History
M.E.R.C.Y., the Malton Education and Recreation Center for Youth, had its beginnings in the 1950’s, when several influential women of the St. John’s congregation in Vinetown, believing that children who roamed the streets should have a positive alternative, organized the beginnings of the program. Working in conjunction with the Church, area schools and other educational institutions, the Center was originally based out of St. John's Cathedral. It grew over the years, and using a model similar to other youth organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club of America, the Center served children from ages 6 through 18 and their families through membership and community outreach in a variety of programs. While not directly affiliated with the Religious Order of the Sisters of Mercy, M.E.R.C.Y. also chose the 'Mercy Shield'as its emblem for similar reasons. Radio Frequency
M.E.R.C.Y. has no dedicated frequency of its own. Instead members of the organization monitor and make occasional use of the Mitchem Mall frequency at 26.34 MHz, as it is used by many of Vinetown's citizens.
