20070819 Use knives to carve graffiti

Suggestion type
Improvement. Suggestion scope
Survivors. Suggestion description
ok, Iv'e been working on this for a bit on discussion, so thanks to everyone who provided the help and constructive crticicism needed to get this off the ground The core of this suggestion is to provide a more permanent method of signposting areas with graffiti. The cost to carve 30 Characters into a wall with a knife is higher, at 1AP to write, 1AP to erase message, returning the wall to it's blank state and 1AP to write a new message. Each of these actions uses up a knife from your Inventory. Tagging is reqired to carve messages

  • What happens to the existing graffiti?

The existing graffiti (painted with the spraycan) Remains. Carved graffiti Appears seperately.

  • Why is a knife used up by using it to carve?

Because the blade would either be blunted beyond repair, or the knife itself snapped

  • Can anything else be used to carve graffiti?

No, not even wirecutters.

  • Does this require an extra skill?

No. The tagging skill is reqired to carve though.

  • What about the XP bonuses for tagging?

They remain the same as they are now. Carving gives you the same bonuses as graffiti.

  • What about Billboards?

Costs 10AP to carve a message onto them, same as spraypainting.

Ok, I think that covers the mechanics. Basicly I am suggesting this to give Tagging more of a point (wheras you don't need it to spray messages, you will need it to carve them) and to provide a more permenant graffiti that would reqire more effort to write and erase.

Keep Votes

  1. Author keep. - --Seventythree 10:43, 19 August 2007 (BST)
  2. Keep - Sounds interesting.--  Savant  Chit-Chat  10:55, 19 August 2007 (BST)
  3. Keep - This'd be good for more "important" messages like Revive and Entrance Point notifiers. It'd give them some protection from being erased, as it'd take 3AP and the time spent searching up a knife to do so. -- Pavluk 12:53, 19 August 2007 (BST)
  4. Keep - I like this, but maybe after x number of times the wall becomes too damaged to carve, and a tool box can be used to repair it? just a thought.LemonHead7t7 *̡͌l̡*̡̡ ̴̡ı̴̴̡ ̡̡|͡|̲̲̲͡͡͡ ̲▫̲͡ ̲̲̲͡͡π̲̲͡͡ ̲̲͡▫̲̲͡͡ ̲|]]| ̡̡̡ ̡ ̡ ̴̡ı̴̴̡ ̡*̡͌l̡* Talk/PDA/Red Rum/MOB 13:51, 19 August 2007 (BST)
  5. Keep - As Pavluk. I'm so tired of people spraying over entry point messages to spam their name or 'a zombie crapping on a human face forever'. It's more common than you'd think. But yes, as long as it is erasable and just hard to do so, I like it. --Howard Bentley 15:21, 19 August 2007 (BST)
  6. PwNaGe - I want better graffiti! BoboTalkClown 15:37, 19 August 2007 (BST)
  7. Change Drop the part about billboards. --Secruss 18:27, 19 August 2007 (BST)
  8. Keep/Change - As above: Carving a message into a billboard that is as visible as a spraypainted one would take days. The carved messages should cost the normal amount (1 ap), but appear on some other surface in the same block, not the billboard (maybe on the supports of the billboard, or a nearby wall). --Steakfish 22:39, 19 August 2007 (BST)
  9. Keep - Tee-hee. Hey 73 I pooped my pants!--  AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 04:05, 20 August 2007 (BST)
  10. Keep - I liked this idea on the discussion page, but I do wish the toolbox could somehow be implemented. Liam Degen 16:49, 20 August 2007 (BST)
  11. Keep - I like the idea of being able to post more graffiti in a single place. --Pdeq 23:32, 20 August 2007 (BST)
  12. Keep - A more reliable, but costly graffiti. --Obsidian 02:25, 21 August 2007 (BST)
  13. Why not. Glenstone 09:55, 21 August 2007 (BST)
  14. Keep - I believe this is a need. It is highly important, especialy for revive signs and adds more character to the game - --Happy 22:53, 30 August 2007 (BST)
  15. keep - Eventually the wall should be unusable, untill it is repaired. =doc crook 12:50, 31 August 2007 (BST)

Kill Votes

  1. Kill - not really needed --~~~~T''' 11:17, 19 August 2007 (BST)
  2. Kill - I don't really think that "I FCKED UR MUM L0LZ N00b" needs to be any harder to get off the wall.--Cap'n Silly T/W/P/CAussieflag.JPG 12:55, 19 August 2007 (BST)
  3. Kill - Only if it totally replaces the current tagging system. Seems to me that all forms of survivor communication need to be more costly so that it's only used for important messages. As it is, in-game survivor communication is little more than a waste of AP, and time (in reading the dross) The preceding signed comment was added by boxy (talkcontribs) at 13:08 19 August 2007 (BST)
  4. With the exception of the fort Infirmary, knifes seem rather hard to find. I'd rather not waste them on text. It would make more sense to have the knife be re-usable, but to make creating the message consume a lot more AP, as carving is slow work. And anyhow, painting over carved letters makes them pretty hard to read in most cases. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 20:59, 19 August 2007 (BST)
  5. Kill- What the silly capt said Sockem 23:16, 19 August 2007 (BST)
  6. Kill - I'd only vote keep if the cost to carve was something like 5AP. Make it painful, worth it. --Ducis DuxSlothTalk 01:15, 20 August 2007 (BST)
  7. First of all, knives already have TWO uses. They are the "newbie" weapon AND, when maxed, the barricade killer weapon. Secondly, this nerfs spraycans. Why bother with a spray can when you can use a knife? Use the knife as a weapon as need be, then graffiti when your ready (spray cans only have the second use). Thirdly, if you want semi-permanent, that's what the 10 AP cost of the billboards is for. And, lastly, the way this is described, the AP cost is too cheap. Spraypaint doesn't take a lot of work to do, carving does.--Pesatyel 04:18, 20 August 2007 (BST)
  8. Kill I agree that carving messages into a brick wall doesn't make much sense, and is redundant with spray cans. It might however be nice flavor if you could carve messages onto trees at parks. I suggest revising it to apply to parks only. --Jon Pyre 22:47, 20 August 2007 (BST)
  9. Kill I agree with Jon Pyre, this just seems to be a bit of a waste, you waste a knife, and it can be rubbed off for 1 AP, but if it could be used on things that spray cans can't be used on, it might have a point, but it would be such a bad way of doing this, because spray cans can be used multiple times, and compared to spray cans, they aren't the easiest thing to get. --Dane of the wolf 3:12, 21 August 2007
  10. Kill - As Jon Pyre. --Sonofagun18 05:29, 21 August 2007 (BST)

Spam/Dupe Votes

  1. no - If you carve a message into a wall with a knife, how can you erase it? =Doc Crook 18:18, 19 August 2007 (BST)
  2. Spam - I understand the game is imaginary but some things are too big of a leap, such as easily erasable carvings.--Karekmaps?! 23:38, 24 August 2007 (BST)
  3. RE Alot of things in this game are unrealistic, Who cares? --Kaynex 03:27, 31 August 2007 (BST)
