep their characters as close as possible. That would be counterproductive.

I suggest rather than giving a big obvious alert message (YOUR CHARACTERS ARE TOO CLOSE TOGETHER. PLEASE DISPERSE THEM) instead when you have two characters that are too close you can randomly receive a subtle message like "This area seems oddly familiar."

When I say randomly I mean that it shouldn't trip the second you become too close. Instead it should just be an infrequent message that can randomly pop up while your character has an active zerg flag.

This would prevent zergers from knowing the minimum allowable distance since it wouldn't alert them the second they get too close. But it would give honest players that accidentally move their alts too close an infrequent warning/suggestion that they need to relocate.

Keep Votes

  1. Keep - I'm tired of people saying "I didnt know". Keep. -doc crook 20:33, 2 July 2008 (BST)
  2. Keep - Yeah, you got my vote. BillyClubThorton makes a really good argument, but zergers aren't criminals. As it is right now, the rules state that a zerger is someone with two or more characters in a suburb. A person with alts has multiple characters all around Malton. The difference between the two is that a person with alts is being decent while a zerger knows the rules. I prefer that the game rewards (or at least doesn't punish) the people who don't know rather than penalize everyone who breaks the rules. In any other time, I'd vote kill just because we don't need it, but we do. --Vandurn 00:06, 3 July 2008 (BST)
  3. Keep - I've never been affected by this but I believe this is a good idea that will be helpful to many people - Zig13 - 3/07/2008 at 09:36(BST)
  4. Keep -HA ha ha! Oh God! "This area seems oddly familiar." LOL! :p Just for that you get another keep.--Jamie Cantwel3 TalkAll glory to the Hypnotoad! 08:22, 7 July 2008 (BST)
  5. Keep - I like the way you keep from cheating they system, but still alerting them. --BoboTalkClown 01:19, 10 July 2008 (BST)
  6. Keep - I have many characters and am constantly troubled by how far apart to keep them. I think the chance should be pretty dang high though, I wouldn't want to be 5 squares in when I realize that I've somewhere breached the radius.-- Techercizer (Food) (TSoE) 07:23, 12 July 2008 (BST)
  7. keep zerging sucks, and the current system is easily abusable.--Disc10 20:54, 14 July 2008 (BST)

Kill Votes

  1. Is it REALLY that hard to pay attention to where your characters are at? Your most likely going to be playing all of them in that "session" anyway.--Pesatyel 18:20, 2 July 2008 (BST)
  2. Kill - I understand where you are going with this suggestion, but I don't like it. 2 Reasons: 1)Under the current system, when a zerger trips the flag, his search/hit rates drop dramatically. Telling someone that they tripped the zerg flag will allow potential zergers know EXACTLY how much they can get away with. 2)As said before, is it really that hard to tell when you are zerging or not?  Billy Club Thorton  T!  RR  19:30, 2 July 2008 (BST)
    • Re That's why I suggest randomizing it. You don't receive a zerg flag as soon as you're too close. It just becomes a random message that you can receive at any point. That way people who stray close accidentally will be warned eventually, but zergers won't get a fix on the exact minimum allowable distance.
Trial and error. An user knows when they zerg, even if it is randomized, it would be pretty simple to determine simply by trial and error. Eg: A zerger moves his two characters within X spaces and begins to perform an action. After Y actions, he receives no flag, so he moves his character X-1 and repeats until he gets a flag. Get it?  Billy Club Thorton  T!  RR  19:23, 10 July 2008 (BST)
  3. Kevan never released too much details on Zerging in Monroeville. We pretty much have no clue if zerging in Monroeville works the same way as zerging in Malton! --•▬ ▬••▬ • •••• •▬ ▬•▬• ▬•▬ #nerftemplatedsigs 21:16, 2 July 2008 (BST)
  4. Kill - as above --Sir Bob Fortune RR 21:53, 2 July 2008 (BST)
  5. Who cares? - Kevan's clearly got his own stuff going on regarding zergers, I doubt he'd look hard at this even if it passed peer review.--Jiangyingzi 23:39, 2 July 2008 (BST)
  6. Kill - Easy enough to keep track of multiple characters' locations. --ZsL 00:57, 3 July 2008 (BST)
  7. Kill - Regardless of this change, people would still ignore it if they intend to zerg. and the honest ones that would abide by it are under the expectation to be aware of their actions anyway. Furthermore, the best prevention of zerging is the ambiguity Kevan has regarding what is zerging, and what is against the laws of the game, so many people are encouraged to stay away from the concept of zerging outright. Creating clear cut definitions of where the trip flag is may encourage exploitations. DanceDanceRevolution 01:15, 3 July 2008 (BST)
  8. Kill - as DDR -- boxy talki 04:11 3 July 2008 (BST)
  9. Kill - It's not that hard to keep them apart. And, if they do come close... well... that's allowed, technically, because sometimes shit happens -- just move em fast. Basically, Kevan needs to find a way to crack down on proxy-abusing zergers and delete their accounts. Nothing more, nothing less. --WanYao 10:06, 3 July 2008 (BST)
  10. kill - theres amap on the wiki...use it!--Irounds 02:12, 14 July 2008 (BST)

Spam/Dupe Votes

  1. pointless Its a big map so its hardly going to be difficult to keep em seperated is it? I mean i accidentally ended up with 3 very close together but only cos i never check the maps for Malton and 2 of them were standing up from headshot forced idle... just pay attention and shift them in oppsite directions as soon as you spot the problem!--Honestmistake 17:28, 2 July 2008 (BST)
  2. Dupe - Been suggested before, revealing the range of the zerg flag is a very very bad thing, even if it's only in spurts.--Karekmaps?! 07:36, 3 July 2008 (BST)
  3. dupe - i concur with karek --Scotw 22:21, 4 July 2008 (BST)
  4. ban zerging fucks as soon as they activate the first flag. --  14:39, 6 July 2008 (BST)
