Thanks!

Thanks for the welcome Bob, I actually played UD a while back and me and my friends are just getting back into it. We're thinking about scoping out Fort Creedy and working on it slowly but surely. We're not sure if we'll base ourselves out of Pegton or Edgecombe but I figured I have AP so I'd update the Danger Map as much as possible while I'm at it. AsukaUnit-02 Pilot 19:56, 4 January 2019 (UTC)

Sure thing! Creedy can be a dangerous place, so be prepared for a fight. But I'm sure you know that! Bob Moncrief EBDW! 21:55, 4 January 2019 (UTC)

Still on the hunt. I've mostly been surveying safe/intact suburbs, but might end up in part of the DMZ soon, which has been occupied by the Dead for months. Will keep you posted. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 03:47, 15 January 2019 (UTC)

Suburb Groups

Hey Bob. I noticed you reverted the changes I made to the group listings in some of the suburbs I frequent due to me not being a member of said groups. How are we supposed to keep that section up to date in light of the fact there hasn't been an accounting of active and inactive groups on the wiki since 2013? Thanks -JAZED (talk) 20:48, 22 January 2019 (UTC)

I would suggest asking said groups on their talk page and if they don't reply in a few weeks, I wouldn't have a problem taking them off. DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION 22:31, 22 January 2019 (UTC)
Hi Jazed! The short answer is to second what DDR said above — a group in question needs to be clearly inactive, not just visible in-game, to be de-listed. If the group puts an inactivity template on their page, then it's fine to de-list them; otherwise, you should leave a message on their talk page specifically regarding their listings, and if they fail to respond in, I'd say a month, you can remove the listings.
The longer answer is that the original impetus for the existence of the GSGMs wasn't how out-of-date group listings were, but because the listings on each suburb page were becoming untenably long. That's definitely not the case on the current lists. The goal of having an up-to-date set of listings has always been secondary, but, that being said, we are definitely overdue for another GSGM. Are you interested in helping out? Please leave your signature here and we'll let you know when we get started. if you feel it's a major problem please make sure to get involved, and get those you know involved, in the GSGM. Seeing more volunteers listed there would definitely give the Massacre a kick in the pants. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 22:41, 22 January 2019 (UTC)

active places

Apparently we are at war?

I'm only back to the game since a few weeks, and wasn't aware RR was even active anymore. All but one of my old contacts have their names crossed out. I saw one other member at my old NT building, but it otherwise seemed to be operating on the strength of tradition. Kind of makes sense because honestly what was the point? Well I left out of boredom, and I'm up in Houldenbank tagging along with some folks who like to repair phone masts, and I run into this joker.

MichaeI Jacks0n id=1564806

Half a decade seems an awfully long time to hold a grudge against a mostly inactive group. The Greatorex clinic is powered but barricaded, and I see no indication of anyone trying to bring it back. Their group page hasn't been updated in 4 years. Was this person even a member, or do you think he was just looking to start trouble in the suburb? What the hell are they even using for a PKer database anymore?

. . . einexile (talk) 17:57, 9 February 2019 (UTC)

Wow! Haven't heard of RR=PR being active in ages. That said, I've never run a survivor in the southeast. It's possible Michael is maintaining a personal bounty list — the most recently-active major bounty board was on NecroConnect, which is still up but hasn't been updated in at least a year. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 05:06, 10 February 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the response and info. I haven't used the wiki in a long time and forgot how to check. I left some graffiti in Houldenbank declaring RR defunct, which I rather thought it was at the time, and it's certainly defunct in Houldenbank. I wouldn't have left except I didn't want to get the people with me killed. I'll be damned if I'm removing the group tag though. I was thinking of going back to the Mad Craskers but not now! . . . einexile (talk) 19:01, 22 February 2019 (UTC)

Grateful

Thank you for the greeting, Mr. Moncrief. There's a lot to learn in Malton and I really appreciate having someone I can ask for a word of advice.

I do have one question: I've noticed some people have a really nice little page set up for their character and I was wondering if there was a link that perhaps had a template for making up such a page. It would be nice if it had instructions or recipes for making those jolly little -?buttons? I don't know the real name- rectangular boxes that have a few words explaining the owner believes in this or that policy or supports a particular group. Do you know the little label-thingees I mean?

Once again, thank you for your kind greeting. Malton can be a bit intimidating!--Catherine Cushing (talk) 04:43, 19 February 2019 (UTC)

My signature is not right

Hi, please excuse a sort of dopey question, but I just noticed that my signature has the word "Talk" in parentheses behind my main character's username. What did I do to make that happen? Other people rarely seem to have that; it's usually just their usernames. I'm not sure how to alter it to plain "Catherine Cushing". Would you happen to have a link about fixing this, or...(should I stop thinking about this)? Thanks for your time.--Catherine Cushing (talk) 10:08, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

I know I'm not Bob, but I'm going to answer anyway :P All generic signatures will have it looking like yours, so it's nothing you've done. You can create an alternate one if you like, which changes the way your signature appears. If you want to do that, and need a hand, we're more than happy to help :) stelar Talk|MCM|EBD|Scourge 11:04, 27 February 2019 (UTC)
Yep! The default appearance is "Username (talk)", where "talk" links to your talk page. On my custom signature, for example, the word "Moncrief" links to my talk page instead. The basic instructions on how to change your signature are here — but as Stelar said, if you have any questions, just let us know! Bob Moncrief EBDW! 12:21, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

Recruitment Page Problems

Dear Bob,

Something seems very off at the Recruitment page. At first I thought it was me making a typo somewhere adn then I tried to fix it....even going so far as to script the Zerger's recruitment page, but now it seems I made it worse!

Would you be so kind as to look what went wrong and perhaps fix it? I promise I will stay away from other people's pages in the next 12 years! Boertje (talk) 11:26, 4 March 2019 (UTC)

Hi! I believe I've fixed it. Does it look correct to you now? Bob Moncrief EBDW! 11:28, 4 March 2019 (UTC)

Revive Tool Confusion

Hello, Bob. One of my characters ("Constance Claremont") is still on the DEM Revivification Tool request list thingee (http://tiny.cc/reviv). She got a revive a week ago. Was I supposed to edit her off the list? (And leave a thank-you note lower down the page?) I'm confused by this. Where exactly do I go to do this? There's no "editing" tab. Do you know of a link I should read or...? Thank you for your time. Catherine Cushing (talk) 10:57, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

Yep! You just have to re-submit the request in the same form (with your UID# & location) and select "Revived!" in the drop-down menu under "Status". I've cleared out your entry using this method (sorry for the "Checking if this works" message!) Hope that helps! Bob Moncrief EBDW! 11:50, 7 March 2019 (UTC)
Thank you very much. Catherine Cushing (talk) 22:22, 9 March 2019 (UTC)

Any word about Easter?

Hi, Bob. Have you heard anything about whether there will be a supply crate drop for us this Easter? I found a crowbar, so I'm all ready to go. It sure would be great if there were. Thank you for your time. Catherine Cushing (talk) 08:42, 22 March 2019 (UTC)

Unless you have some insider info, I doubt it. The last supply crate drops were more than ten years ago, in 2009. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 11:44, 22 March 2019 (UTC)
Can confirm. Sys-ops and even bureaucrats receive no special advance notice of any changes or features to the game. Only very rarely on wiki-related business (the last time in 2014 when a wiki update corrupted text on wiki pages on a large scale), and even then this is generally publicly handled on the wiki. - As there hasn't been a crate drop in 9 years, don't hold your breath for the 10th year being the charm. -- Spiderzed 21:53, 22 March 2019 (UTC)
Well, that sure is disappointing news. Do we still get any Christmas trees and decorations? Or even just snow? Catherine Cushing (talk) 08:43, 23 March 2019 (UTC)
Christmas trees (plastic ones found in malls, real trees cut down in parks), Christmas lights and tinsel are all still available during December. No snow or fog anymore unfortunately. I think masks are also available around Halloween in certain corners of certain malls (or it might be all malls, I'm not sure). stelar Talk|MCM|EBD|Scourge 09:03, 23 March 2019 (UTC)

A gift! Oh my gosh!

Wow, that is exactly what I was trying to describe. All I had been able to find was columns of raw code. This looks to be so organized already, that even I could manage to construct my idea! Thank you, Bob. That is incredibly kind. Catherine Cushing (talk) 23:56, 24 March 2019 (UTC)

It worked like a charm. And I even spelled your name properly this time! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Catherine Cushing (talk) 00:52, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
Great! I had a few minutes between my daily AP-spending and going to work, so I thought I'd whip something together. Looks like you figured out all the parameters (border color, etc) right away. Let me know if there's something else I can help with! Bob Moncrief EBDW! 02:14, 25 March 2019 (UTC)

Don't see where I'm supposed to choose category

Hi, Bob. Sorry to bother you again, but I am confused by labeling the images I upload to the UD site. I feel badly that you always end up finishing up for me. I should know how to do this. I know I'm supposed to designate a category, but I'm not sure of all the possible choices (I mean, is there a set list someplace of the 20 possible designation labels, for example, something really concrete like that?) And besides choosing the best category to sort the image into, I don't understand where I'm supposed to post the label I choose - just in the "Descriptions" box? Sorry to be so thick. Thanks for your time. Catherine Cushing (talk) 19:36, 29 March 2019 (UTC)

Hi Catherine! All the highest-level subcategories can be seen in Category:Images; I generally just file the image into one of those, unless it's of a building/location in which case I try to add it to the relevant category in Category:Location Images.
When you upload a file, you can just type (where "ZZZ" is the relevant category name) in the description box.
That said, don't worry! Almost nobody, including longtime wiki users, successfully add categories to all (or any) images they upload. I think of adding the categories as part of my regular wiki maintenance activities. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 20:21, 29 March 2019 (UTC)
One quick follow-up note: it's important to put the category in double brackets, not just single — otherwise, the category won't link properly. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 02:08, 2 April 2019 (UTC)
Ah, nuts! I should have remembered the double-brackets. Sorry again, Bob. Maybe I'll get it right the next time. Catherine Cushing (talk) 05:52, 2 April 2019 (UTC)

What is the wiki protocol?

Hi, Bob. I am writing about the McMurtrie Building page. http://wiki.urbandead.com/index.php/The_McMurtrie_Building

What is the protocol for updating a common page like this? I haven't been able to find a reference to that procedure in the UD wiki. I'm terrified of doing a technical wiki-vandalism or some other offense out of ignorance.

I would like to correct a piece of inaccurate information. Specifically, in the fifth paragraph: "...with the building currently serving as the Black Ops HQ for the Souless Survivors."

They are now based out of Rhodenbank. While it doesn't mention the Souless [sic] Survivors on the Rhodenbank page (for some reason) there is a userbox for the Souless on their own page that mentions Rhodenbank specifically. http://wiki.urbandead.com/index.php/Souless_Survivors So, it should say: "...with the building formerly serving as the Black Ops HQ for Souless Survivors, now based in Rhodenbank."

(Appropos of nothing, it drives me nuts that they spelled "soulless" incorrectly.)

Thank you for your time. Catherine Cushing (talk) 00:53, 3 April 2019 (UTC)

Hi Catherine!
For location pages, you're totally welcome to make edits like the above, since they're intended to be updated by the community at large. The places to tread carefully are the group pages themselves — a group is considered to control its own group page, so any edits by outsiders there can be questionable. But location pages, you can edit freely. (The group members may come and undo the update, of course, but that means that they have some other information and may also update their group page to reflect it.)
So the edit you mentioned above should be a-ok! Bob Moncrief EBDW! 00:56, 3 April 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, Bob. (I'd never do anything on somebody else's page. Might try to talk to them, mention whatever the matter was, but I'd never go in and correct their spelling, etc. Maybe they did it that way on purpose; what do I know? Anyway, I have more than enough trouble to try to puzzle out on my own pages.) Catherine Cushing (talk) 02:45, 3 April 2019 (UTC)

Deletion of unused images

Hi, what is the etiquette when nominating an unused image for deletion? I want one gone especially because its gross. --Emot-siren.gif LABIA on the INTERNET Emot-siren.gif Dunell Hills Corpseman The Malton Globetrotters#24 - You rated this wiki '1'! Great job, go hog wild!|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| TMG 06:08, 5 April 2019 (UTC)

Just post a link to it on A/SD, as long as it's been truly unused for at least two weeks. (Same is true if it's a prior revision of an image in use.) Bob Moncrief EBDW! 11:10, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
You don't even technically need to go through A/SD for unused images that are more than 2 weeks old because they are scheduled deletions. In theory you could just let a sysop know on our talk page or discord and we can do it without red tape. DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION 17:49, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
That works too — I suggested A/SD because that way multiple sops are more likely to see it. If somebody DMs me individually, there's always a chance I won't notice for a day or two. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 17:51, 5 April 2019 (UTC)

Wrong category again

Hi, Bob. I suppose something like a full beer mug should have been placed in "Category: Pub Images", shouldn't it? Catherine Cushing (talk) 08:35, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

I think just "Category:Foods" is fine. But you're always welcome to edit and add more categories! Bob Moncrief EBDW! 10:24, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

Bob, I'm working on a draft page for the Mad Craskers Godson Arms pub. So I think what I'll do is sort that kind of thing (pub fare) into both categories and .

Wish I lived in England, then I could go about and take some pictures of my own. No pubs in Oregon, USA. Catherine Cushing (talk) 00:00, 10 April 2019 (UTC)

Sounds good! Btw, feel free to keep replying under the same header, even if another conversation is happening on this page. Each header is more like a thread, so keeping a topic under one header keeps things orderly. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 04:12, 10 April 2019 (UTC)

Discord

Either you or some other sysop banned me on the discord server. Please cite a rule I broke there that legitimates a ban. You can't, because I didn't break any. Your rules don't have any value, as you simply ban people because you don't like them. WHITE POWDER SKINHEAD (talk) 16:44, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

Hi there! Please familiarize yourself with the following from #resources-rules on the server:
Bob Moncrief said:
2. Off-topic discussion, especially discussion that disrupts the use of the server for on-topic purposes, may lead to the following consequences:
  • "timeout", in which the server becomes read-only for that user
  • permaban
There is no specific scale of escalations. Users should assume that violations will lead to permaban every time; timeouts and temporary bans are at my discression.
    3. Familiarize yourself with the Discord TOS. If you violate it, you're out and your messages will be reported.
Posting recipes for illicit drug manufacturing is illegal in the jurisdiction of the owner of the server (me) and thereby violates Discord's TOS against illegal activity. In addition, what you posted is both off-topic and blatantly disruptive, and therefore violates the above. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 17:09, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
Also I can't believe I misspelled "discretion". I've corrected the error on the server, but I leave my shame here for posterity. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 17:11, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
I googled that recipe in under 1 minute, dumped it in google translate and posted it on discord. And there are numerous off topic messages on the discord that didn't result in bans which brings me back to my first point "your rules don't have any value, you simply ban people because you don't like them." WHITE POWDER SKINHEAD (talk) 17:29, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
Just because something's widely available doesn't mean it's legal. And different sites and platforms have different policies towards acceptable content.
Quite a few people have received warnings (by private message) or temporary timeouts for off-topic posting. I am a capricious discord dictator, yes, and decide upon my own whim when something deserves outright banning. If you have a problem with that, you should have left the server as soon as you joined it. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 18:45, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
Qu'on me donne six lignes écrites de la main du plus honnête homme, j'y trouverai de quoi le faire pendre. -- Spiderzed 18:56, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
You're talking to a fascist, man. A neo-nazi. The most notorious one out there. Did you really think I was going to have a problem with dictatorship..? Non-aryan guys are even dumber than they look.
Now that I've established the fact you aren't able to form a semi-comprehensive thought, I think it's useless to elaborate on the contradiction in your stream of thoughts by mentioning that you wouldn't have banned any other Discord member for posting said recipe or any few offline messages whatsoever. WHITE POWDER SKINHEAD (talk) 02:08, 10 April 2019 (UTC)
"The most notorious one out there"? I think I know what that means.
I take "non-Aryan" as a compliment, since I often get confused for one irl. The Vikings and English, those esteemed Germanic-language peoples, both did horrible things to my ancestors for centuries — I can tell you all about it sometime if you ask.
And for posterity: I'd have banned anybody for posting the aforementioned recipe. I'm capricious, but consistently capricious. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 04:06, 10 April 2019 (UTC)

Though I love to see a good old-fashioned attempt at wikilawyering as much as the next person, those wiki-based rules simply don't apply to the discord. Simple as that. DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION 23:02, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

Hi Auri! The normal requirements to apply for a sysop are listed at the promotions page. One of the listed requirements is having been an editor on the wiki for six months or so; while not a hard and fast requirement, this is generally the amount of time it takes to learn the ropes of the wiki as well as see the admin pages in action. If you have any questions about wiki culture or procedure, let me know! Bob Moncrief EBDW! 02:19, 1 February 2020 (UTC)
Sure thing! Plus, if I do well, you have the majority of making me an admin anyway, seems that I presume you are a bureaucrat. But, for now, I am here to ensure that this wiki is what it should be, a user-made encyclopedia, and not a playground for vandals. With me here as the most awesome editor, this wiki will be reaching a much higher standard. --Auri (Express yourself, be heard!) 02:25, 1 February 2020 (UTC)

Sure thing! Yes, you can always edit your own messages; and on your own talk page, you can freely remove others's messages (but not edit them). Bob Moncrief EBDW! 02:57, 1 February 2020 (UTC)
Bob, I now know which articles I can edit. The ones without the forward slash. Thanks to Stelar! --Auri (Express yourself, be heard!) 03:01, 1 February 2020 (UTC)
Some pages without a forward slash still are best not to edit, e.g. group pages that you don't own. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 03:03, 1 February 2020 (UTC)
Yeah, it would say Group:. --Auri (Express yourself, be heard!) 03:05, 1 February 2020 (UTC)
No, groups don't have a specific prefix. e.g. Malton Taoist Temple is a group but has no prefix. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 03:07, 1 February 2020 (UTC)
Wow, this is harder than I thought! Okay, if I accidentially edit a page you think it is a group, just revert it. If the pages that I edit are not in the group section, then good, leave it be. I don't do this on purpose, you know. I just want to fix grammatical errors. --Auri (Express yourself, be heard!) 03:09, 1 February 2020 (UTC)
Normally you can tell what kind of page something is from the content of the page, or sometimes from the categories listed at the bottom, if that helps. Repeatedly editing group pages that aren't yours can get you in trouble even if it's unintentional, because it would indicate you can't tell what kind of page is a group page. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 03:11, 1 February 2020 (UTC)
Okay, so it will say either, group, user, etc in the categories? --Auri (Express yourself, be heard!) 03:15, 1 February 2020 (UTC)
User pages are always "User:", group pages have the name of the group in the mainspace. So the ones you had edited (the Bob reversed) had the group name before the slash. stelar Talk|MCM|EBD|Scourge 03:17, 1 February 2020 (UTC)

I suppose I should probably say something since I've been changing TONS of your edits. I've been updating year+ old stuff to "unknown", with the intention of shortening that down to 10>8>6 months if I ever get caught up. Still not sure I've caught all the 2018 stuff yet tho (is there a way to search that?) EthrDemon (talk) 22:02, 1 February 2020 (UTC)

Unfortunately there's no way to manually search it. Back when the MDU was active I would check every status and mark it unknown on a five-month cycle, but that meant manually opening every building page in the city — a time-consuming process, as I'm sure you've found out. There used to be a bot run by The Rooster that marked statuses unknown automatically, but he hasn't been active since 2011 (it may be possible to code a new one, but I am not tech-savvy enough). Even a basic template could work, something that allows you to go to say, add to all updates you make in 2020, and then in the future someone can go through all status updates that link to that. Have one for every year etc. DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION 22:28, 4 February 2020 (UTC)
