20071008 Add Compass Directions to Map
Vkkhamul 03:39, 8 October 2007 (BST)
Suggestion type
An addition to the interface which makes it simple to navigate.
Suggestion scope
All players.
Suggestion description
This will add the Cardinal (N,S,E,W) and Intermediate (NW, SW, NE, SE) directions to the game map. It would be in the form of a map compass rose below the map, or arrows around the borders of the map. These will be clickable controls that move the player one block in the chosen direction.
Why, you ask? Well, I figured out this suggestion after one of my friends registered for Urban Dead as a zombie. I advised her to follow the Feeding Groans, but she had no clue how to come about it. This suggestion would help clarify to Newbies that North is up and South is down.
Also, to the preference of others, this may prove a more comfortable means of navigation.

- Keep - Although I find it hard to believe anyone would not realise up is north and down is south on a grid-based game, Why not?--Wooty 04:12, 8 October 2007 (BST)
- Keep - Not number 1 on the "Things that Need to Exist" list, but it would be easy and at least marginally helpfull. --Steakfish 04:37, 8 October 2007 (BST)
- Keep - The benefit of this suggestion is not to inform people of the obvious -- that up is north -- but to assist in navigating the map. You can click on a directional arrow rather than the little tile to which you're moving. Makes sense.... it's how most games of this sort work in my experience... Far from necessaey or a high priority mod, but still a decent idea. --WanYao 05:00, 8 October 2007 (BST)
- Keep - I like it.--SeventythreeTalk 07:53, 8 October 2007 (BST)
- Keep – I don't want to think of the number of times I have confused NE/NW while hurriedly giving directions. >< ᚱᛁᚹᛖᚾᚨᚾᛏ 08:07, 8 October 2007 (BST)

- Weak Keep - Doesn't seem particularly useful, but still a nice idea.Studoku 08:51, 8 October 2007 (BST)

- Yeah, man, it really bums me out when they're all "God, go live in a hole and never come out." Real depressing if you don't know how to take flame. --LumiReaver 17:09, 8 October 2007 (BST)Non Author RE.--Karekmaps?! 03:47, 9 October 2007 (BST)
- Keep - Logical addition.--Actingupagain 17:08, 8 October 2007 (BST)
- Sheesh, it really isn't THAT difficult to figure it out. Up is north. But beyond that, I don't see this as anything determental to the game. Basically it ISN'T that big a deal.--Pesatyel 18:19, 8 October 2007 (BST)
- Keep/Change Make it toggleable, as mentioned below. On a side note, people are extremely rude. If I weren't so lazy, I'd make a point to pk all y'all assholes. You can vote "kill" without flaming. --MrCoolantSpray 18:43, 8 October 2007 (BST)
- Keep Harmless. Sure, nearly all maps on the planet have north as up so it'd be clear in the minds of most that it carries over, but the fact you can click them to move is ok. Just make sure it's a toggle. --Howard Bentley 19:33, 8 October 2007 (BST)
- Keep All the people voting kill are jerks who get off on ruining lives. Not everyone has your freaking infaillable sense of direction. Rebel147 21:45, 8 October 2007 (BST)
- Keep Sheesh, it really isn't THAT difficult to figure it out. Up is north. But beyond that, I don't see this as anything determental to the game. Basically it ISN'T that big a deal. Don't flame suggestions, unless they make no sense and are xtreme trenchcoater. -- BoboTalkClown 22:25, 8 October 2007 (BST)
- Keep - Should be toggable, but then the suggestion would be sort of useless if everyone turned it off. Perhaps a note for new character creations, but thats it.-- AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 01:22, 9 October 2007 (BST)

- Kill If you can't figure things like this out on your own, you shouldn't be playing Urban Dead. Have you considered Dora the Explorer? Slicer 05:06, 8 October 2007 (BST)

- Kill - not the best idea, but there's no need to flame it. --Pavluk A! E! 11:17, 8 October 2007 (BST)
- Kill - I don't like it. But flaming this isn't a good idea.--Perne 13:45, 8 October 2007 (BST)
- Kill - Should be perfectly clear to everyone in the northern hemisphere (where it is considered that up, on a map, is north), and those in the southern hemisphere (where, on a map, up is considered to be south) should be able to figure it out. --Saluton 14:31, 8 October 2007 (BST)
- I'm pretty sure North is always "up", regardless of hemisphere.--Pavluk A! E! 15:14, 8 October 2007 (BST)Non Author RE.--Karekmaps?! 03:47, 9 October 2007 (BST)

- Kill - Are you serious? The only person I know that screws up these is my next door neighbors 4 year old kid. And thats because he has severe dyslexia. And yes, a little bit of flaming is quite needed.-- dǝǝɥs oʇ ɯɐds: sʎɐʍ1ɐ! 15:09, 8 October 2007 (BST)
- Change I wouldn't want the clutter on my screen. Maybe if it was optional? --Jon Pyre 17:12, 8 October 2007 (BST)
- Kill - Seems a bit unnecessary; however, optionality would change my vote. --T 17:40, 8 October 2007 (BST)
- Kill - No heat here, I just feel learning the map is part of beginning play in UrbanDead. Not everyone understands immediately which way is north in a city. Wouldn't mind seeing this come into play once a person finds a GPS device though...--Shazzelim 17:42, 8 October 2007 (BST)
- Kill - Clutters interface. --Pgunn 18:14, 8 October 2007 (BST)
- Kill - what now ? kevan will create a textless UI for those who dont know how to read ? --People's Commissar Hagnat [cloned] [mod] 19:17, 8 October 2007 (BST)
- What? -How many UD players grow up using maps that have something besides north as up? --AlexanderRM 23:03, 8 October 2007 (BST)
- Kill - Since when did the common survivor in Malton just happen to have a compass with them? Yes, I realize that can be taken several ways, but seriously, we don't need a compass. Besides, it's better if newbies learn for themselves how to get around, instead of being spoonfed everything.--Private Mark 05:35, 9 October 2007 (BST)
- Kill - Because those who can't figure out how to navigate a 3 x 3 grid deserve to sleep in the streets and die. --Stephen Colbert DFA 16:52, 11 October 2007 (BST)
- Kill - Worthless, annoying, and unneeded. I dislike this idea muy mucho. -J. A. 16:34, 14 October 2007 (BST)
- Kill - On all maps, North is up, South is down, West is left, and East is right. It's common sense. --Paris V-W 19:53, 14 October 2007 (BST)
- Kill - Honestly, has your friend ever even looked at a compass or a map? How can you not figure out that North is up? Unless your completely illiterate, which I assume you're not as you did make this suggestion, this is an utter waste of time. --Scurley7 02:05, 17 October 2007 (BST)
- Kill Please tell me people aren't this dumb. But, Paris, I feel compelled to add that not all maps have North as the top of the map. A significant portion of maps of Fredericton, New Brunswick (especially those of it's university campus) have South as the top of the map, due to the top of the hill the city is built on being the "higher" side. Most people think of that way as being naturally "up" so maps are orientated that way. --the one, the only, sushiknight (talk contribs HARD E.N.D.) 06:21, 18 October 2007 (BST)
- Kill - How about people just learn the cardinal directions, instead? I mean, they are very simple. North up, South down, East Right, West Left. --Shatterspike1 00:07, 19 October 2007 (BST)
- Kill And whitch way does your friend normally hold a Map? Which way is North when she does that? ~A`Blue`JellyTME*V*I*L*? 04:18, 19 October 2007 (BST)
