20070809 Accuracy Reform

JS Leone 19:57, 9 August 2007 (BST)

Suggestion type
Improvement

Suggestion scope
Any survivor or zombie who wishes to attack another survivor or zombie.

Suggestion description
Newcomers to this game really get the short end of the stick. I, along with probably a lot of other people, feel that the "accuracy" system is broken. As a regular experience, I will end up killing off 20 AP just to deal 6 damage to a zombie with a fire axe (if I'm lucky). That's 10 hours of real time. Maybe it's just my bad luck, but I've seen it happen with others, too. This makes gaining experience ridiculously difficult. I can understand difficulty to a degree, but when it takes 10 tries to punch a zombie or survivor, it's near impossible to move up.

The starting accuracy rate for a new character is 10% when punching or striking with a non-firearm, which means 1 out of every 10 tries will succeed. In terms of believability, this inability to strike is insane: pop culture zombies are barely evasive to attacks such as punching or swinging a fire axe, let alone evade an attack 10 times (unless the survivor is completely stupid). In other words, in the event of a zombie apocalypse, there is no way it would take 10 punches or weapon swings for even the most inexperienced of survivors to succeed in hand-to-hand combat with a zombie, and likewise for zombies vs. survivors.

A suggested solution to this problem would be to increase punching and hand-to-hand weapon hit rates (as well as clawing accuracy for zeds) to at least 30%. Earned bonuses still apply to characters who have boosted their hand-to-hand accuracies via skills.

Kill Votes

  1. Sorry Um, it makes a bit of sense, but, it's a waste of time. And read below votes... BoboTalkClown 21:07, 19 August 2007 (BST)
  2. no - I see your logic, but it is fine the way it is. If you want to get xp easy, just use a FAK, and heal your way to the better skills. It is so much easier than attacking. =Doc Crook 20:01, 9 August 2007 (BST)
  3. KILL! KILL! - Yes, it is very hard when you start out, but it hard so it lasts longer! If it was 30% to start out, it would be to easy, resulting in getting all the skills faster, and the game getting more boring, faster. KILL! --Evildemon989 Talk · Help · W! · P! · SU! · TJ! · Hai! 20:25, 9 August 2007 (BST)
  4. Kill - there is a difference between hitting, and hitting hard enough /on a spot needed to do lethal damage. Besides, the axe currently maxes out at 40%, and can't be boosted much (if any) without harming game balance. You don't make any mention of adjusting combat skills to prevent maxed out ax hit rates from going up to 50% or so. ΔΔ Swiers BigEYEwitnessLOGOgrey.png 21:11, 9 August 2007 (BST)
  5. Kill - I likeses the acc. rates how they are.-- dǝǝɥs ɯɐds: sʎɐʍ1ɐ! 21:15, 9 August 2007 (BST)
  6. Kill - It makes sense, but it would also shag the game up completely. Not a chance. --The Hierophant 21:25, 9 August 2007 (BST)
  7. Kill - Survivors have 100% hit actions that give xp, no point in using combat until you get the skills. Zombies start with Vigour Mortis, although it would be better if they started with a slightly higher hit percent they don't. That's no reason both sides should get a buff.--Karekmaps?! 21:25, 9 August 2007 (BST)
  8. Kill - It's worked for two years, it'll work now. --MSTK 03:05, 10 August 2007 (BST)
  9. Change - Make it zombie only since survivors don't need axes once they get shotguns and pistols. --Sonny Corleone RRF CoL DORIS CRF pr0n 05:22, 10 August 2007 (BST)
  10. Kill - The starting levels are meant to be hard The preceding signed comment was added by boxy (talkcontribs) at 06:18 10 August 2007 (BST)
  11. Kill - I bet YOU couldn't kill a zombie in 10 hits with a fireaxe. The low percentages don't mean you're whiffing every blow. If you've ever chopped wood before, you know that sometimes even immobile targets that aren't trying to eat your brain are hard to hit properly. Sometimes the axe slips, and you just graze it. Sometimes it can even slip so badly that you end up hitting with the flat part of the axe, rather than the blade. Also, most of a zombie is not vulnerable. You can only REALLY hurt a zombie by hitting the head. --Steakfish 07:18, 10 August 2007 (BST)
  12. Kill - as above --~~~~T''' 08:00, 10 August 2007 (BST)
  13. Kill - Sorry, but no.--Seventythree 15:05, 10 August 2007 (BST)
  14. Kill - First off, mechanically, it's unwise, secondly, from a purely flavour point of view I don't see the 10% chance to hit as actually 'I only hit the zed one out of ten times' but as 'I only hit the zed with enough force to actually cause damage one out of ten times'. The other nine times are glancing blows, pushes to evade bites, et cetera. Mechanically of course, as the music teacher in the joke once said: If it ain't baroque, don't fix it. the one, the only, sushiknight (talk contribs HARD E.N.D.) 17:21, 10 August 2007 (BST)
  15. Kill - As above. --Saluton 18:00, 10 August 2007 (BST)
  16. Kill - I think of the low hit chances not as of low chance to hit, but low chance to hit and do damage. Stabbing something that is dead in the chest probably won't do much to stop it. Most people aren't that good at fighting anyway and then you have to fight something that classically doesn't feel (much) pain (aside from it hurting to be dead and brains helping that :P) you have to fight with a completely different play style. --Dipcup 23:06, 10 August 2007 (BST)
  17. Kill - I've seen too many fights to agree with this one. People can and do swing at each other way more than ten times to absolutely no effect. Faced with the undead I think the average person would hurt himself worse than he would his opponent.--Jiangyingzi 01:42, 12 August 2007 (BST)
  18. Kill - Try being a zombie lowbie sometime. --Druuuuu 20:53, 12 August 2007 (BST)
  19. Kill - Sure it's a bitch but it takes time. Healing is actually the best way to gain xp, as a newbie. --Ducis DuxSlothTalk 01:41, 13 August 2007 (BST)
  20. Kill - Nah, the game would be tooooooooo easy--  Savant  Chit-Chat  09:14, 14 August 2007 (BST)
  21. Kill - I was going to vote "Change" (only slightly shuffle the starting odds, not as drastic)(because I am a newb and I do know how frustrating it is, especially for zombies, actually) until I was reminded that are many other surefire ways to gain XP as a newb survivor. Try them... --WanYao 11:41, 15 August 2007 (BST)
  22. Kill - im against helping noobs through suggestions because of the possibility of zerging but its interesting that (vigor mortis stand up 5ap) last i checked is being kept while every one including (vigor mortis stand up 5ap)'s autor is shooting this down it could balance out (vigor mortis stand up 5ap) at least for noobs or roving zerg armieszhodani 10:05 am (PST) 8/20/07
  23. Kill And spam Are you kidding? your gonna wake up tomorrow, to see that your EHB baracades have been taken down, and all the survivors are dead. --Kaynex 22:49, 24 August 2007 (BST)
  24. KILL!!! OK, so it takes 10 punshes. "Miss" is just the broad turm. Maybe you just wing'd the target, but caused no damage. Or maybe you had to move out of the way of the Zombie mindlessly flailing an arm at you. "Miss" basically means "You didn't hurt your Opponent". It doesn't necessarily mean you missed. And there is no real point in changing the response text other than to make people understand that point, or maybe add some flavor. --Driaquer 01:06, 27 August 2007 (BST)

Spam/Dupe Votes

  1. Spam - This would lead to maxed-out Axes having 60% to hit, and maxed-out Knives having 70%. Coupled with the fact that said weapons don't require searching for ammo, no-one would use firearms any more. And surely that would be unbelievable in a zombie apocalypse. Pavluk 21:37, 9 August 2007 (BST)
  2. [Dupe?] Well, whatever, it's already in the game! Stop using the crowbar.--Pesatyel 02:47, 10 August 2007 (BST)
  3. spam - for saying "that's 10 hours of real time". No, it's 20 mouse clicks. --Funt Solo Scotland flag.JPG 09:11, 10 August 2007 (BST)
